First Class

Hi, I am looking at first class for a direct Dublin-Killarney train. When I got into seat selection it is the regular 2-2 seating, not 1-2. There is nothing on the Irish Rail website to explain what this service offers over standard (the first class section on the website refers to Dublin/Cork and Dublin/Belfast only). I was hoping for extra leg and/or shoulder room but it looks the same. Has anyone taken this service?

It is exactly the same seat as the other ones on that train. Don’t waste your money on it.

The only true First Class is on the MkIV Cork train and DD on the Belfast lines. These have the 2 plus 1 seating you are talking about.

So you get nothing extra for the extra price? Seems odd.

On the 22000 (intercity railcars) I think they have smaller tables so it seems like you have more legroom. And a nice table lamp by the window. So no, not really much difference.

The only time I would pay for first class on a 22k is if I were on a standing-room only train long distance having not booked a seat, I might just take an unreserved 1st class seat and pay the step up fare when the checker comes around. Not sure if you still do that. Or if I were booking a seat but all the standard class seats were booked and I couldn't choose a different train. IMHO there is literally zero point otherwise.

Also, you need to beware that some Dublin-Cork services and random Dublin-Belfast services are ICR operated, though for the latter it is hard to tell in advance.

It's very easy to tell the difference on both the Cork and Belfast routes - services operated by ICRs have a lower first class supplement.

More people these days opt for first to avoid on the board "characters" in standard.
