Buy it now, unless you want to face Retr0's wrath 😉

Hearing a lot of excited early buzz about Blue Prince, with whispers of ‘Outer Wilds’ among those who’ve played it. Seems to be with reviewers already too (a month early) which is hopefully a sign of confidence.

Serious rush of good indie games on the way over the next two months though, same as this time last year.

Sounds like one to bid on in the Fantasy League! :pac:

I've seen Obra Dinn mentioned as a reference by people who've played it as well. Well excited for it.

Hints of outer wilds and obra dinn, can't go throwing references around like that willy nilly, itching for another game like those.

Speaking about X-Com alternatives... I've been playing King Arthur: Knights Tale the last few days and it is brilliant.

Similar to X-Com in many ways, with a large roster of characters from Arthurian legend that you can recruit, level up, and equip. The characters can die if you're not careful.

There's a 'base building' element where you spend resources to fix up Camelot for various character support options, such as healing, training, material/ item purchasing, giving laws and decrees etc.

There seem to be some online elements I haven't tried, as well as various skirmish modes I also haven't tried. The main campaign seems very weighty indeed. I am absolutely loving it for the TBS and rpg aspects and as a massive fan of Arthurian legend and knights in general. Brilliant game, I'm obsessed.

    It's out Spring 2025 on PS5. Checks watch, we're in Spring 25!!!

It’s April 10th btw! The fact that some who’ve played it are already raving about it (Jason Schreier and Austin Walker are all over it, and a few other lesser known ones I’ve also seen bigging it up) a month in advance is an encouraging sign.

Nice, it's mad, when i first saw outer wilds and obra dinn, i was like what's so special about these? But they just have a magical formula so any mention that a new game will have hints of one or both, it's instantly on my radar. And it's one of those things where you want to go into a game like this as blind as possible. So, any respectable viewer that says to get this, I'll be buying day 1.

I read on the psn item page, the house resets every day only keeping permanent upgrades you've found. I wonder what the time limit is on the reset. I know people complained about the 20 minute reset in Outer Wilds but it was actually genius.

Playing through BG3 again. I want to recruit Minthara this time but I just can't be that evil plus I think you lose Karlach if you do.

There is the workaround where you get her at Moonrise Tower but I feel like that is too far into the game to be recruiting new people. I barely used Jaheira and never used Minsc in my first playthrough because they were Johnny-come-latelys to the gang.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,539 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah I rarely used Minthara, Jaheira or Minsc because of how late they come into the game. Jaheira a few times just for some story-related quests (like getting Minsc, or the attack on the Harpers hideout), but other than that I pretty much already have my team and abilities set up the way I like them. Also never use Halsin but that's just because he's useless.

That said, I do still recruit Minthara (well, didn't on first playthrough but that's because I didn't know who she was) just because I like her character. It's worth talking to her at camp and maybe taking her on a few small quests or busywork in Act 3. She's a pretty good laugh.

Yeah, never used Halsin either actually. I just didn't like him.

I might actually use the workaround for Minthara. There is a lot to do when you reach Baldur's Gate. She'll get some use and I'm a rogue this time so I won't always be bringing Astarion for stealth and lockpicking.

Went to bid on it there.... Ya bollix! I know you got stuck with football manager but you have some high scoring games already, this sounds like it's gonna get you a nice few points more.

I'm hopeful of avoiding the wooden spoon this year anyway!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 892 ✭✭✭timetogo1

Yeah. I played It Takes Two a couple of years ago with my daughter. Was waiting for this. We're enjoying it. Similar gameplay to It Takes Two.

Maybe this is a bit easier (so far). Every level is very different than the one before. Well worth getting anyway and a bit surreal in some places.

Since I've been playing a wizardry game I've been looking up historical stuff about the series. It might well be one of the most influential game series ever made with stuff it pioneered in pretty much every game you've played.

But the weirdest thing is how the western and Japanese viewed the series. This more than likely contributed to all the dark fantasy we see in Japanese culture, stuff like Dark Souls and Berserk.

