I liked tonight's finished house. Only bit I wasn't sure of was the kitchen. We didn't get a proper look at it but it seemed small and poorly connected to the dining area. All the living areas appeared small but cosy.

For a big house it felt a bit claustrophobic inside for some reason.might have been the busy wallpaper.

The work was beautiful and it finished really well. Thought the exterior structure is the house was impressive.

Lovely house! Some of the interior finishes (wallpaper especially) wouldn't be for me , but I'm not living there 😂

I think the attic room was always on the cards as the velux windows were put in with the slates. Completely makes sense.

I would love to see the garden in 5-10 years when all the planting is established. Looked fab but he's a landscaper so not unexpected.

I thought they may have tried to get the roof on the barn , while they had a roofer there and get it more weather sealed.

Fair play to them, a lovely family.

Excellent program the thing about Hugh Wallace verses Dermot Bannon it's age.

Hugh Wallace is from an era where work for architects was hard come by and the architect did what the clients wanted not what the architects vision was his manor while friendly is professional.

On the other hand Dermot Bannon is a product of an Ireland with lots of money.

I think they’re a lovely family who deserve a really nice place to live & they have achieved that. Their work ethic alone is admirable.

Did they make decisions that I may not have? Of course.

Did I love everything they chose to do? Not really.

Does it matter what I think? Not one jot.

Someone mentioned a bit of disappointment with the kitchen but I think it’s going to work very well when it’s moved/extended into the barn & has amazing views for sitting & dining while the barn also opens onto a covered bbq & entertaining area to make full use of the beautiful patio. Or at least that’s what I might choose to do!

so frustrating that they dont show us the final layout

Your man is clearly a savage worker. Great credit must go to him. Nice family. Hope they’re happy there.

Thats exactly what I would do - have a large kitchen/living/dining in the barn down the line. The kitchen they have now is fine for the moment - I doubt the kitchen will be the same in 5 years time though. It's a house I would love to see a revisit episode in a few years. I think eventually that house will be stunning.

I'd have very different taste to the couple in regards to the interior decoration but the actual renovation work was excellent. One of the few examples of this where the end price doesn't seem crazy for what they got at the end too, the husband was clearly an absolute trojan worker on this one!

Lovely family and a lovely house. They seemed very happy with the end result.

Would have like to have seen a bit more detail of the last 20% of the job. Similar to Dermot Bannon , the last 30% of the show (the bit after the ads at the end ) skips forward alot from when the ad break starts.

My granny grew up in the house from the most recent episode. Had never been to it myself, great to learn a bit of the history. They did it proud to be fair…although I'd question some of the wallpaper!😅 That chap has some work ethic.

Whilst I do enjoy the show, is the cynic in me wondering if some of the people are using it as a partial advert/ showcase for their businesses ?
So far this series we have had a pair of architects, a carpenter, a landscaper, and a businesswoman with a restaurant and Airbnb business. There was also an artist.

On the other hand with these type of projects you would need some building background to take it on, or otherwise the costs would be too high.

Its a very entertaining series, and Hugh has a good sense of humour and self deprecation unlike another tv architect.

It’s not a fair comparison, Hugh isn’t the architect for the houses on GHR.

To take on large projects like this it helps to know about diy and the building trade and to have at least 200k to spend. This is not a project for the average office worker on the average wage .Hugh is more easy going he's there to act as a guide for the viewer . It's nice to see old buildings upgraded and used as a living space for a family . I much prefer this to grand designs where they seem too have an unlimited budget .

I think the Airbnb one, yes maybe. I definitely felt cheated when it wasn't going to be her home.

    The rest no.

I don't think you'd take on a project like this without having a strong diy skillset access to mates rates also a bonus, or a massive budget.

I genuinely feared for the carpenters health with the amount of hours he was doing. The dude last night did trojan hours too but seemed more chilled. If they billed themselves for the hours put in, the budget would at least double.

Plus there was no real still frames of their vans , advertising their contact details

He was such a great worker wouldn't have any doubt about his ability to get job done if hired as landscaper, it really showed how the landscaping makes a big difference

I'm enjoying this programme first year watching it, I'm my opinion much better watch than room to improve

I read a post on another site saying the work on the barn has started. It would be lovely to see the finished house and barn.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,608 ✭✭✭thereiver

Of course you can save a lot of money if you are a carpenter working on an old house and have the time to do the work

Indo picks up on the airbnb angle

    https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/the-great-house-rental-showhomes-from-rte-programmes-are-being-let-for-thousands-of-euro-a-week-on-airbnb/a517688310.html

In 2022, before the property was restored, Ms McNamara told the Irish Farmers Journal she planned to turn it into “a super-exclusive rental for a week at a time”.

So RTE conniving in misguiding the viewer.

no mention of that of the show, she didnt respond to request for comment.

Great episode I loved the old fashioned design and colors it's nice to see someone investing in an old house in a small town

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,608 ✭✭✭thereiver

if someone spends 400k to buy an old house and upgrade it and they want to rent it out that's ok .We have 1000s of old houses that are empty . I,m not why people appear in this program apart from they get a bit of advice from the presenter . That was nice how his sister came back from Australia to see the new house .
