Arcade High Score Challenge - Round 12

    For this fortnight's challenge, there could only be one contender:

    GIGA WING 2

    (joking, joking)

    No the actual game is something completely different, and one I've never played before:

    CHASE HQ

    1988 Taito racing-action game with legally distinct similarities to some popular hit 80s media.

    Standard 60 second time limit for this.

    Now get out there officers, and arrest some bad guys on suspicion of first degree murder.

    Zero experience with this other than knowing of its existence - great choice! Haven't actually had a racing based game yet.

    Great choice , we haven't had a racer game yet . I just remeber it in the arcade and it was rock hard. taking the down the first car was even a task !!

    More of a lucky and wild guy but always want to give this a go. Also the C64 port is rubbish so the specify fans used to use it to abuse us.

    Well the old steering wheel is dead as a door nail .

    Time to get serious with it now . Seems I can change the internal PSU with and external laptop one with same specs with a bit of jiggery pokery so I'll try that.

    God damn or , why are arcade cabs the only thing you can turn on for the first time in 10 years and they just work

    Ahhh feck this 😂 I have it powering up now but that's it. I give up .I might actually try the game at some stage.

    It was actually a great wheel with lovely force feedback if I remeber . Joystick for me so

    I'll lay the gauntlet for the first night:

    Got to the third car but kept hitting other motorists and wasted my turbos. Got a mediocre first car with 18 left on the clock but a pretty spectacular second car with 41 left on the clock for a massive bonus.

    Couldnt resist giving it quick go .only realised half way through there was high low gear shift , world version I downloaded doesn't have on screen indicator , I noticed your version does ! Mapped the Button anyway and the version starts in high gear . So I was going snails pace at the green light !

    The gear position display is a MAME thing, so it's not tied to a particular version of the game rom.

    Nahhh it still wasn't in mame menu . It's supposed to be in video options .

    I realised I was using 078 core so changed to 139 and up she pops 👌🏻

    I'm liking the game. I'm guessing it's on the F3 board which has scaling but only a single CPU unlike the dual CPU beast that was outrun so it's not quite as smooth or nice looking. The speech is really clear.

    I've found that dropping the gear is way better for taking corners than breaking.

    Im yet to play it, properly . any spare time I've had I've been fluting around with my wheel to fix it or fluting around in mame to sort the config. Now it's working on mame but gear is always set to high and pressing the gear shift button sets it to low but if I let go of Button it goes back to high . It doesn't stick !!

    Ill attempt again later when I've time or I'll just stick it on my laptop and be done with it

    I am liking the overtaking combo system for adding a bit of spice to the scoring, but especially liking how fast a run is - done and dusted in 5-10 mins as opposed to 15-20 mins for a good Giga Wing run!

    I also forgot that the scrolling in these games makes me dizzy focusing on them ...like outrun and super hangon.

    I was going to pick space harrier for my last game choice and then remembered

    Mad week with stupid life getting in my way all of a sudden , the cheek .

    Fifth car tonight. Loads of points to get a better score here as I got very poor multipliers on all the cars.

    Only 5 stages so a 1cc clear might be possible.

    It's there for the taking. It was my worst best run where I managed to finish off all the cars but with only a few seconds left on the clock. The fifth stage car is definitely doable if you don't drive like a blind wombat like I did.

    1cc run is definitely doable, though as you say I've found the timing of taking down the cars very inconsistent. Even without any obvious crashes and decent boost use there can be a good 10-15 second variance in how fast I take down even the first two cars from run to run.

    Also would be nice if there was a time bonus for completing the pre-ramming first phase of a level in good time. There might be a scoring bonus for it I haven't noticed, but seems a shame there's no bigger reward for finishing it with 5-10 seconds on the clock.
