It’s a very good road , I drove upto Athlone tonight for a few days away with my better half. There was a lovely setting orange moon for the last hour aswell , was a great night for a long spin. 😎Up early for breakfast now in the Am and back down the road for golf !

Hav'nt hit a golf ball either on a golf course or driving range since mc creddin. I have however taken a leaf out of the Chinese book on how they teach their kids to play by practicing without hitting a golf ball for six months.

The living room carpet was starting to wear away in one spot so i was building up confidence that i was going places until i decided to send a video of what i though was my new improved swing last night to our very own boards resident pro Benny Harmon. Unfortunately it did'nt take him long to burst my bubble😭, so appologies to my playing partners tomorrow in advance.

Hopefully i might get a chance to stop off in Birr on the way down in the morning.

Ps i have decided to postpone any of the usual side wagers for the forseeable future in order to focus on the golf.😉

Folks, we're all good for this morning. Course is closed at the moment due to frost, but I've been told it'll almost certainly be opened by 10am. There might be a slight delay in our tee times, but it should be 30 mins at most. Assume we're in time till I update later though.

    I'll put up a full confirmation at 10am 👍

Thanks a million again lads for organising, a long but very enjoyable day.

Had the pleasure of playing with @Gerry T @token56 and @bakerbhoy - all were superb company, and some good stuff was played all around. Nobody disgraced themselves.

Baker's touch is superb around the greens, some brilliant up-and-downs over the course of the 18. Token has some serious distance and hit some really pure hybrids, while Gerry hit some excellent shots throughout, whiskers away from chipping in on the 10th.

Personally after the last and my first outing, I was thrilled with 30 points. One of the very few times I finished with the same ball I started with.

Said to Token beforehand I was just going to plot my way around the course and I'm glad I stuck with the plan and didn't start to try and play outside my ability. Two short putts missed, one I didn't give enough respect and the other I got spooked from the first one, would have given me another two points. Overall though extremely happy.

The course was really superb (if a little long for me!), a real privilege to play such a beautiful course on such a nice day.

    See ye next month!

    The longest day.

Woke up at 530 and could not get back asleep . Then drove to practically Galway and back. For like a 5.5 hour round.

    Mad day.

I definitely over did the caffeine and the poor lads had to listen to a monologue for a good 5 hours – sorry lads, lack of sleep.

All above sounds like it should have been a disaster of a day. But it is what the BGS is all about, a long drive to an unusual course , in unusual and memorable landscape.

Besides my constant talking – a good days craic was had , with now a long term Boards mate, a Post Punk. A few newer lads in Sorbet , and awec.

All sound lads , up for a laugh, but to be honest, we had to get on , because the pace was terrible and the group ahead of us were moving for nobody. If in reality there was probably someone ahead of them . Look it was just the unfortunate sequence of a last throw of winter . A long winter.

Course had obviously still got the grit on the fairways – and grass was long. So the white tees were going to be a challenge. Love the shape of the course, the natural use of the land. The mature real trees. Would be stunning in June and July.

As always , there is a great anticipation on the first tee at a boards outing. Portumna 1st tees is a tight space – the delay – all the players around, added to the craic and build up.

I have to admit the practice putting green made a balls of me. The pace was amazing. I don’t think it was reflective of the course at all. I just never go going on the greens all day. It was unfortunate – because from a ball striking perspective , I hit some great shots. But never got rewarded.

The 3 lads had great moments. A post punk is a more powerful player these days , but a slice came in, and , he could not shift it all day. Awec looks very poised and well positioned over the ball and when he connects, is a powerful player. Sorbet – has a beautiful tempo and lovely swing and will definitely be in the teen whs in next few years. A lovely calm nature to all 3 lads. What on earth they were doing with me – I clearly stuck myself in last on the group (LOL)

As I felt totally out of the day – felt there would definitely be scores in the 40 pts – I started hitting all sorts of experimental shots – slices, draws , punches. Just having fun. But rather bizarrely I pulled them all off. I had a good laugh at it all.

Little did I know that people were struggling , with the sand/grit , the longer tees , no roll and difficult to judge greens. It wasn’t a high scoring day at all.

So a long day , good laugh , some good golf , company , food . A course I would love , slight changes in direction and elevation all day. A real old world feel , links feel. Would be some place in June.

That has to be one of the longest days ever. Some commitment by all involved and all the players.

Hopefully catch all again next month.

    Fix.

First outing of the year under the belt. Id like to give a thanks to the lads @tigerwood1 @boccy23 and @bobster453 for a great day out. I know it was a long round but we managed to have a good laugh the full way through.

There was some very steady golf played between everyone in the group. @tigerwood1 started off really well. He was hitting some great shots from tee to green, considering he hasnt managed to play a whole lot in the past few months. Its always a pleasure to play with him.

