I was going to wait but I said feck it. With the 14 day cooling off period I switched from flogas to energia this morning. I'll soon find out if flogas try to hit me with the €50 charge.

Try being the most pertinent word in that sentence.

mmm, true, but then I have heard that fixed rates are a thing of the past etc but BWG somehow still seem to have them.

I see this from another thread:

    One of the BWG T&Cs

"This is a fixed energy contract meaning that the energy component of the unit rate and standing charge are fixed for the duration of the contract, but regulated pass-through charges may change. If we need to adjust these rates because of regulated charge changes, we will write to you 30 days in advance of the change".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 901 ✭✭✭Exiled Rebel

From my reading they are referring to PSO and VAT. If they were to change the supplier would inform you 30 days in advance of the change occuring.

I'll take my chances with energia. As things stand I don't have a battery, so i intend to export all my excess at 20c versus 18.5c with flogas. Based on the previous 12 months export figures that's an extra €73. That should counter a significant portion of any potential energia price increase over the 12 month term of the contract.

Have you decided to renew the BWG plan after all? I'm on the same boat and Energia works out a bit cheaper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 131 ✭✭Bannerman1969

I'm holding tough at the moment to see what BWG offer if anything over the next two weeks. With the good weather at the moment and a battery I'll not be buying very much anyway over next few weeks. I'd hope to stay with Flogas as I reckon other suppliers will be raising their rates soon.

So many variables for each person though with Ev's, large solar batteries, heat pumps ect. Do your homework and do what's best for you.

Just saw the BWG rural standing charge of €422 - ouch!

Extended until October 31st, and likely to continue to a later date, in the October Budget - circa 1st week in October.

    @Exiled RebelExport rate for Flogas 18.5c + vat = 20c

For Energia its 20c INCL vat

The 'new' BWG link was posted over in BA thread.

Also now appears open to new customers until 31st April for anyone who maybe interested.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Public transport user? If you're sick of phantom ghost services on the 'official' RTI sources, check bustimes.org for actual 'real' RTI, if it's on their map it actually exists.

    Fair enough.

I've just seen the flogas bwg offer. The €422 standing charge is eye watering...€121 more than the Energia SC I signed up for this morning.

Yes the non smart Rural standing charge rate is expensive, but I'm not prepared to sign up for smart tariffs at this point.

The main turn off point for me with Energia is their insistence on still charging extra for "excess use". If I buy more I want to pay less 😏

500units of excess a month for me helps towards the SC

Well ****, I just signed up to Energia earlier today

Anyone know how I can cancel the switch?

If you switched online that you would have a cooling off period and cancellation procedure should be described in your first email from Energia.

However for night meter Energia is cheaper than Flogas BWG unless you use a lot of energy. For example if you use more than 5000 night time units per billing cycle then excess pricing from Energia would eat up all savings from regular night time rate. Best idea would be to plug in your number as it really depends on your unique day/night mix.

for those with no battery, or a small one(5kw) Energia 20cent export rate, added to a lowish standing charge, may suit some users.

For those with larger batteries(10kw or more), the choice is Energia Smart Drive, 4 hour window @ 7.54 cent inc vat for 1st 1,000 units per 2 months, rising to 8.67 cent inc vat. thereafter, and 20cent for export.

or Pinergy, who pay 25 cent for export, but only a 3 hour window @ 5.45 cent, which maybe too restrictive for some when charging EV’s + battery+ appliances simultaneously during cheap night rate window.

Yeah I've emailed Energia to request a cancellation of the switch and signed up to Flogas via the portal

I ran the numbers and Flogas came in about the same price, the main convenience is avoiding the switching process. I want to ensure me wife is on the account as well and Flogas make that very easy, whereas I have to call Energia while she's beside me

    Silly question....

I have a non activated Smart meter (dont want to go smart currently) and I want the BWG d/n rate do I sign up to (1) smart dual 18 month fixed or (2) dual 18 month fixed.

I presume (1) will activate a smart plan so (2) is the one for me?

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,913 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

Option 2, basically you want to avoid the word smart as much as possible

Yeah. Thought as much - just making sure. Going to sign up tonight. Cheers

I think Flogas also pays ¢20 per kWh exported. It’s ¢18.5 plus VAT which works out just above ¢20. I don’t understand how VAT gets us money but that seems to be the case judging by their billing.

Now that the renewed BWG offer has finally been made public it looks like it trumps the Energia D/N plan with 38% discount. The standing charge is much lower as well.

Someone posted earlier that they were 'renewed' onto a Flogas plan that is not as competitive as this new BWG plan, so hopefully those users will be migrated painlessly over to the rates now being offered.

Fixed for 18 months looks handy as well as there are a lot of kites up at the moment preparing us for imminent energy rises.

I assume you are referring to the non-smart meter D/N plans?

The Flogas standing charges for smart plans are terrible.

I had a smart meter installed just over a month ago and on an old 24hr plan still. I wish Energypal had the new BWG offer as I cant decide between that and the Energia Smart Data plan.

What email address did you use to cancel Energia?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,500 ✭✭✭Ryath

You can add a custom plan on energy pal to add in BWG figures. Energia working out €150 cheaper for me than staying with BWG offer. Fixing for 18 months and Emerald park tickets nearly make it worthwhile though!

    Excellent - thanks.

    So I created a 2 custom plans

    • Top one is the Energia Axa Smart Plan (Custom Plan - Smart)
    • Bottom one is FloGas BWG (Custom Plan - D/N)
    image.png

I only have 4 weeks of data, but we have changed our energy usage in that period to reflect expected time of use consumption patterns. Whilst it is only a small data set, it is still enough to make an informed decision I think.

The Energia Axa plan is the cheapest in my case, but I am not eligible as an existing Energia customer. However the Smart Data 33% is only marginally more expensive (€22.21 extra).

The Flogas BWG plan is estimated to be €101.42 more expensive than Smart Data 33% - mostly accounted for the difference in rural standing charges (Energia - €300.91, Flogas - €422.23, a difference of €121.32).

TLDR - So for me as it stands at the moment, I either go with Energia Smart Data 33% (no cashback) with a variable rate and take my chances, or else lock in for an €100/year extra with a fixed rate for 18 months.

I would have thought if u took a year contract its exactly that, also 18 months ties you down particulary if prices drop , im thinking of getting an EV but wont know till prob next January and if i take an 18 month contract might not be the one

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,964 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Yep, non-smart, regular D/N plans. The updated BWG offer from Flogas looks like the pick of the bunch at the moment? The electricity standing charge is down from 336 to 257 as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 131 ✭✭Bannerman1969

You are sent a code via email for 2 x Emerald Pk tickets after the 14 day cooling off period has passed. Valid for 4 months from then.

On D/N plan standing charge is 331, if you click into details it shows exact prices. Assuming you are not super heavy user Energia has lower standing charge and unit rates.
