Test on Block 10D active in addition to 7C.

Not a peep on 10D in Drogheda, may not be active up here yet.

Despite what people might say about it but DAB+ is the way to go, its the future. We at least have one form terrestrial broadcasting, that's it, Europe have embraced it. MW and LW wave is gone for sure and FM will be deceased in another 10 years or less. So let's give it go, I won't get it here in Kerry, never did. Its a bold and brave move, but I wish them the best.

Just bought a Dab radio for the garden on Amazon for 30 quid to test it out.

Looking forward to see how this rolls

I can get a blip on 10D if I go upstairs to the back bedroom of the house. But not enough to lock a signal. I'd presume that's coming from Dublin somewhere.

I'm in Dublin, but not getting a lock on that.

What will be the capacity of the new mux? How many simultaneous streams will be possible assuming they don’t try to cram too many on with a reduction in the quality that would be expected.

10D won't lock on in car in city centre Dublin but now 7C with Test A - Q102 Test B - Spin 103 and Test C - NOVA

I managed to get a lock on 10D by walking down to another part of the estate. It also has the “FailteDAB.ie 2” service name and either has the same stations, or nothing. I suspect it’s the same as what’s on 7C.

    Four Tests broadcasting.

"mac tire" (which is Irish for "native son") - Test tone

And as DublinsABC already said - Nova, Spin and Q102.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,496 ✭✭✭StreetLight

I'm wondering if Mac Tire should be Mac Tíre with the fada on the letter 'i'. This would make it "Wolf" as a follow-on from Sionnach (Fox).

7 services on the ensemble now, d, e and f were added this evening. Same three stations as a, b and c (Q102, Spin and Nova).

So am I correct in saying that the three broadcasting companies testing so far are Bay Broadcasting, Bauer and Onic (formerly Wireless)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,816 ✭✭✭Glaceon

Correct, one from each. But I’m surprised that it’s their main channel and not one of the online-only extras. I wonder if they’ll be on the final service?

They can broadcast to almost the entire planet on the internet so I see no reason why DAB would be any different

Here's a breakdown of the test channels:

    mac tire: Test tone (64k)
    Test a: Q102 (64k)
    Test b: Spin (48k)
    Test c: Nova (64k)
    Test d: Q102 (32k)
    Test e: Spin (64k)
    Test f: Nova (40k)

Yep, the 32k one sounds noticeably bad, even speech sounds a bit robotic. But the 64k ones sounds fine in fairness, it's DAB+ so a better codec. I'd hope that they don't go lower than 64k in service though.

Two DAB radios here, a Roberts SportsDAB 5 and Roberts Stream WM-202. The former is picking up the signals well upstairs, but whilst the latter is picking up the muxes, but not tuning the stations.

I wish our new DAB masters well. It's been a long time since the Psion Wavefinder!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,863 ✭✭✭Charles Slane

I have a Roberts WM-202 in the kitchen too, and unfortunately it doesn't do Dab+, hence it won't pick up any of the FaileDAB channels. It also doesn't do Shoutcast for online stations, which meant the loss of the BBC online stations a couple of years ago.

I wouldn't ever buy a Roberts radio again.

Does anyone know the official launch date for this service yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,816 ✭✭✭Glaceon

Getting a signal on 5B up here in Drogheda now. It's stronger than the one on 7C, so that's what my radio is preferring. I thought the whole point of DAB was that it was SFN? Would the radio switch between frequencies? So they're now on 5B, 7C and 10D.

Try to sell it online to a UK customer on some online platform. This has nothing to do with Roberts or not. Radios for DAB can't receive DAB+.

DAB is still in use in the UK, mostly for the BBC stations.

DAB+ is the more up to date version and DAB+ Radios can usually receive DAB.