@boccy23 first time playing with brian. He was really steady off the tee. Very nice tempo with the driver. I wish i had his fairway wood game as he hit some cracking shots off the deck during the round. Getting on to the putting, he has starting to try out Aim Point. I think he said he has only used it a few times but you can see it is working. Once he has it dialed in, they should be dropping in left right and centre as they were skimming the hole every time.

    Last but not least, @bobster453

Again, first time playing with him but i had a great laugh with him during the round. Off the tee, the driver wasnt going well for him at the start. There was a few apologies being said over the course of the first few holes but he had enough of talking to the other groups and wanted to start talking with his own😂 He stepped up on the tee with his driver and had mini conversation with himself over the ball then, BOOM. Managed to stripe one straight down the middle and get that going then for the rest of the day.

All and all, it was a long but enjoyable day. I hope to see yous all at the next one.

Good fun playing with @Kiith @kev_s88 and @weapon of grass destruction . Good chat and fun the whole round.

I didn't really enjoy the course, the gravel on the fairways was strange and the slow play was aggravating. We finished the last 3 holes in the dark. If Portumna comes up again in the rota I will probably skip it. My play was absolutely awful, but I won't blame that on anything but myself.

Really looking forward to Rathsallagh, I have only played there once but really enjoyed my round there.

After missing round 1 in Portmarnock, I was delighted to get my year going in Portumna. My day started off bright and early (although not quite as early as fix) as I picked up @BigChap1759 around 9. Knowing there was a bit of a delay due to the frost, we stopped for a bite to eat in a nice little cafe in the town before hitting the course. Great catching up with everyone around the first tee box and on the practice putting green. Hit quite a lot of putts up and down that practice green to try and adjust to the speed and it definitely paid off during the round.

I played with @Golfgraffix, @spacecoyote and birthday boy @Break80, all of who I know for long time now and I really enjoyed it, some good laughs. It was slow, but I was kindof expecting it and I didn't let it bother me much. All of us hit some great shots, @spacecoyote in particular hit a couple of savage approach shots from distance (hybrid on the 7th I think was the days hightlight to setup a birdie on a low index hole). The three lads were all a bit unlucky not to have a few more points and been right in the mix.

I had a bit of an up and down front 9, 3 three pointers , 3 1 pointers and a scratch to turn with 16 points - definitely felt I'd left a few behind me, mostly due to the pace of what I thought were exceptional greens. I did bird the 2nd so that had already made my day! Started the back 9 with a par followed by a bad bogey (from 140 yd.s out following a great drive) I then went on a run of really nice golf. Finished the back 9 with 8 pars and most of them were relatively easy finishes, 19 back for a very pleasing 35pts total (a 78).

The fairways were a bit strange, very like ballyneety last year. I can only assume its to try and improve drainage over time. Generally, I found enough grass to place my ball on and it didn't seem to hurt my strike too much, although there were definitely a few odd shots that may have been a result of the condition (or just me blaming them…)! Overall, I think it's a lovely layout with some really special holes (par 5 17th and par 3 18th are two fantastic finishing holes) and the greens were super; I'd guess it's a great course to play in the height of the summer. Thanks @Kiith and all on the committee, roll on Rathsallagh next month.

Just home after a lot of mileage and great craic.

Some photos of the day first and post round analysis will follow.

One of my favourite courses to play from the work society and it was mentioned on a discussion at Captains weekend in Killarney as a possible venue, hopefully it will be considered again in the future and in the summer months.

Thanks a million again to captain @Kiith for another enjoyable outing and the committee for another excellent organising of the day out.

Apologies that I wasn't staying afterwards as I had a long spin ahead to Carlow.

Pulled into the trees on the left, duff it barely on to the green, terrible putt uphill, misread matched with a push and it goes in the hole for a textbook bogey.

Back in 2014...it was my longest golf day, return in 2025 to another long day.

Everything conspired against us to be fair, frost delayed start, a massive GAA society out in front of us, was going to be an uphill battle.

I played pretty poor most of the day, with some moments of my best struck shots.

Driver was poor, irons were poor, chipping was 90% terrible, putted OK, bit didn't adjust to the slowdown as the light and temp dropped and left a bunch on the way in 6 inches short and online. Outside of that the rest was great 🤣🤣🤣

I probably hit 5 or 6 shots all day that I was genuinely happy with, other than that I'd be struggling.

Great company for the round, with plenty of friendly slagging between 4 good friends. That's the joy of the boards society, to have joined a gang of nuts from the Internet and found some real mates.

@Alanm just superbly consistent. Adding the new driver has added a further dimension to his game, which already had every other facet in place. Sub 70 golf and + handicap has to be back on the table.

