It's actually a great spot if travelling on down the M11. Best value on that stretch. You'd have AppleGreen next and then Ionity in Gorey. Not exactly the cheapest out there. Carrickmines is perfectly placed to get you all the way to Wexford or Rosslare. And it's easily accessible from the M50 with the added ability to get some food or coffee.

Agreed. It's much better than coyne's cross, as Applegreen there is often supply limited, and Ionity is thronged with no real options of stuff to do. I like to combine charging with something else where possible, like shopping.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,879 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

But you guys should have the range to go Wexford to Dublin and back without charging no?

I'm mean is this a charging stop to somewhere else or are the shops the destination.

You make it sound like you're there a lot. That you don't need to stop there but are choosing to do so. Which if it's busy you'd think you'd avoid it.

There are other parts of the country from where you would use the M50 to access the M11 y'know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,104 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

So if I've done some driving in the day already and didnt leave with 100%, or, more likely, I'm in the Ora, we'd need to charge somewhere to do wexford-dublin-wexford.

Typically I'd go to Carrickmines if I need pet food, or want to go to tk maxx etc or get coffee and donuts. Ikea collection is there, as is stuff like Currys. It's the largest/closest/easily accessible shopping outlet with charging on the dublin to wexford route. If I wanted the quickest charging (irrelevant really in the Ora as it maxes at 60kW or so) I'd go to Ionity. I'd only go to Applegreen if I had to.

I was just wondering why Carrickmines is so busy. I've never used it. Never occurred to me people would drive from Wexford to do a shop there for things that it would seem mostly can be got in Wexford for example. IKEA maybe not.

I use the M50 to access the M11. I just wouldn't have thought or needed to stop at carrickmines. It seems it's a destination rather than pitstop.

I get the avoid the apple green if you need to charge on route regularly. I like their chargers that have long cables. The ESB ones are often too short or restricted space to get to the cable. Yes it's cheaper but if something I don't often then the extra cost of AG I'm not going to lose too much sleep over.

If it's a regular journey then that's different. I suspect these are regular shipping trips and it's destination charging. Maybe what it needs is more AC charging.

And what if you're coming from Sligo? Or Donegal? And heading to Wexford or even Wicklow? Or it's a round trip and you're starting back at 80%. Lots of scenarios where that hub works as a top up spot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,104 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

Yup, semi regular trips. And yes, the stuff could be got in wexford. But that's another trip 30 minutes each way. If I need to charge and can use that otherwise wasted time to get some errands done, why wouldn't i.

Also the AG avoidance is solely based on unreliable speeds. You can get 150kW or you can get 25-75kW. No predicting it, so it's useless! The only time I ever rely on it is if I'm taking a random and rare long trip in my 2011 leaf, as it can just barely reach applegreen and other DC are too close.

I guess it's more about planning hubs so they aren't congested. Part of that is looking how they are used. People are complaining it's always busy and queued. I'm wondering isn't that evitable putting a fast charger at a shopping center.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,879 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

No idea. Just for giggles I put Sligo to Wexford in ABRP and it didn't route through Dublin. So I put a Dublin stop don't route to charging at Carrickmines. Finally routed a stop a Carrickmines and neither that or any of the other things I tried routed me to charge at Carrickmines.

But that's an academic exercise. Different ranged cars will be different. Also you might like a location for subjective reasons, a favourite cafe. A friend living nearby you can meet for lunch.

I just see this hub mentioned a lot here and faceache as congested. Never used it, or the shopping centre. I'm just creating discussion.

That's weird, I did with Google maps and it routed through Dublin.

It's never been congested when I used it, but the last time was about six months ago tbf.

Must be a nice little money spinner for eCars.

It's very convenient to M50, less than a minute off route unless car park is jammers.

Being a hub you are fairly guaranteed a free unit, unlike many other near M50/M11 sites.

Lots of food, shopping options very close.

Also a lot of people only know ESB ecars, are not aware say Tesla Sandyford is open, Lidl south Bray etc.

Its also south Dublin so high EV ownership and popular with affluent people. Nearby Racecourse etc.

PS I have never used it, pass by regularly with hundreds of km.of range from home charger.

For me Google maps gives two routes one through Dublin the other Athlone and Carlow 10 mins longer. But that for an ICE not an EV and also this exact time. Not that you might choose to route through Dublin regardless.

I'm glad these spaces have an extra bit of width, even if it's only about 10cm — the ones opposite are just a bit too tight

It also annoys me a bit that the layout of these ESB hubs often encourages people to use the other side of the same charger, rather than a different one. For example, if you're charging at the one marked in blue, and the one in red is also occupied, then someone new comes along, the layout makes them more likely to choose the green one (and therefore load share with you) rather than the purple one (where they'd have the full load all to themselves) — both because most people aren't aware of the load balancing, and because the layout makes it hard to get into and out of your car when you're beside someone else

I've noticed the ESB chargers in particular seem to have poor layout of spaces. I've struggled with a few of them. They are no longer my goto charger as a result.

The existing ones are absolutely stupid in design. Only 4 ID4s can use them at one time. If in Blanch you could tilt vs the parking lines here it is impossible because of the side concrete wall. There is virtually zero distance from the parking line to the wall. Opening doors is optional in the designer's view

I've had that issue. Can get into the space but not out of the car. Or need to go on the verge behind to make it ready. Unless there's a wall as in the photo.

Another noob question from me ... I'm trying to familiarise myself with various providers and get used to the different setups before taking on any longer trips. My ecars charging card hasn't arrived yet, but will I be able to use one of their chargers just using the app? I've already set up a PAYG account and added £20 of credit. (I'm in NI, but presumably all the chargers operate the same way ...)

These layouts make me glad I pay for Remote-controlled parking for my Mini!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 184 ✭✭spudwiser

That is a woeful design/layout. As mentioned, the width of the spaces are awful and the wall only serves to make this sit even less usable.

What are the cable lengths like here?

Probably not applicable to the Countryman, but on my Cooper SE I could forward park and still use that charger layout to charge from the other side. You'd need to be fairly confident of how close you were getting to the front wall.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,988 ✭✭✭✭mfceiling

You can start the charge from the app north or south.

They are plugging away, Bangor NI

Don't have a picture but works started on the hub in Airside, Swords a couple of weeks ago

Things are progressing quite slowly it seems, last I saw they'd dug a hole and piled up some ducting. Excellent progress!

If they'd put the hub underwater it would be easier to get to, that place is a traffic disaster

I guess it'll be good for McDs and Woodies though

Oh interesting! I knew there was an SSE Hub coming literally metres away, but I didn't know this was being upgraded to a hub too. It's very local to me — although I liked the AC station as my car can charge at 22kW and it meant it was rarely occupied.

I can see these being frequently ICEd though, given how full the Bloomfields car park usually is (and Just Eat drivers love to sit there all day outside McDonalds waiting for an order)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166 ✭✭dsandson

The chargers are in a new location sort of halfway between McDonalds and Starbucks. As you says though the whole car park there is busy. If you look closely though you'll see that they've moved the AC charger over as well, so looks like 8 bays. The big question will be how long it takes to get the grid connection. Ionity in Dungannon are still waiting.

I'd have to do this to charge and get out of the car I'd say. Probably piss off the guy in the bay beside me and a few pedestrians as well

It'd be a great conversation with the parking warden though, hand them the keys and tell them if they can park the car in the lines and plug in you'll take the fine 😂
