The president does have broad power to put tariffs on items or things coming in from foreign nations. However, congress can check that power if it then rejects a tariff through legislation.

We shouldn't be adapting our policies for an easily manipulated jellyfish like trump either.

Rational heads is what we need and the EU has already sent donald running scared multiple times on our behalf. European companies already build a lot of their cars in the states (my own was built in Alabama and "finished" in Germany), the car market in the states is very different to here (Japan might be more impacted? China won't care, domestic demand there keeps them sustained while the GOP attempt to castrate American consumption and drive them toneecession).

But then, you have been proclaiming this for years and always been wrong, so why would you be right this time? We'll see indeed.

I don't support trump but they are putting extra resources into stopping immigration ,trump threatened mexico with tariffs and mexico sent 1000s of troops to the border to stop illegal migrants. I am saying the democrats have to address issues that effect the working class and Latino voters if they want to get elected .One thing trump has from his experience on tv is he able to speak in simple language and get his message across .

Of course he is destroying the federal government and giving more tax breaks to the rich . He says he won't cut medicaid or social security but doge is closing down offices and sacking staff so if an old person or disabled person wants to apply for a pension or social security payments that,ll have to travel a long distance to find an office and wait for hours in a long queue .imagine if there's a 1000 people phoning an office and there's only 5 people there to answer the phones .

The IRS is expecting to lose 10 per cent of tax revenue this year due to staff cuts and interfere nice by doge .

It makes no sense to sack irs staff who collect billions from large corporations .There's no money to be saved at the IRS.

Trump is making so many executive orders it's hard for the democrats to react and he's no attacking judges who are trying to stop doge from doing illegal acts like accessing private tax data on citizens . Students are being arrested because the protested against the war in Gaza . universities are clamping down in protests because the fear losing federal funding .

The whole tradition of protest and free speech is in danger of being abandoned as company's and schools fear they will be punished by the government .

“We are going to be doing tariffs on pharmaceuticals in order to bring our pharmaceutical industry back,” Mr Trump said in the White House on Wednesday.

“We don’t make anything here in terms of drugs, medical drugs, medicines. It’s in other countries – largely made in China, a lot of it made in Ireland. Ireland was very smart. We love Ireland. But we are going to have that,”

    Oh fun.

Are we in for a rough ride with American pharma holding off or at least lessen any investments in Ireland for the foreseeable future? It's not simple nor an overnight thing to suddenly have manufacturing capability be built, supply chains stabilized, and then be competitive.

I'd be curious to know how the EU is going to respond to this. First on the vehicle manufacturing and then the very likely pharmaceutical tariffs imposed onto Ireland.

We're overexposed in this industry right?

If such a meagre method could get results like this just imagine what the Russians or the Chinese have on these guys.

It must be like f*cking Christmas every day at the moment to be a Russian or Chinese foreign agent.

P.S. MTG losing it is glorious. Her talking sex traffickers and rapists, while still lauding Trump is sickening. I don't believe she gives a toss about any victim of rape.

I believe this is what is actually going on, Trump is a useful idiot. Vance is their man and if they succeed we just had the last election for some time.

A judge reinstated 1000 people sacked by doge these including firefighters and emergency response workers who work in parks .Right now America is facing increasing danger from fires that are stronger and cause billions of dollars in damage every year . I don't think doge is saving money I think it's aim is to simply reduce public services to the minimum . This effects even rich people .The quality of life in America is falling .The stock market is falling .

Crypto coins are doing well good news for scammers and hackers .

Before doge people always assume that they could retire at 65 and the social security system was protected by all politicans of both party's

Its ironic the average maga voters are the ones most effected by doge and government cuts .

trump is using fraud and dei to cut 1000s of federal workers although they do vital work to maintain infrastructure and protect the consumer from fraud

The Democrats are awful at talking to voters and getting the message across to working class people talk about sanctuary citys and LGBT trans rights does not appeal to the average voter . Wheres the next Clinton or the next obama.?

Trump use as the language of ordinary people and is very clever at using tv media to connect with people

If every US bought car is made in US, it’s going to increase price, even if it brings more jobs back. Those jobs will be gone if people can’t afford expensive American made cars. Who will work in the factories? Where will they get the aluminium, steel and nickel?

All the vehicles will be about 10 inches long, will be made of plastic, and can even be assembled by a 10 year old. If Canada stops nickel exports, you won't have engines, transmissions - anything that needs hardened steel. Trump thinks building electric power plants is just as easy. No aluminum means no more F150 Ford trucks - the second best selling vehicle currently in the US.