@Golfgraffix was always a quality golfer, but has upped his consistency. Didn't have his best game...and a hint of angry GG crept in, but his putting game keeps him in any round of golf

@Break80 the birthday man, was steady throughout. A couple of points left on the board with the short game, which was strange for him. But adjusting to a new set of clubs, wedges included, are a valid excuse. Took the money off benny, which always puts a smile onhis face.

We had a confluence of events work against us yesterday, the return of a winter frost, 2 societies on a course on the same day. Portumna is a cracking course though, great mix of holes. A good solid test from the whites in wintry conditions.

I can understand people's frustrations given the way the day played out, but unfortunately circumstance conspired against us.

    20250315_140540.jpg

Just the one photo from yesterday, great par 3, the 5th I think.

quite enjoyed the course myself. but never seen one where they had recently gravelled the fairways before 🤣

good layout, some great holes but shame about the conditioning and having to play the last 3 holes in basically the dark was a tad annoying.

played with @BigChap1759 @spuddy4711 & @ClubGuy . I've known @BigChap1759 for a fair few years now and we were having our own little side match from the winter matchplay on the day. It was my first time playing with the other 2 fellas though. we all had our moments on the day with some nice strikes but unfortunately to much bad stuff. I think the slow pace was getting to us and it didn't help trying to keep warm when it was all stop and start.

the slow play was because there was a large GAA society out ahead of us and we could see on a number of occasions that they were clearly not all golfers 🤦‍♂️

my two highlights of the day turned out to be worthless….. Long Drive, I was less than 2 foot away from the marker and so on line with it, there was certainly a possibility that I hit it and rebounded back 😫

last hole in the dark, wanted to hit a 7 iron judging on the distance, but the ball was defiantly not going as far in the cold air so I choked down slightly on a 6 iron. I hit it sweetly and knew it was in the general direction but I thought that it could be slightly left. well when I got up there it was left alright, 6 foot left of the hole 😁. unscrew the cap on the name sheet to find that @FixdePitchmark had the NP sewn up since the first group passed through. well done Fix, that was some shot. Of course I then missed the 2…. It was a difficult moving putt on the best of days, but in the dark it was near impossible. the only saving grace for me was the par closed out a narrow victory against Big Chap.

I couldn't get to grips with the greens all day. I think I had 5 3putts, and a 4putt. 40 putts in the round was the difference between and decent showing and a bang average one

well done to @Alanm for another great round of golf and I'm looking forward to playing him in in my next matchplay game 😎 and of course well done to all the other prize winners and captain @Kiith for the organising

Some cut losing 75 % of your handicap for 35 pts , because a few lads couldn't handle white tees 🤣, .

    Great win Alanm

Great day out, when I saw low temps and a possible delayed start I went with the attitude that the day would be slow…very slow, so I wasn't disappointed ! I was out with 3 gents in @token56 @bakerbhoy and @shefellover93, we made the most of the beautiful scenery and a course carved into the landscape of mature trees, a real golfers test. A pity the fairways were difficult but most courses are this time of yr. I think we all said we'd love to go back which is always a compliment to the course and the people that maintain it. Looking forward to Rathsallagh, I was a member there 20yrs ago so hoping that helps improve my scoring !

Oiche Mhaith agus Lá fhéile Phàdraig golfers. Hope you all had a good bank holiday.

All roads and early roads led to Portumna for Round 2 of the Boards Golf Society. Portumna is a gem of a course and 1 I always looked forward to it from the work society and this would have been my 4th time playing it. On the road after collecting my playing partner @get2thechoppa in Clonmel and on the road just after 9:30. Not a bad spin up, we took a slight little re-route into a great little village for some really tasty breakfast and even some of their own made Dubai chocolate 👌👌👌.

When we got into the car park we were chatting to other boards golfers and we found out that due to some earlier frost it was going to be a delay of up to 1 hour. This gave enough time to get some practice putts in and I found that this green was very pacy, slight touches and the golf ball rolling passed the cup by at least 10 - 15 feet, this was similar on the main greens, the course was in great nick for this time of year but the pin positions were very tricky and putting was the bullet in the foot for my game on Saturday. With the delay and with super sunshine, I had to buy a new hat. I also got some further practice on the range, hitting some 52° and 8 irons and they felt fine, I was carrying a slight injury with sciatica in my lower back, but I had a heat pad applied and thankfully there was no further injury.

After some shots in the range it was back up to the practice green, a few more putts and chatting to some more fellow golfers and to some new members. My other fellow players Saturday were @ciano15 , great to catch up with him again as I played with him last along with @scotty_golf9 and @bakerbhoy at Captains at Mount Juliet, when @ciano15 makes connection on the ball with his driver or irons, he can hit it miles, there were some sweet shots with his irons on 2nd shots, a gentleman and great craic throughout the round.

