    Swapped back in the saddle I swapped out two days ago.

    At least it gave me the opportunity to properly clean and regreased the saddle clamp, a job I declined to do when taking this saddle off in the first place.

    Rear wheel needed truing, nothing too bad, block just touching on one side, twiddled with a spoke key then gave up. Contacted Joe Daly’s yesterday to book it in. Brought up late this morning, ready about three o’clock this afternoon. Fantastic service! ‘man Dave!

    Switched out the 42cm bars for carbon 38cm. Was able to reuse the bar tape also.

    I have 38cm on mine, not a small guy, just find it more comfortable. I am looking at narrower, potentially 36cm. I just feel like I am MTBing when I jump on a bike with 44cm. I suppose it is technically an aero gain but I would say it is marginal for someone like me. Old school measurements, I should be on 44cm but I just don't feel comfortable.

    I also prefer it for racing, feels safer squeezing through gaps, just an opinion though, the bars are shielded by my body mass and arms.

    Decided to show the commuter a bit of love a, 12 year old btwin triban 500. New chain, hopefully caught the cassette in time, but have a spare cassette anyway. New 25mm back gatorskin and brake pads all round. stripped and cleaned the rear derailleur jockey wheels while i was at it. Wimped out last week commuting in the ice, so first commute of 2025 tomorrow

    Checking the size of the lower headset bearing so my mechanic could order one for me. It seems like it's a more pressing issue than I first thought 😄

    Installed latex tubes. Ride quality is better and I got a few PRs on segments I've done dozens of times, and got 9th overall on one segment.

    Was in a hurry to install the new headset bearings in the bike, so naturally I spent 25 minutes trying to figure out what was wrong, after not taking the time initially to notice I was putting the top bearing in upsidedown 😭

    Never trust the work that went before you, especially if it's your own...

    Combined a lunchtime spin with picking up new brake blocks for the classroom bike and grabbing a coffee (and nearly getting run over, but that's for a different thread)

    New block installed on the Cadex, we'll see if they need fettling on the next spin.

    Swapped out the 105 50-34 for a GRX 46-30. Even got the 105 FD working fine with the setup, only had yo adjust the high screw.

    One minor issue im having now is when the bike is 40 and small chain ring, the chain jumps off the lower jockey wheel. Dunno if its from not removing additional links to accommodate the change or if the jockey wheel is worn out. Wasn't occurring before anyway

    i'd have assumed that chain length issues would happen at the extremes of gearing - big to big or little to little, but not necessarily little to big?

    if it was chain length related, that issue should be happening at other gear combos too.

    I have an older ultrega chain which was a link or two shorter. Threw it on and it seems to have resolved the issue. Didn't count the links for either chain, but I remember the ultrega one being sized for a 50-34 11-34, so maybe 113/114 links.

    As @magicbastarder said, if I tried jumping from lowest gear to the big ring on the ultrega chain the whole groupset would freeze up(with the 50-34). The newer chain only had one link or none removed.
