Hotmail account hacked?

Just wondering, I have received an e-mail with my name and e-mail address to my own hotmail account stating that my account has been hacked, along with some other threatening words. It even bears my own e-mail address as the sender.

However in the sent folder there is no indication that it has been sent from my account.

What kind of scam is this? Has anybody encountered this as well? Has my hotmail account really been hacked and somebody is sending messages in my name? - As there isn't anything in the send folder, there is no indication it has been sent from my account, unless somebody deleted that?

It's an old and well known scam. They just scrape emails and passwords from various leaks and spam them in the hopes of catching a few that haven't changed their passwords.

SMTP (email) is just a text based protocol with no real verification. Someone sent you a mail and made the from field with your email address, this is an easy thing to do.

Your email has not been hacked , they are trying to fool you into thinking it has so you click on links / ring for support.

Any idea why, lots of people, not jusst me, can't log into outlook mail? Say wrongs password has been used too many times, when in fact everyone with this issue, including me, knows the password is not wrong.

I used to constantly get this. It maybe that bots are continuously trying to login with the wrong information (ie: your email, but with a password which was leak from another website), and so Microsoft block all logins. You should be able to bypass this via your backup email or two-factor authentication and reset your password.