As the groups started teeing off and it came near to us, Ciano and I looked for a new member of the boards society, @rogermelliethemanofthetelly, as I read the name of the scorecard, Roger reached out his hand to shake hands and introduced himself. Roger is only new to the game of golf and a very good place to be, you'll pick up so much experience and pointers from so many great people in this group. Had a great chat with Roger on the course and we had a lot in common in regards to similar careers and other interests. A tough one on the course Saturday, but always had a smile on every fairway and every tee box.

The last of our 4 ball was my passenger and partner in crime @get2thechoppa , @get2thechoppa got his Gui membership renewed last week and his proper handicap back also. His game is coming back the more he plays and he was hitting very well off the tee, so good I read later yesterday that he won the Long Drive, it was a great tee shot and I think we all saw it hit the marker and land after it. Some putts didn't go the way on the day, but onwards and upwards.

Thanks to the 3 lads for great chats and company on the round 👍👍👍

I went out again with the same mindset as I played Portmarnock, I was enjoying my golf but I left some shots out there. Off the tee very happy and I was on the green on every par 3 only to have inconsistencies with the putter. It came right with a long par save on the 15th. A respectful 31 points on a very long course I was well happy with.

As mentioned earlier, Portumna is one of my favourite courses, it was a long round on Saturday as we had some bottlenecks on tee boxes with another society ahead of us and nearly 5 hours for our rounds, coming in on the last hole it was getting hard to see the ball flight from our tee shots. Other than that, I really enjoyed the outing and I hope that Portumna is considered again in the future and possibly played in the summer months.

Many thanks as always again to captain @Kiith and the ever hardworking committee for organising another great outing.

Looking forward to Rathsallagh in April another new course for me. All the best folks.

Another enjoyable outing and a long, long day on Saturday.

I really enjoyed the course, I think it would be absolutely class (and brutal) in summer when the trees have leaves. The trees really do narrow the fairways considerably on many holes, as well as some strategically placed trees on the fairways themselves forcing certain shot shapes.

The only two things I did not like was the gravel on the fairways and the very inconsistent greens. The gravel was a bit odd, I've never played on a graveled fairway before, and some of the greens were lightning and some were slow.

My own game was a tale of two halves, front 9 I only managed 10 points but then found some rhythm to get 18 points on the back 9. I think the lack of a warm up played a part, Portumna would really benefit from some nets.

I went round with @FixdePitchmark , @a post punk and @Sorbet. Great bunch of lads, it was a good job we all got on since it took so long getting round! Fix was solid the whole way around, cracking ball striking, great off the tee. Beautiful tee shot on 18 for NTP, first man to tee off on the day had it sewn up! I said to fix when signing the cards that his 34 points would be in contention, I just felt the gravel fairways and inconsistent greens would catch people out and it looks like it did.

Sorbet played well overall but some inconsistent holes cost him. Post Punk just never got going off the tee, bringing brand new clubs out for the very first time for a society outing was brave, shame about the gravel fairways and the shiny new irons!

The round was seriously slow. We were the first group and we were up the arse of the group in front of us the whole way round and they never got the hint they needed to hurry up. They were unbelievably slow. Flag in, flag out, flag in again, reading 2 feet putts, taking 3 practice swings on the tee box before hitting the ball 10 yards.

I actually don't think they were part of the GAA society ahead of us, I think the group immediately in front just arrived by themselves before we teed off. They lost ground on the society ahead, I don't think they were waiting at any point.

Brilliant shooting by @Alanm , 35 points playing off 4 at a new course is serious golf, well done!

Apologies that I had to sprint off after the round finished, unfortunately a 5.5 hour round meant I had no time for food.

I dunno about anyone else but the soles of my feet were killing me after Saturday. I wore my spiked shoes which have never given me issues before, I think it must have been the gravel.

Thanks again all for a great day out and thanks again to captain @Kiith for a great course selection!

    Looking forward to Rathsallagh.

Arra now dont be blaming people in front for yer slow play, held up the whole place yez did.

Ironic given the tendency of some in your group to wax lyrical about slow play

    🤣🤣🤣🥄🥄🥄💩

I rarely post but I have to say it was a feckin disgrace how slow that round of golf (I loosely use that term given my performance 🤣) was. We were waiting on every hole for the entire round and there was definitely ground lost by a number of groups throughout the day. What was very poor in my opinion was the club itself after knowingly taking the large society numbers on the day did not from what I can see take any responsibility 😠 to have a presence out on the course to gently nudge any groups falling behind to get a move on. Its a lovely track which unfortunately was not in its best condition but it could have been Augusta like and it still would have left a bad taste in the mouth given the 5hrs 30mins round that most people endured. Thankfully it rarely happens but its the first time that I was considering walking off the course as the shite golf, cold and waiting around tested my will.

Congrats to the players in the Winners circle and also thanks to the ever hard working Captain and his committee for the organization on the day. Onward and upwards to better times at Rathsallagh.
