    Because a lower driver could steal away a point from a leading driver. They aren't doing it for their own benefit, it's to hurt another driver, and possibly help another in the process. This is one of the reasons it was removed, I'm sure.

    More often than not the driver with the 30 second gap was in the top 10 anyway

    True. My point is that if they simply wanted to stop the Ricciardo incident from happening again (which seemed to be the trigger for the removal), then this rule tweak would have achieved that.

    In any case, the fastest lap bonus never really had the impact on the racing that was intended.

    Wouldnt have had any impact on the driver or team finishing positions either for 2024 season, if fastest lap wasnt awarded.

    Cant be bothered checking the years before that right now.

    It's not really stealing a point though. It's not like it was docked from anyone. It was just meant to be an extra point. I don't think it was the Danny Ric thing that caused it to be scrapped, likely more that the data showed it wasn't really doing anything as often the teams in front were getting it so wasn't causing some moving in the driver standings so decided to just let it go. The Danny Ric thing more brought it to the attention of everyone.
