Hooray, I have finally reached total saturation with Trump. I find that I no longer care what he does - except to the extent it affects Europe - and no longer feel compelled to watch the endless output about him. I realised when I found I was only very vaguely skimming these posts and felt no further compulsion to debate about him. I may drop in occasionally but I think I am done.

Aye I reached the “oh well the leopards are eating their faces” stage a while back

It’s hard to have any sympathy or empathy anymore for Americans, they be paying for this stupidity for decades

It was same with Brexit (this Trump circus is like Brexit^10), I only cared enough for the parts that directly impacted on me, Ireland and Europe

Peoples only hope is that courts will push back on Doge as it takes apart the federal government and also illegally access,s peoples personal data .doge is going to cut medicaid social security payments by one trillion dollars

Trump .said he would not cut medicaid in his campaign people trusted trump as he did not make cuts in his time as president before 2024

.trump is going to shut down or privatise federal agencys which means people will get low quality services at a higher price .

Medicaid will still exist but I'd you have a serious illness like cancer it,ll be harder to get medical treatment for free and it ,ll take longer to see a doctor just to get a prescription.

And of course you,ll still be paying the tax's you were paying 5 years ago .

America will become more like the UK eg life will be good if you are rich or on a high salary .life will be tough if you are working class or a low level office worker . The quality of life for millions of Americans and trump voters will be mediocre The question is will there be enough courts and judges out there who will stand up to doge and stop trump from taking apart federal agencys setup by act of Congress .

At this point the rule of law and justice system is in danger eg trump can use the fbi to harass and attack his enemies and take away funding from Universitys who stand up for free speech and open debate around political issues .Some people are leaving America rather than live under trumps rule

The supreme court already made a ruling that gives trump more power and made it hard to prosecute him in the future .At least 100,000 federal workers will lose their jobs and if course some of them will be trump supporters . Even conservatives are worried about the reckless manner doge is acting eg sacking highly trained workers that are necessary to maintain infrastructure and to help the public as due to climate change serious fires and floods will become more frequent. Federal agencys will be needed if the 1000s of homes destroyed in the fires are to be replaced with fire resistant buildings

I never tuned into his first presidency but the fact that the majority who bothered to vote actually reelected him means the current democratic mandate is "every day is flip the table day".

The only thing to measure now is how much damage an anti government government can do.

I never thought I'd see this.

Edit - they aren't warning against travel, its just an advisory notice about what could happen.

"Indeed, but at the same time he did run on a platform of abolishing the department and the majority voted for him - so he definitely has the mandate to shrink it to the maximum extent within his powers."

    Wouldn't necessarily agree with that.

He ran on many things... Ending the war in Ukraine, lowering egg prices etc etc. so I don't think you can say the public voted for all of his manifesto and therefore he has a clear mandate to do one part.

Saw this story today on bbc

    https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cly67j35y99o

Interesting that I was actually also turned back at that Vancouver crossing (well it was N of Washington and S of Vancouver) some 50 yrs ago when I answered correctly to Canadian Border Police that I had taken marijuana in the past.

Back to the States and hitched home via Kennedy Airport.

nailed it.. America created this monster and facilitated him, encouraged him, excused and defended him. Not just some Americans, an absolute **** load of them… away with them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,928 ✭✭✭thatsdaft

A colleague from there said “he done loads of good things” to which I replied “such as?” and got silence

here’s the bloody thing.. if he wasn’t so hellbent on conflict and aggro and division, he could absolutely (in the position he’s in) achieve so much to help people. But he’s just that loose/crazy/volatile/immature type person.

This story was put to the press secretary. She asked what the source was. Reuters was the response. She denied it and said that particular source was not reputable.

True, but if enough of this keeps going on (and reported on) it wouldn't surprise me if it'll torpedo tourism to the States.

It gives the impression that your otherwise nonchalant trip to the parks in Orlando could turn into an extended stay in an ICE prison or a trip on the Gitmo Express for not crossing every "t" or forgetting to dot an "i". (I exaggerate, but it's the impression I'm trying to paint)

A lot of this year's summer holidays to the States would likely have already been booked by now, but I can imagine that repeat business might not look great, especially if a large enough cohort of those tourists get targeted.

I wasn't too incined to visit the States myself before all of this, but right now it feels like I might never set foot there.

One of the aspects of the US turn towards authoritarianism and lashing out at its soon to be I guess former allies is that it is likely doing itself significant economic harm going forward. Already you can see in Europe and Canada that future defense spending which is set to ratchet up significantly will increasingly be directed away from buying US weaponry. Your seeing more and more stories of boycotts of US companies products, as you say here this kind of border behaviour is going to have a negative impact on tourism in the future etc etc.

The fed left rates the same and warned of potential rises because inflation is picking up, instead of what every one expected as cuts this year

    Trump not happy of course

    Oh well

Edit; they also dropped their gdp growth projections

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,911 ✭✭✭eire4

Powell also said that while consumer sentiment has declined sharply that economic activity seems strong. I wonder and this is me purely speculating is there a lot of stock piling going on at the moment in the US with people buying various products in bulk and doing some stock piling in anticipation of more tariffs being imposed on them and thus raising prices.

been watching turning point the last few days on Netflix.

this trump term will be like the USA’s collapse of the USSR.

We will be watching documentaries in 20 years about how the once SuperPower collapsed.

China the meanwhile must be loving it all, Russia on it knees and the US destroying itself from within.

If Europe steps up to the plate and starts to look after itself it could come out the other side better off than it went in.