The American Apparel story is really probably the best example of how Trumps plan would work in practice.

Was an ultra popular brand back in the day. Made fairly plain basoc clothing. Pitched themselves as selling clothing that's entirely made in America, no cheap Asian labour making your t-shirts, etc...

The price was a bit higher, but it was made in the good old US of A.

The problem was, it was am unsustainable model for the type of product they made, and the company went bust.

A Canadian company (pretty sure it was Canadian) came in and bought the company. They were going to move manufacturing to a low cost centre, because the business couldn't be kept going with American only manufacturing.

Was a bit of uproar from the die-hard brand fans.

So, they came up with a compromise. They would offer 2 products on the market.

    • More expensive American made clothing
    • A cheaper identical equivalent made in a lower cost country.

The net result, pretty much all of their sales shifted to the lower priced products (because which student is ultimately going to spend $15 on a grey t-shirt when you can buy the same one for $10 on the same site).

Moral of the story ultimately is, even with tariffs, American manufacturing is more expensive than a low wage country and the consumer either will have to foot the bill for more expensive foreign produce, due to the tariffs, even more expensive American produce, because it'll still cost more to make in America than a tariffed foreign product. Either way the American consumer loses.

If you can crash the economy, then unemployment goes up and you can pay those American workers less.

The US was at full employment under Biden, trump seems to want to reverse that.

"American manufacturing is more expensive than a low wage country"

Which is why CFTrump wants more American children born, and wages to drop. His handlers know this is a crude way to compete. The assault on women's reproductive rights is just part of the program. Pretty sure Project 2025 is all over this (free IVF, system-wide removal of abortion access, etc.)

The law of supply and demand never fails. More available workers, lower demand, lower wages.

The kleptocrats in charge know that stealing the wealth of even a crashed US economy would allow them to amass the greatest personal fortunes the world has ever seen.

They win if Trump can somehow hold it together for the full term and beyond, they also win if the Democrats somehow overthrow gain back control in 2 years because they are pretty certain that the democrats will allow them to keep that stolen wealth

They win if there is massive civil unrest and Trump uses it as pretext to successfully install himself as chancellor

They only lose if there is a massive political uprising and the forces of democracy win

    Chomsky(2017) on the Republican party

"Has there ever been an organisation in human history that is dedicated, with such commitment, to the destruction of organised human life on Earth?"

are the Secretaries of State not there at the behest of the President. ?If he is gone and the ‘head is cure off’ are they all IMMEDIATELY ‘let go’?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 15,302 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

Nothing in the Constitution originally mentioned any positions other than POTUS and VPOTUS.

As for who is let go, nothing specified there, they all serve at the behest of the POTUS.

I cannot get my head around all ‘ this ripping off’ by the states that the US was trading with ! Did the US not see what was going on and why. It was up to the US to make it attractive enough for the pharmaceutical , etc, industries to stay in the US . After all the US is free of EU regulations - it is totally independant as to what it wants to do re business, trading, etc.

Yes, we are massively overexposed to it. It may indeed give some pause for thought before any potential investment (I have no idea if any was on the horizon anyway), but the lead-time for any new manufacturing would most likely take it past the lifetime of this administration. I'd expect, as we have seen in some other industries, announcements of new investments in the US but whether they are followed through on is a different question.

In the short term, medicines aren't exactly fungible products. This is just going to hurt Americans.

The democrats have become to divided and too many factions to give a united voice.

MAGA is simple, one message and any republican who doesn't like it is called a RINO and is attacked by everybody until they shut up or face being politically and sometimes personally annihilated.

There's a cult leader who can insult, belittle and blatantly lie about any republican politician or a member of their family and he doesn't get any push back.

There is no single democratic politician that has that much power within the party.

Republicans all want the same thing, to become as personally wealthy as possible, pay as little tax as possible and not be interfered with by anybody else.

MAGA followers think they will get this same privilege in their life not realising that the are the fodder to make the republican politicians rich.

MTG does not give a fxxk about her constituency. Susan Collins hasn't ran a town hall in 20 years. Yet they still get voted to keep their positions.

You are cherry picking. Will you please look at the other things that Biden did that were a bit more positive.. would it not be the case that whatever Biden did , they were done in a ‘more ordered’ , diplomatic way and no mention of Panama, Canada, Greenland , 🇬🇱 allies relationships remained VERY INTACT and the US. Under Biden - as was the whole of America And Russia was VERY CLEARLY in the opposite camp
