Can you remember what the 6 were ?

At a guess maybe Camden and Meantime but I can't think of any others that are that old.

The Cock & Hen in Fulham, The Florence in Herne Hill (both owned by the same company), Zero Degrees in Blackheath (still there), Brew Wharf in Borough, The Horseshoe in Hampstead and Bünker in Covent Garden, though there's a bit of an asterisk over the last one as it may not have still been brewing its own by then. I also went to Mash on Oxford Circus, but it must have just recently gone out of business: all the furniture was still there but it was closed.

The Horseshoe, aka McLaughlin's, was the proto-Camden Town. The owner went on to start Camden Town in 2010. Meantime didn't have drinking at the brewery, they used The Greenwich Union pub as their tap. They later, briefly, had a brewpub in the Old Naval College in Greenwich, which opened in 2012.

The only one I definitely done business with after I moved there in 2012 was The Florence when it was home to Head in a Hat brewery.

Never heard of the rest except maybe I was once in the Fulham pub.

Insane how the landscape changed in a few years.

Dew Drop Brewhouse seem to have found some way of distribution, with cans now in Cork: https://x.com/bradleys_offlic/status/1896923909519466992

Is there any particular beer in the line up worth getting?

Peter's in Dublin is up for sale. Always popped in as it was one of the few "regular" pubs I know in central Dublin that does actual craft.

Never a fan of it for its pricing; and it just somehow feels "off" - like a film set version of a nice pub.

I also don't remember craft last time I was in, but it was quite some time ago as the pint price was enough to stop me returning! Bar Rua is close enough for craft and a bit cheaper.

They're all fairly solid and well made. I like the Vienna lager in particular, mostly for the style's rarity value in Ireland.

Always has 3 Wicklow on tap and Hope in the fridge. As for price I just don't look when I'm in Dublin because it all seems pricey.

Bar Rua is Galway Bay so it's a big no for me.

Any specific reason you avoid GBB bars?

The ex-Carrig GBB/Bru Hospitality bars are very different to the remaining always GBB bars anyway though.

Don't want to get to deep into it because I've been through it all already here but every one I have been into was very poorly run to the point I have walked out of a few of them before I even got a drink (which it really takes a lot for me to do).

I like the beers just not the pubs.

I have absolutely no recollection of ever seeing or hearing about Peter's Pub, but I must have walked past it dozens of times when I lived in Dublin. I think I must have assumed it was just an old man pub with no craft on at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,052 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Looks like one and kinda is. I think I went in once because everywhere else was full during the COVID table service days and discovered they had Wicklow Weisse and fell for the place. Especially the people watching seats outside.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 3,390 Mod ✭✭✭✭Black Sheep

For me, it's a bit meh. There are other pubs with more craft options.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,052 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Are there any others around that area that are both a good "traditional" pub and have good beer ?

I'de love to find something like Dudley's but more central ?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 5,893 Mod ✭✭✭✭irish_goat

The Long Hall used to always have a few craft options.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72,970 ✭✭✭✭L1011

GBB now pushing Ostara as being significantly cheaper in their pubs - I paid 6.60 last week but they're saying €6 now on social media.

I remember when Full Sail was €4.50 and nearly every similar beer was over a fiver, or even 6, everywhere else - so they've gone for this market segment before, just with an IPA not a stout.

It's not that Peter's Pub is better or worse than most of the pubs around it, I think 1-2 craft options on tap is probably the norm for city centre pubs at this point.

Years ago I think it stood out in that it was more gay-friendly than other pubs in the area, I think it was like 50/50 a gay pub when I was in college, but you wouldn't really know if you went in necessarily. It was a little less aggro than some other city centre pubs in the past. But I haven't been in it in quite a few years.

In that immediate neck of the woods I think Caribou and Bar Rua probably have the widest selection of craft beer, that I can think of. Caribou is what I think of as contemporary, it's comfortable, but depends on what you mean by "traditional", I guess. I think it suffers from a perception that it's mainly a place you go to eat rather than have a few drinks.

I do really like the Long Hall. If I was in town, around there, then that along with The Palace would be firm favourites.

