Clearly McGregor is Trumps stormtrooper here in Ireland- considering his businesses are in the toilet there’s feic all else to occupy his time -

I’d love to be present when he tries to convince one local authority to nominate him - no less four.

I expect a constitutional legal challenge on the nomination process - who knows what that outcome could be- but we need to watch ourselves in Ireland - the MAGA and project 2025 playbooks are being exported - some tricks won’t work this side of the Atlantic but some just might - reiterating the legal outcome of the “rape” trial time and time again is good practice - let it haunt him on a daily basis

Not just a private citizen but also the richest man in the world who is owns a satellite network with over 7000 satellites in orbit around the world.

This is like James Bond evil bad guy in real life who doesn't even have to threaten any one to get to do what ever he wants.

He just has to tell an orange buffoon what he wants to hear and he has access to everything with nobody stopping him.

I mean how has nobody of senior rank in the military called this out and said it is damaging to the USA?!

The plot of Tomorrow Never Dies isn't hugely dissimilar actually.

“I mean how has nobody of senior rank in the military called this out and said it is damaging to the USA?!”

Because they likely voted for him and also want to protect their pension. The military wouldn’t be against eroding citizens rights either in order to gain valuable information - so you can take it there won’t be a military coup anytime soon

What conceivable reason would there be for Musk to see sensitive pentagon war planning documents?

Is Musk just going to go get copies for Drumpf so he can share them to Russia? Totally bizarre.

Drumpf apparently wants to also seize control of Ukrainian nuclear power plants. Bizarrrrrrre.

Shutting down the Department of Education is just so on brand for the absolute stupidest administration I have ever witnessed. It truly is Idiocracy manifest.

Because he owns 1000s of satellites and will require 1000s more - wars are fought in space these days as much as on planet earth - without satellites ground forces are helpless - I’m assuming having this information will inform Musk around his satellite space strategy

Don’t worry we were told by Americans in us military on this and parallel thread that there are “checks and balances”

America has a long tradition of cabinet members unelected. Robert McNamara went from ceo of General Motors/ Ford to defense secretary without standing. Presumably he had access to the pentagon when he was justifying the vietnam war

At very least, thanks to the degree of responsibility individual states had with education, the American school system will keep rolling. However problems will unsurprisingly start to arise pretty soon in States that have a less than enlighted view on damned near everything.

I suspect an even more stark contrast along the Mason-Dixon Line where those North of it get some form of functional schooling, while those South of it will be more inclined towards becoming superstitious sociopaths who take the bible literally and scream on the sight of jetliner chem-trails in the sky because "The Devil! Something-something!!"

Should the Dems actually get their act together enough to win back power, it will take decades to repair the damage that's about to happen to the makeup of the US.

Very little grounds to challenge the nomination process, let alone make a case that could be successful. The rules for nomination are in the constitution and are explicit.

According to WH press secretary, they aren't actually going to shut down the DoE. That was just another lie from Trump.

Because they need it to administer student loans, etc. Now, I bet they fully intended to close it all. It was only when this question was raised that the actual impact of shutting down the DoE became apparent, and she made something up on the spot. That is what it sounded like to me.

But they would have been confirmed by the Senate, no ? I don't think Musk has been, or has he ?

They can't shutter it fully because that is illegal without an act of Congress seemingly.

What they can do is reduce and change it so it no longer functions as it does. It will be changed to a loan administration and statistics gathering operation.

It will exist really in name only. Trump was quite clear though about his intentions with the Department so he does have a mandate to do it.

No wonder he wants to abolish the Department of Education entirely. He does love those poorly educated people after all. Some world we're living in at the moment.

While I agree in general, it’s unlikely to stop a challenge- and you don’t know what that might bring up- maybe a referendum making it easier to get on the ticket?

That's an amazing stastic to see in action but not at all surprising. Can really see why they're going after the DoE and universities. Remove the intelligentsia and keep everyone uneducated, easier to manipulate.

Reminds me of Pol Pot targetting the intellectual class in Cambodia.

Is this not pure extortion and using his power to settle scores with law firms he doesn't like for personal reasons.

    https://www.msn.com/en-ie/news/world/top-democrat-affiliated-law-firm-offers-40m-in-legal-services-to-trump-administration-as-part-of-deal-to-end-executive-order/ar-AA1BlSU9

The Trump administration and a top, Democrat-affiliated law firm reached an agreement for the White House to drop an executive order targeting the firm in exchange for the company doing tens of millions of dollars in free legal work to support administration initiatives.

Under the agreement, Trump will drop his executive order last week aimed at the firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP. The order suspended the firm’s security clearances, barred it from federal buildings, and threatened government contractors that did business with the firm.

In exchange for dropping the order, Paul, Weiss agreed to represent clients from “the full spectrum of political viewpoints,” commit to not using diversity hiring, and offer $40 million in pro bono legal services to support administration initiatives in areas like aiding veterans, promoting fairness in the justice system, and combatting antisemitism.

The president announced the deal on social media on Thursday evening and singled out Mark Pomerantz, a former Paul, Weiss partner who later helped the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office build a criminal case against Trump.

To a very large extent, that's all it does now anyway. It's a way of shuffling money from Bucket A to Spender B. It does have a few other monitoring functions for things like civil rights in the education system, but it has nothing to do with the actual conduct of education, setting curricula, etc.

Whether it's more efficient to shut it down, transfer those functions back to Treasury or DoJ etc such as they were before the Dept of Ed was created and save the department overhead costs, or keep the Dept of Ed overhead costs and retain the efficiency of dedicated personnel to the section, I'm not sure, but I'm also not sure there's any other function of government which requires a middle-man in the process. However, a partial shutdown without Congress shutting it all down seems to me to be the worst of both worlds.

As for Musk and China, watch as the Pentagon show him Plan C, whilst keeping Plans A and B safely hidden behind the painting. But, no, I don't see why he needs to be briefed even on C.

Thats absolutely crazy stuff. The dictionary definition of abuse of power.

I'm the president...I'll threaten anyone I want with the power of my office, till they do what I ask

If I were a particularly sharp DoD person who knew that Donnie and his flock of Facism-buddies couldn't be trusted with important secrets, I would have created credible-looking mis-information to share with them.

An even sharper DoD person might even cook up mis-information designed to misdirect the Chinese from thier actual plans with the assumption that they know Musk would share anything he gets with Beijing / Moscow.

Add to all of that the likelyhood that spoofers like Musk or Trump simply don't pay anywhere near enough attention to realise if they've been handed a fabricated plan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,705 ✭✭✭skimpydoo

Well if anyone on DoD does as you say they better hope their ruse is not found out as Trumps wrath will be massive. However I don't see how fake documents can be magically whipped up at the last minute, and I think the DoD people you mentioned leaked the visit to the New York Times.

Trumps current approval rating in 47% to 48.2% depending on the source.

In his first term, this rating was between 49% just before the pandemic and 34% just after J6
