The scary thing is that when inflation gets worse and tariffs have people struggling more he'll just get more angry and blame other countries and the democrats for their woes and his followers will lap it up and who knows what the hell will happen. A declaration of war on someone probably.

The economy is already contracting and Fox news etc just keep calling it Biden's economy or that some hardship will be required while Trump steadies the ship.

I can't get over the fact that the American fools voted this clown in and MM has to go next week. Wouldn't be surprised if Vance starts shouting at him about hate speech laws and being pro Hamas. Ugh.

I read somewhere that via the consumption of US cultural products such as TV, music, etc.. that US colonised our conscience, and we reflected back those influences like the Rattle and Hum album by U2 which really was a cultural tribute album. But now I can't help but feel the blunt ugliness of the MAGA lunacy is a malignant and repulsive force makes the US an unattractive destination for Irish people, unless you're a Andrew Tate loving cage fighter.

Also the upcoming World Cup and then Olympics in the USA may become fraught affairs if Trump continues as he has started. Actual proven collaboration with Russia against Ukraine, or with Zionists to genocide Gaza, or a follow through with the threat to seize Greenland or the Panama canal by force will I imagine lead to boycotts of these global tournaments.

I know not all US citizens voted for him, but the fact that a sizable portion of the US population saw his first term race baiting and wanted more tells me that even if Trump died of a heart attack in the loving arms of his followers at one of his rallies they would still want more of the divisiveness that he fed off.

Even if he's a dim idiot tiptoeing into senility he's still a dangerous idiot, and his followers lap that up.

I lived and worked in the USA when there wasn't work here in the late 80s, went back on a few driving holidays, visited relatives (some unfortunately are MAGA nuts), but I'll never go back now, and even after he's dead those who believe in the chaos he creates will still be a force.

    Thoughts?

The world cup could be a disaster for attendances with all this going on. How will ICE with their new mandate cope with 100s of 1000s of South Americans trying to visit? They've had a German girl in custody for a month now who had a valid visa and no one knows what's happening with her.

No chance of ireland qualifying but I certainly wouldn't visit in this climate.

WASHINGTON, March 6 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump's administration is planning to revoke temporary legal status for some 240,000 Ukrainians who fled the conflict with Russia, a senior Trump official and three sources familiar with the matter said, potentially putting them on a fast-track to deportation. The move, expected as soon as April, would be a stunning reversal of the welcome Ukrainians received under President Joe Biden's administration.

With trade wars looming on the horizon there is definitely a risk of the rest of the world trying to rid themselves of American goods where possible.

If Trump continues his anti EU rhetoric I wouldn't be shocked to see consumption of US goods fall in a lot of Europe as a result, and a general shunning of the US, especially as they are unilaterally pulling their defence resources out of Europe, which previously would have been their biggest influence.

Once there's no more reliance on US military then Europeans may take a harder line against the US. Or against Trump at least.

ICE detained a US military veteran in New Jersey who was from Puerto Rico and even had his Veterans card on him.

Gianni Infantini is Trump's buddy so I'm surprised they haven't reinstated Russia into FIFA etc already

I believe instead of giving all 3 host countries a bye to the tournament they will give USA and Russia one each and Canada and Mexico have to play off for the last one.

Trump froze the immigration benefits the refugees were getting on 19th Feb and ended the humanitarian parole for Ukrainians, Afghanis and six other nationalities as well. The Parole is a presidential tool for use when refugees need a home to allow them stay temporarily in the US. Some of the Afghanis worked with the US military in Afghanistan.

Oh God spare us this "art of the deal" nonsense. The US is the most powerful country on the planet and much of that has been down to their ability to form economic and strategic alliances across the world. They have literally spent nigh on a century wielding conciliation, deal-making, investment and — yes — aggression in order to position themselves as the global hegemon. Trump comes along, takes what has been built, uses it as a bullying battering ram and acts like he has invented political dealmaking.

His amazing technique? He sets the bar high at some ridiculous standard in the hope of getting the lower bar result he truly craves? A tactic so genius and innovative that it has only been used by door-to-door salesmen for decades on end. Then again, it's very much on brand for Trump to inherit something and act like he earned it through his great prowess.