If I was over more towards Trinity / Pearse Street then I really like Moss Lane at the moment, they have Hopburgh Helles, Dublin Bay IPA, Dublin Bay red and Barrelhead. Think I'm right in saying all Hopkins & Hopkins / Bow St.

At this point is the Northside actually a better location for craft beer bars? …Fidelity, Underdogs etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,052 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I'm gonna try Caribou next time I'm up. Wasn't a big fan when it was P.Mac's as a pub but would still pop in the odd time for the beer. I'll check out Moss Lane too.

Fidelity took me a few try's but I really like it now. You get some genuinely different beers in there including lambic which is rare outside of Bierhaus Cork. Can't wait to try that new food menu too.

What I keep finding is pubs that have 1 or 2 craft either have the usual international stuff like Lagunitas or Brew Dog or fake stuff like 5 Lamps. Really what I want is Dublin or Dublin adjacent beers and if I can't find that I would take a good pub selling macro over a bad one selling craft.

Yeah but didn't they remove them recently to replace them with Changing Times?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 12,061 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

Unless it's undergone a radical change recently, O'Neill's on Suffolk Street fits the bill there. You do need to do a bit of walking to inspect the taps, though — don't feel under pressure to order at the first bar you come to ☺️

You can lump the Lagunitas in with the fake stuff: that's brewed in Cork by Heineken.

Would have never thought of checking out O'Neill's. I think the name always put me off.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 3,390 Mod ✭✭✭✭Black Sheep

I think you might like Moss Lane. It's quite traditional in its styling. They have a good Irish whisky selection too. Small pub though, if you go in on a busy night after 8pm then often all the tables/seats are gone.

I feel like I pop in this thread periodically to ask what is going on with Larkins.

I've been getting ads for Rí-Rá on Instagram, who seem more interested in selling me a jersey than their beer. Their lager is now for sale in Aldi as single cans, as opposed to a 4-pack as it was a few weeks ago. It's unremarkable, in my view.

The Untappd page suggests it is contract brewed at Larkin's. Their Instagram is still live and seems to show them actively in business, but I don't remember the last time I saw them in Cork.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 12,061 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

Irish brewery information on Untappd is often my best guess at what's happening. The brewing licence in Kilcoole is now owned by Rí-Rá but there still seems to be new Larkins beer coming out, so I've flipped that now, to say that Larkins is a contract brand at Rí-Rá. I've no idea what the business arrangements are behind this: whether someone from Larkins as-was is still in charge of the brand, or if it's purely what Rí-Rá is calling its non-lager beers.

Martin’s off licence in Fairview had a nice little event this evening. Hope, Rascals and White Hag doing tastings. Nice to try a few I hadn’t had before.
Dot Brew and Whiplash were supposed to be there too but cancelled.

I think that RiRa and Larkins are still one in the same but they've tried to separate the lager from the craft as they are different markets.

The lager is trying to eek out market share in the lager market.

I quite like it - it's sweeter than others so a nice alternative if you don't want to pay for a big brand or an overpriced 'premium' lager and you don't want to order a soft drink / hoppy beer.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 12,061 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

The brewery definitely changed hands. The founder is no longer involved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,773 ✭✭✭zoobizoo

    Yes the family sold up.

But I think the new owners are brewing both RiRa and the craft beers and trying to not cross over in the branding in any way.

Paywalled from The Currency re Hopfully:

    https://thecurrency.news/articles/182768/a-colourful-brewry-and-a-neighbourhood-restaurant-are-the-latest-to-seek-help/

Teaser: Food service companies in Ireland have been struggling. Some have been forced to ask for formal help to avoid insolvency through Scarp. On Wednesday, March 12, another two companies joined their ranks. The Small Companies Administrative Rescue Process (Scarp) allows companies which have short-term financial problems but are deemed to be fundamentally viable to call for help with restructuring. It is a form of examinership – but for smaller companies. Hopfully Brewing Co and the company behind the Dublin restaurant Urban 8 are now using the process in a bid to avoid insolvency. Beer, art, friends Could three friends turn…

Checked it out over the weekend. Not much in the way of craft beer but they at least had 2 actually craft Irish.

O'Neill's had a very nice selection but it was Paddy's Day so the place was a zoo. Would definitely go back again though.
