I'm not a mod, am I? So no I don't think I will. It's enough for me if posters who do go off-topic can avoid getting on their high horses to posters who are on-topic. 😁

And FWIW the moderator has said to stay on topic, so do you have anything to say about what Garron Noone actually said, or why it caused so much fury that he had to close his account?

Because it's still a puzzle to me.

Garron is a champion of the people

Eh? He’s a man who does amusing videos on TikTok.

A certain group of people with a certain viewpoint have decided he’s their champion but that’s not the same

I'd feel very sorry for the guy. He does seem wholly genuine and nice.

I was cynical about what would happen happen regarding his "celeb" peers openly backing him. Fair play to them there has been colossal support from all the influencer types and they've all shown a bit of credibility by backing him.

This won't open up any dialogue about immigration either way. We'll do as we are told but thankfully I think this also won't railroad Garron's harmless career.

I've posted plenty of posts about Garron, you're welcome to read them all on thread.

I’d love anyone here claiming garron is attention seeking or being a big crybaby to ask themselves genuinely how much crap they’d listen to before enough was enough?

I’ve been on the receiving end of online abuse and commentary and it’s not something you will triumph against. You’ll never win. The people at this crap are relentless. They’ll never give up. Your only hope is to go to ground and wait for them to forget about you or get outraged by something else.

there seems to be a large cohort of people who deem it acceptable to behave uncivilised online but as has been said they wouldn’t dream of doing so in real life. Not one of the commenters would say that shite to his face.

Guys not attention seeking at all- he’s doing the exact opposite. He’s fecked off entirely for a while. He did the right thing.

I have no idea who they are, I've never seen it on someone's social media and I wasn't aware there's a brigade of them.

So he's not allowed express an opinion ?

    Nonsense

The people who have hounded him have shown us the evil oppressive bullies that they are

Garron's music page on Tik Tok reposted a video of his actual view on immigration. Which is that Ireland has benefitted massively from immigration, that our country is built on people wanting to come here and they deserve to feel welcome and safe. This, he says, is our ultimate value.

Looks like the far right have lost their poster boy.

I would have little to no time for either the far left or far right keyboard warriors on social media, but it would definitely be the case that the far right ones would be much more likely to fall foul of anti-discrimination laws, equality legislation, hate speech laws and so on.

In that sense, they are not exact opposites, even if they can both be quite extreme in their views.

In the case of Noone, I'm not sure it would be fair to say he was the victim of a massive social media pile on. Many of his critics were saying they were disappointed in him or that he shouldn't have said what he said etc, but very, very few were calling him a 'racist' or a 'bigot' or an actual member of the far right.

GN has spoken many times about his previous issues with anxiety and agoraphobia. Taking some time away from toxic, hand wringing and most importantly largely anonymous w@nkers who don't have the brain capacity to have more than one thought at a time is the right thing to do.

Haven't seen anyone say he is not entitled to his own opinion

You might want to read the thread yourself.

It wasnt me that first mentioned Mcgregor if thats what you are suggesting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,373 ✭✭✭✭suvigirl

Didn't suggest it was. Merely pointed out that I was replying to your post about McGregor.

If Garron believes that our country is built on immigration, he’s sadly misguided, as are some posters here. There has only been net positive migration to the country for less than two decades throughout our entire history. This country was almost exclusively built by the people who have always lived here. The Irish people.

Kind of goes to show that people shouldn’t be forming their opinions on immigration based on the musings of a rather ill-informed chap on social media. Having said that, he doesn’t deserve the pile-on from an equally ignorant cohort of extremists on the other side of the debate. I just can’t understand why people can’t be adult about this topic and simply look at the data.

Nope. At no stage did I ever say he isn't entitled to his opinions. In fact I said he is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11 Hibern0

"sticks to the comedy and singing in future " is exactly what you said

Further up the post you say it was not a good idea for him to discuss controversial topics

You are absolutely saying you only approve of him speaking on music and comedy

Two posts and I could 99% say you are an open borders, limitless immigration defender who uses the exact tactics that were used against Garron

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,373 ✭✭✭✭suvigirl

I hope he sticks to the comedy and singing.

