Very simple for me, at this moment in time , we are a selling club, and until we sort out our current financial predicament, we’ll remain that way.

Offer Mainoo what we think we can afford, if he doesn’t take it, put him up for sale. The offer should be non negotiable.

It’s very, very simple, and shouldn’t warrant a billion clicks and chatter.

The club need to be absolutely clear on this.

This may be an unpopular opinion but I hope we don’t have any European football next season. This team just can’t deal with the rigour of a European campaign while the squad is so thin. Realistically, we are getting 3 maybe 4 players this summer regardless of whether we have European football or not. That’s just about enough for us to manage a league campaign and even then probably not as we’ve so many sick notes in the team on top money.

Agreed, feels like the being able to operate with a lighter squad and spend more time working on tactics would overall be more beneficial than some money to spend on one or two players.

Be careful what you wish for. A lack of European football really cuts down the list of decent players willing to come, especially young talent. Do it for the club does not apply to someone trying to further their career. You may be able to get them, get good use and flip them for profit and then continue the cycle. That's if you believe Utd to be a selling club for the next while.

Yep and then not qualify for anything next season too and solidify the mid table position. Are these the standards that are acceptable now?

Football is about competing and aiming as high as you can. United have spent more than anyone in the world the last 10 years. There's no excuse for where they are.

Does it though? I can understand that line of thinking but we are so far off competing at that level I’m not sure those types of players are who we are worried about attracting.

of course they aren’t acceptable standards but reality has to trump ideals at some stage. The team and squad are miles away from where it needs to be. It’s paper thin and we are not able to name a full bench this past month. I’d love to think we could compete on all fronts and start winning the league again but we are in the middle of a hard reset right now.

I'm 50/50 on it, on 1 hand we need the money, on the 2nd less games will help the team recover and more time to train.

On a side note I don't want players joining us just for Europe, I want players who have ambitions to bring us back to the top through hard work and grit.

I think the lack of Europe might mean we get one player less in the summer but right now we just can't compete in multiple competitions with how poor the squad is.

Muppetiers lad saying Quenda is nailed on and agreed, I assume from his source. His own personal opinion is that we're waiting until he is 18 to announce it.

It will be carnage in here in summer when we won't sign top players.

After a decade of harm we are going pay a price short term.

I think long term this could be a blessing depends how we go about it

Imo any realistic Utd fans know that we won't have the funds this Summer to buy any top tier players, save maybe getting a class striker like Osimhen (with either Zirkzee or Rasmus) going the other way as a makeweight.

That picture could change dramatically if either Garnacho or Mainoo (or possibly both) end up being sold.I don't think Amorim would be averse to the idea of cashing in either of them if it gave him the funds to sign players more suited to his system.

Todays game against ARSENAL will tell us a lot I feel.

Well if we've learned anything about signing "top players" in the last 10 years it's they generally never improve the team.

think utd should sign Cunha and Mateta, then we'd have no worries for the rest of our days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,736 ✭✭✭✭JRant

It really won't in all honesty. We're likely going to have a load of academy players on the benchwith 3 goalkeepers l. Not much to be learned from today that we don't already know.

Our season is effectively over if we go out of EL. For me, I don’t expect our league position to improve much either, given our current player base and injury list. Frankly, the team we have isn’t good enough. We need a LOT of changes and we need them all to work out if we are going to begin the long climb back.

Utd need to sell to buy and I think Amorim should already be focusing on building a team for next season.

In what way will it tell us alot? Not saying you are wrong, just looking for you expand on it a bit more.

for me, if he rotates heavily it means he believes we have a decent chance in the europa league and the league can be forgotten about this season.

that does mean playing kids though given the injury list. and that would tell us about how ready these players are.

it would be interesting if arsenal didnt have such a huge lead against psv - would arteta rotate if that game was in the balance? i think yes, but it would aslo be an admission that the league is done (which it is).

Well they haven't managed it with obscene funds and wages over the last 10 years so maybe more considered approach needed.

Liverpool signed game changing players like Torres, Suarez and Salah for far less than other players going for at the time. Someone like Osimhen with a year left on his deal could be gotten at a knockdown price and immediately improve the attack significantly. United's best signing of the last 10 years was Bruno about 40-50% less of what was paid for Pogba or Maguire so spending the most amount of money on a position is clearly not the answer.

United still generate a ton of money and apparently had no money last summer and managed to spend what, £200 million on players? That was with Rashford and Antony's wages on the books and assuming they would be playing a role.

And apparently they've agreed a €40 million odd fee for a 17 year old to go with the €60 million 18 year old from last Summer. This is top player money they are spending so if the players can't contribute immediately given the state of the squad what's the point (I like Yoro and he's been good recently).

Me thinks that INEOS have done a good job at pulling the wool over eyes and some fans have lapped up this lack of money horsecrap helping them justify making all these cuts. One of the richest men in the world comes in and guts the club (where does this sound familiar from?)

But at the same time if you're using Liverpool as the example they DID pay the most ever for a centre half and a goalkeeper and they're still at the club years later considered among the best in their positions and on massive wages

You have to do both, get your bargains where you can but splash the massive cash on transfers and wages for game changers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 295 ✭✭Toranaga

They were only able to do that when they got an unexpected windfall from one (well, 2) of the worst transfers ever that will likely not be replicated any time soon.

I don't disagree with the sentiment but I think United's biggest problem is attack so was naming the game changing forwards Liverpool got. Could go back and look at Chelsea with Hazard and City with Aguero too. Big transfers, yes. Bank breakers, no. Game changers, definitely.

You'd almost think it wasn't publicly available that united have lost like 300 million in the last few years.

That our losses and psr position weren't clear.

That is wasn't publicly available we were borrowing 200m via credit facilities in each of the last 3 years to keep the club running.

Sounds like the likes of goldbridge has pulled the wool over your eyes just to blame ineos.

Did RA give any update on injuries or players returning?

No returns today. Apparently. Ugarte back for the la real game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,970 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

1 Its an Arsenal game ..if Utd cannot raise themselves up for this …we are in the deep stuff.

2 it will tell if Rasmus can actually be an influence on a game - or just be anywhere the football is not.

3 It will tell us if the defense can actually complete a game without a major blunder.

4 it will tell us if any of those on the bench might be promoted to starters.

I know the Euro game is in the offing but if they just go through the motions vs Arsenal and capitulate, then its really serious.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 295 ✭✭Toranaga

So you think there's no better use of 100m (probably more than most team's yearly budget) under their watch than on Yoro and Quenda? While letting staff go left right and centre to save probably a tenth of that.

You can't go crying about the poor box while outwardly spending so much money. Maybe they won't spend too much this summer, I'd be willing to bet it won't be nothing based on Amorim's comments though. Money will be found one way or another I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,935 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

    We're a football club

We have to spend money on players.

The idea we should prioritise staff over footballers is an odd one to me.

Hojlund dropped to the bench, good call I think