If it was as easy as this, why don't people do this all the time? Why isn't commerce totally founded on the idea that you just act as outlandishly as possible and the weaker parties will just give you what you want every time? Because eventually either your bluff gets called or your business partners gradually recoil from you because you can't be trusted to act professionally or responsibly, or to not use what you provide as a means of extortion.

So Donald has now demonstrated to the Europeans and the West that the US is not the solid, dependable ally and partner they thought it was and they must now be wary that the Americans will use their economic partnership as a weapon against them — thus precipitating an entire re-think of the position of the US as their leading light. Meanwhile, the Chinese, who apparently this talented and prescient US administration is pursuing an extravagantly complex and nuanced master plan against, continue to quietly spread their economic influence globally.

The art of the deal — take what you can squeeze, burn bridges in the process, then lament the fact the bridge isn't there when you come back.

Solo Avital, the US based maker of the Gaza Riviera video used by Trump to portray an image of what Trump Gaza would look like, has said he made the video as satire while experimenting with AI in early Feb and it was posted without our consent or knowledge. “We are storytellers, we’re not provocateurs, we sometimes do satire pieces such as this one was supposed to be,” he told the Guardian.

You are underestimating the election's result impact. Trump proved that nothing he does or says will have any real impact on the voters. Even more concerning is that the GOP did so well. That means that not only are people happy to vote for Trump, but they are also happy to vote for the GOP.

So, while you might be right on your points, or not, Trump and the GOP know that in the heat of an election, people will find some way to vote for Trump and the GOP.

America had a pretty clear choice last year. They chose not only Trump but also to ensure Trump had both the House and Senate, and with SCOTUS, that meant complete, unquestionable power. Whatever person the Dems put it, the fundamentals won't change. Fox News will help Trump and the GOP lie and paint whoever it is as a Marxist, fascist, socialist, nut job who wants to turn your kids gay, force sex change operations on them and take away your guns.

On top of that, the Democratic candidate will be too young, too old, too white, black, a woman, once went to a Taylor Swift concert, doesn't eat meat, doesn't have kids, has too many kids, laugh weird or simply hasn't ever been POTUS before and thus lacks experience.

The last election proved that millions of voters are willing to make up whatever reason to excude themselves into voting for Trump and the GOP, purely on the basis that they hope something will done to deal with those 'others'. The people causing all their problems.

The Democrats need to choose their next leader now.

Get he or she out on the campaign trail, holding rallies, town halls, blanket the media. Go to all 50 states multiples of times.

At every opportunity calling out Trump and his Ghouls for the lunacy of their administration. Highlighting every single negative aspect and how it effects voters.

And above all else, go low not high.

But they won't, right now they seem to be in a strop frozen by what in some ways they let happen.

1000s of federal workers have been fired across various different departments since Trump took office. I don't know if federal workers are more likely to vote democrat or GOP but presumably a sizable chunk of them voted for Trump. The Trump voters have only themselves to blame for losing their jobs.

They won't because they aren't about to have Presidential primaries three and a half years before an election.

They don't need to. They just need to have right person available to sail through them and continue the momentum.

Who knows maybe that person picks the Democratic Party and not the only way around.

    But something has to change.

Right now the Democrats are frozen in the headlights and are getting weaker by the day.

Putting a "fait accompli" candidate into the Primaries has not exactly worked wonders for them in the past.

They need everyone to step up, and the leaders there now like Jeffries need to get a lot better. But you're not going to get a presumptive presidential nominee.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭rossie1977

Schumer and Jeffries need to go first and foremost. Much too weak and much too centrist. While Jeffries has done a good job getting Dem house behind him he comes across weaker than a newborn kitten. Pelosi would eat him for breakfast.

Schumer needs to retire and let AOC take his senate seat while Shontel Brown should be Dem leader in the house. Fight fire with fire

Well, she did say she'd rather be pretty, than smart. Mission accomplished more or less (if you like that nasty type.)

And, as CFTrump's lawyer, she's done a disastrous job (E. Jean got a lot more money because she couldn't control the Orange smegmite.)

Interesting, a bit of dissent from the usually compliant SCOTUS, much to MAGA's chagrin. So, overall, you know it was a good thing. Alito is gone around the bend yet again, too, what a senile old fool

4 SC Justices decided Trump can ignore Congress completely and do whatever he feels like is another somewhat more worrying interpretation of that though.
