fridge freezing

I've got a Bosch fridge/freezer (model KGS3001GB/51) which is about 25 years old. A few weeks ago, the fridge section started to freeze up periodically - I'd switch it off to let it warm up and it would work fine for a period of maybe a day to a few days before acting up again

The obvious likely fault is the thermostat but I'm having difficulty accessing it. The control panel is at the top of the fridge (by V05 in the pic) with the cover secured by two screws on the underside but I can't get the cover off and don't want to risk breaking it by forcing it. Presumably it's further secured by hidden tabs or maybe double sided tape - any ideas how to get at it? If I can get it out I can at least test it and hopefully get a part number off it.

I called into a shop (who used to do repairs but the old guy has dementia) and the woman there insisted the problem was the compressor. The fridge got down to -13C while I was away for a couple of weeks so I don't think that's it. She just wanted to sell me a new fridge. Granted, the thing doesn't owe me anything but I'd prefer to try a simple repair before I replace it with a cheapnified unit that will likely only last 5 years and probably require an app and internet access to operate :)

Unlikely the stat, start by checking all around the magnetic door seal for slits that would allow air into the fridge, you would also need to check if the door has dropped because of wear in the bottom hinge. looking at the diagram if it is an integrated unit disconnect the wooden door and see if the problem goes, if so the fridge needs to be brought forward in the unit to allow the fridge door to close correctly. (if the ice build up is soft snowy type definitely air getting in)

Seal is in good nick and the door has not dropped. It's a freestanding unit.

No significant ice build up, just a shallow layer on the back wall...even after 2 weeks without being opened and interior temperature at -13

very hard to determine exactly what’s happening over the net, ideally a tech with refrigeration experience would need to see it, I have rarely found Bosch units of this era giving stat trouble, when you say minus 13 degrees I presume that is the freezer section, observe it and check if it’s cutting out at all, two issues can cause this, a faulty stat but at the age of your ff it is more likely to have developed an internal gas leak seeing as you say doors and seals are good

Its never going to be too cold with a gas leak, or compressor issue.

You could be fooled by a faulty display; more likely than a cooling fault. Are you checking with a real thermometer. Is there a 'fast freeze' option switched on?

Run your finger along the front panel and feel if theres any indentations under your finger, could be a screw hidden under.

Some of these have the same control for both the fridge and freezer section, so cant be controlled individually. However, the diagram is showing what looks like a mechanical stat on the very left bottom of the page. This could be the freezer stat; the fridge stat Page 3 diagram shows Type 'electronic' stat with a set of resistance values in a table below. 'verdampferfuhlerwerte' seems to mean temp sensor.

I would look at this sensor first thing.

I wonder what your dial setting is at.

no, it read -13 in the fridge section, measured with a standalone thermometer

there's no faulty display (ie no display). Checking with a real thermometer and the food is freezing - hard to be fooled by that :)

Fast freeze is for the freezer part, not the fridge and is not on in any case. Dial is at the warmest setting

if it has a gas leak it will run continuously and freeze the contents, ideally a gauge would need to be put on it to determine if it is low on refrigerant, check by wetting your finger tip and see how far down the back panel of the fridge section it is making ice as your finger will tend to stick to the ice , in most units it will freeze 2/3 way down
