Category D write off

    Hi all,

As the title says; 2011 hyundai I20 rear ended the other week. No major damage but the boot catch broke which caused the batter to run down over the weekend with the car sitting up (it's a second car that I'd use for work).

Insurance for the party at fault have now deemed our car a cat D write off and have offered us 4000 eur minus salvage fees of 600. We can keep the car and 3,300.

My issue is that I was hoping to trade this car in come December and buy something newer. With it being cat D I'm told now that it'll be worth nothing to me. I could use the money from the insurance to repair the car but still l won't get much for it in December. Do I give the car to them, take the four grand and buy something small, right now or do I keep the car I have, take the 3,300 and use that for trade in come December? Car insurance is up for renewal in May so I'm hoping it won't cost too much to insure it (does anyone have advice on this?)

I'm outright telling the insurance company that I'm not happy and want more money for the car but they don't seem to be budging.

    Whats the best option?

I'd bite their hand off for the 4k to be honest and use it as a deposit for a new car.

I don't want a new car this side of Christmas. My original plan was to get one more year out of it and then buy a Rav come Dec/Jan so I'm either stuck with this car till then, I take the four grand and buy the equivalent for the rest of the year or keep what I have and take the 3300.

The cars they're sending me that they've used for comparison have far higher mileage.

I suppose I just feel annoyed now. A sore back and a load of hassle because someone was distracted driving (admitted at the scene)

I very much sympathasise. Mrs CML was in an accident which wrote off her little Renault which had many good years left in it if it was just left alone, by a stupid driver who crossed her path at a junction. You never really get properly compensated for cars that are a bit old as the value you will get is so low. And in fairness looking at Done deal you are getting as much as its worth.

I am, in fairness getting a fair price for it. Mine only has 79000 miles so, for a car of that year, it's doing very well.

It's very frustrating. Even if I take the 3300 I'm out of pocket insuring and trading in a Cat D write off and won't get what little more I would have gotten in December. Its incredibly annoying to be the aggrieved party and still to lose out.

I'm arguing as much as I can and I've flat out told them I won't accept the 3300 but I suspect the one losing out here will be me.

did you get a quote for the actual damage/repair ?

Depending on what that was, it may work out for you to take the €3,300 (and put it in the bank, don't spend it), repair it (even cheaply), and come December take what you get for the car in a cash sale (no garage will want a 15 yr old car as trade-in anyway) and you'll have whatever you get for it + €3,300.

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Yes, quote for repair came in at 2600. Leaves me with very little. I'm so annoyed that I'm out of pocket when I'm not the party at fault here.

You have been offered a fair price for your car, why not just take the settlement and get something else.

€2600 for the repair sounds like an insurance price, asking for a cash quote yourself from a local repair place to get it safely usable would probably be a lot less.

Personally, I'd take the €3300, keep the car and fix for a few €100 if possible or if not sell it on Donedeal/Adverts for whatever few €100 you can get, and buy a replacement car to keep you going until you want to trade it in.

€2500ish cash would get you this, there are cheaper but I picked this due to the long NCT.

That's leave you 'up' a few €100 plus whatever you sell/trade both cars for to put towards the new car.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

That repair sounds like a insurance quote alright. Cheaper option is to pick up secondhand parts in same colour. Maybe a new rear crash-bar though.