In the West the game takes after D&D. The first few games in the series are incredibly difficult and you are pretty much expected to lose party members permanently. Like in D&D you rip up the character sheet and roll a new character and get on with it. As a result there's a whimsical silliness to the game that carried over into later games and perfectly illustrated by the manual.

There's some really nasty stuff in the game, enemies that instantly kill you. A chance of permadeath when you revive characters, and a teleport spell that can randomly go wrong and teleport your party into a brick wall and party KO you. Also if you die you can only get your equipment back by reaching that spot in the dungeon with a new party. Sound familiar? You're meant to just roll with this stuff and treat the game more like a rogue like

In Japan it was different. When the japanese first got their hands on the game first it was likely through pirate copies and any text they weren't able to read. The game became massively popular in Japan. However without the context of D&D or the manual, what they perceived was a massively bleak and unforgiving game. A traversal into a dungeon where traps were cruel and every enemy encounter had the potential to be lethal. An atmosphere of bleak desolation was probably exasperated by the primitive graphics of white lines and text on a solid black background. The japanese found it kind of scary despite most of he enemies being puns or jokes.

When the official releases of the game came out, they were marketed with this in mind with some wonderful dark fantasy artwork which has persisted to this day. The series died in the west but the series continued in Japan with bleak dark fantasy settings and stories. This more than likely inspired a lot of manga writers, light novelists and game devs.

I read all that, and was kinda wondering through it why you didn't tell us the name of the game, only the genre.....

Only when I saw the pictures that I clocked..... I'm having a slow day.

Man I'm definitely in a bit of a lull. Bought plenty of games recently and just can't bring myself to play them. Only did the first mission or two in MH Wilds in the few days after release, and then left the game for a week. Tried to bring myself to play it last night, spent 5 minutes in the hub area, and realised I just don't want to play it. Part of me thinks it's still my Tekken obsession, because I play about an hour of it after work, and then just don't want to play anything.

I almost fancy trying Death Stranding again. Only made it halfway through the game the first time. I think at least I could probably burst through the first bit of the game, and then when it gets to Chapter 3 and you have more freedom, it's something I could tip about with on the Portal while watching TV.

Sorry, completely missed this @Grumpypants . Yupp, played WotC and it did actually feel like a new game. I remember getting my ass kicked at one of the chosen bosses and went onto a new game, will definitely have to go back to it as it's the closest thing I'm looking for really.

Maaaaann you should try Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. I was in a lull as well and that dragged me all the way out of it, it's so good.

Take a break, honestly after a week you'll feel better about playing games.

I find starting a new modern game can be an awful slog as well as you have to dedicate a couple of hours to get through a tutorial before the game lets you have some fun.

Just before I lose my days to Assassin's Creed Shadows (I bit), I finished off Yoku's Island Express which was a delightful pinball platformer adventure game. Would highly recommend it if you're looking for something a bit different, low stress with a funky playful story. I picked it up for €4 on sale (it's still on sale) and its well worth it. The whole island has little pods of pinball tables (that aren't tables) and platforming in-between. Highly recommend it.

The more I see of Atomfall, the more impressed I am. Out next week and 55 quid in Smyths, it's very tempting. Devs have a video explaining difficulty settings and I really like the sound of how they're handling exploration.

    Cheerful 2D platformer time.

The Z dimension, especially in open world games can get exhausting.

Playing a few worlds of Rescue Mission used to snap me out of this. Damn I miss that game.

Some of the changes they seem to be announcing for Tekken 8 Season 2 may really be the thing that makes me stop playing. It seemed they were going to make defence more of a priority in order to balance the game, and now they're revealing some of the new moves or power-ups some characters will not get, and it's going to turn the game into even more of a 50/50 mixup, get hit by everything no matter what you do, get hit once and you may as well go for a coffee because your opponent will have a 5-minute combo off it.

Either that or I need to start learning a new character. Every character has some type of bullsh*t in their arsenal, but some characters have better or multiple bullsh*ts compared to Hwoarang that he's just fallen so far behind now. In the Tekken Talk last night, not only did they show some of the buffs coming to numerous characters who are already really overpowered, they used Hwoarang to specifically show a nerf that will relate to all characters (but which Hwoarang usually benefits the most from).