It clearly wasn't a good idea, I'm sure most would agree, considering the shitshow now.

He is entitled to his opinions as anyone else. Stop making up stuff to attribute to posters.

It clearly wasn't a good idea, I'm sure most would agree, considering the shitshow now.

    That's just victim-blaming though.

Not like we haven't seen this happen before: he's crumpled under the attacks, that's all.

    Well done to the bullies.

ETA: Ireland has been built on immigration?? 😁 FFS. Looks like poor Garron has had his suicide, sorry I mean apology, note dictated to him by Americans who think their country is the whole world.

Or, as he says, this has always been his opinion and still is.

He's no good to you now, so time to attack his character. The hypocrisy 🙄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,638 ✭✭✭volchitsa

I'm sure you can show where I've attacked his character? I said he's a victim of bullies. That's not a character flaw.

BTW: how was Ireland "built on people wanting to come here"? When I was at university, more people left the country every year than arrived - and most of those who arrived were Irish people beginning to come home. Was nobody "building" the country until the 21st century? Really?

He's obviously saying what he's been told to say, to appease the extremists - because whatever anyone thinks about immigration, that's absolute nonsense that nobody can possibly believe. I'd suspect it's quite possibly the equivalent of a coded cry for help from Garron.

Yes I'm glad they have his back

I'm disappointed that PK/TLLS said nothing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,279 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Was he 'attacked' though? He certainly took a lot of criticism over his comments, saying he was 'naïve' and so on, but very few people resorted to personalised insults or name calling. About the strongest criticism of him I saw was that he should have anticipated (as a social media influencer) a lot of pushback against his remarks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,373 ✭✭✭✭suvigirl

    Victim blaming?

He shut down his accounts. I don't know why.

Perhaps he didn't want right wing elements latching into his video.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11 Hibern0

Being called a racist when it wasn't even mentioned I would regard as an attack. Insulting is not debate or an attempt to, it is a slur and designed to hurt his stance and force others views upon him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,638 ✭✭✭volchitsa

    What remarks exactly?

What I saw was a lot of pushback against remarks attributed to him that he didn't even make, and some blaming of him for stuff that a few other people, mostly outside of the country, said. Including people who think it's shameful to have got even a kind comment from someone they hate so much that they can't bear to see any sign that she might feel some empathy for another human being.

That level of hate is bizarre. And then those same people profess not to understand why Noone might be concerned about possibly being on the receiving end of such vitriol.

    What remarks exactly?

asserting that Ireland is less safe because of immigration for one.

Backing up Conor McGregor and his politics was another.

You are free to demonise foreigners and think McGregor is our next president if you want, that’s the beauty of living in a free society. And others are free to question it.

I don’t know what Noone was expecting, that because we enjoy his musings on the right sequence of teabag, water and milk, we’d all give him a ‘like’ for anything he says. He decided to make himself a political campaigner, no one did that for him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,638 ✭✭✭volchitsa

Except he didn't did he? He said he wasn't saying that, because there were lots of factors.

But given that a number of immigrant have committed some terrible crimes, he's not wrong that immigration is part of an increased feeling of insecurity in many towns in Ireland. Is the overall rate of crime down over the past few years? I don't know. But his point was about people's feelings that they weren't "allowed" to express such concerns - and he's certainly been proven right in that.

His point was not "Ireland is f…d because of immigration" - it was that by making certain concerns unsayable, there a risk of pushing some people into the arms of the far right.

If he's wrong and people can say whatever they want without being abused and insulted, why did he have to close his account?

The funniest thing now is: how come all the posters giving out about him saying this or that which isn't accurate are not now complaining about him coming out with the howler that Ireland was built by immigrants?

It's almost as though they don't care about accuracy at all. They just want to ensure that he says the nonsense that they approve of.
