Ryanair have really ramped up charging people for bags that "don't fit"

No luck involved if you bags are the right size.

Your bag can be the right size and still fall foul of their boxes. Handles and wheels slightly outside the boxes means passengers can be charged for bags that are the right size.

Yep we saw some poor sod get nabbed by the Ryanair gougers on our flight to Lisbon. We were just relieved it wasn't my girlfriend again. Wait until they nab their first victim then board straight after the unlucky one.

But this is what you get when you fly with Ryanair. I travel regularly and would never fly with them unless there is no other option or my girlfriend books it. People think they are cheaper but not cheaper for all their victims!

Also my mother's friend got charged something like €64 for her handbag. Most have been a big handbag but I'd rather fly with an airline you can relax on. Thank God they don't do long haul.

I personally saw a fella getting checked who had a hard-shell wheelie case about half the permitted size (I never saw such a cute little thing!), had to stick it in the measurer and the wheels stuck out literally a couple of mm.

A big row ensued, we all got held up, but he paid up in the end.

Well, I'd rather not use them, to be honest. As I'm getting older I'd like the flexibility that other airlines offer, and travel with as much luggage as I want.

Upcoming gigs and events: Dry Cleaning, The Shawshank Redemption, Sprints, These Charming Men, Sasha Velour, Disorder Festival, David Byrne, The Cure, Garbage, Bob The Drag Queen, Sigur Ros, Olafur Arnalds, Cabaret Voltaire, Angine de Poitrine, Cardinals

If the handles and wheels make the bag bigger than the permitted size then there is no skulduggery on Ryanair's part.

They have very transparent rules about all aspects of their business. Follow their rules and you'll have no issues.

I don't like their rules so I don't tend to fly with them. They are not always the cheapest option either.

The bag is not 'bigger' though, there can be millimetres of wheel or handle sticking out!

I agree they are not always cheaper, I'll go with them when they are a lot cheaper, if it's much the same, I'll always fly a different airline

    I disagree.

The wheels & handle are all part of the bag. They occupy space. The Ryanair restrictions are a space issue.

If any part of the bag protrudes beyond the markings inside the Ryanair measuring cage, the bag is too big and liable for additional charge. I think this is fair enough.

If there were inconsistencies with the size of the measuring cage, or if it's dimensions were smaller than the size of bag it's purported to be measuring, then I think customers would have a legitimate gripe. I haven't heard anyone claim this though.

some of the stuff people try to bring on is madness.

Personally hate walking around with a case in tow, so often take Bigger bag with more stuff and check it in.

    Good question.

As they are being used as the basis for charging consumers maybe they should be calibrated/checked.

After all scales, pub measures, forecourt fuel pumps etc. are all subject to official inspection.

So despite being "half the permitted size" it didn't fit? I wouldn't want you wallpapering my house :)

    Nice non sequitur.

HeidiHeidi obviously meant that the case was about half size of the measuring frame height-wise, but the wheels stuck out width-wise by a few mm, and the guy was still charged

And don't forget if you want a wheelie bag on Ryanair DON'T buy regular (the one after basic), just add a bag later in the process. A lot of time it makes the priority boarding part very expensive.

On a flight I recently booked was €60 for a wheelie bag and priority yet adding a bag was just €25 return.

Seems the crates were bigger than the specs so as long as the bag fit in the crate nobody cared, until they started enforcing the measurements to the mm.

saw an even better one yesterday, three people had to pay for wheelie bags (because they did not have priority), tagged for the hold and instructed to leave at steps. They didn’t and before takeoff staff came on board to gather them up and put in hold. As usual it was a rammed flight and I don’t think there would have been any overhead space for them.

A lot of the small case now have 4 wheels sticking out. This increases the size. Also stops some cases fitting bottom first into the overheads. that person then puts their case in sideways and takes up the space of 2 carry-ons.

Then if you board after them, your bag can end up at the opposite end of the plane.

They were a little too lax last year and it was being abused and then it was causing the above issues on planes, so simple solution is to implement the very public measurements fully.

The VAST VAST VAST majority get it right. The few that can't understand basic measurements run to the daily muck to whine.

Ryanair love this as it publicises the rule and measurements they got you to agree to at booking.

But is you are unable to understand that the measurement is the TOTAL measurement including wheels and handles, maybe you should book a check-in bag

Posted in another thread, an example of what some of us are talking about….

    image.png

If they're in the mood for catching people, this will be fined. There's a couple of cm above the frame, so although its measurements are technically correct, and it's advertised as Ryanair compliant - this could attract a fine.

It will clearly fit under a seat no problem, but if there's so much as a wheel or a seam peeping out above the frame, they have you bang to rights.

The hardshell I saw getting done was about 2/3 of the size of this bag, with literally a couple of mm outside the frame, and he had to pay up.

I would leave the bag in a bin before I would pay them an extra 60 euro, I wouldn't let them get one over on me.

I'm not convinced that would be anything other than a pyrrhic victory.

it would be mostly boxers, socks and t shirts. could easily replace them with the 60 euro extra they would charge me.

Probably cheaper just to go empty handed and buy your jocks over there!!

No, wouldn't work for me, I'd have more packed than that and the bag is worth a bit too.

I genuinely can’t be accepting of all this inflexibility nonsense and trying to nickel and dime people.. looking now on their website and Aer Lingus and British Airways are a far more user friendly straightforward experience…Ryanair are just going to make the experience you have with them so unreasonable and user unfriendly that people will happily just pay a little extra not to use them..not everything is about money. Yes I enjoy a bargain and an inexpensive fare but I also want a comfortable and reasonable experience, from booking to landing, that is something that can be worth paying a bit extra for….

People need to bring stuff when they go away. If I’m going to Copenhagen tomorrow for 3 nights… it’s going to be mildish in the day but down to 0° at night. So I’m easily going to require jumpers, coat / jacket and my heavy Parka. I think Ryanair is overthinking this and they are going to make it worthwhile paying more to their competitors. Website layout is a confusing over detailed clusterfûck now too… I just can’t be arsed.

Flew Ryanair this morning (small bag only) but bought a tape measure for the luggage crate/cage...

Plenty of people getting caught out and having to pay...

At least from the third photo it looks as if 20cm would have you into the striped zone and chargeable, which is against their own measurement policies
