Read it online in the examiner earlier but with the mod warning I didn't risk sharing? Sat, 08 Mar, 2025 - 20:25

What's the exact issue at hand here? I'm trying to understand what the allegation is? That somebody was paying out in invoices for work not done? Or overpaying? Something like that?

Warning was about speculation - presumably to protect boards from being sued if the wrong person was speculated on.

The media naming the person (and Gould confirming it himself) means it’s no longer speculation.

    From Cork Beo

It is alleged that Gould signed off on a series of invoices and issued payments to another party, knowing that the amounts were in excess of what was originally owed

    Looks to be overpaying

    Scamming €150,000

SF knew about it weeks ago as councilor Kenneth Collins had been questioned on the same fraud allegation.

Going back as far as January according to the examiner article I linked earlier.

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald today said: “In early February, Deputy Thomas Gould informed the party that a complaint had been made against him to the Gardaí and that he had been asked to make a statement on the matter.

“He was interviewed by Gardaí in Cork yesterday and made a detailed statement to them.

“We understand that a number of other people have been questioned as part of Garda inquiries. This includes party councillor Kenneth Collins, who worked for the company, and was questioned by Gardaí in January.

Gould voluntarily appeared in station yesterday to expediate proceedings due to health concerns.

@blackwhite Personally not in good books with the mods, so was over cautious with sharing.

So person 1 does a job for company x that cost 20k, but they got paid 30k instead by alleged person b? Thereby pocketing 10k?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,804 ✭✭✭JVince

And multiply that by 15. (Or whatever number)

Neither Gould or Collins would be the sharpest tools in the box, so I suspect that when it was noticed it probably wasn't too difficult to decipher.

My guess is the gardai have more knowledge than Gould and Collins think they have.

I wonder if mlmd will be making a dail statement - particularly as she was demanding one after a td was arrested for the relatively minor issue of being drunk.

Funny, mlmd knew about the €150,000 fraud allegations against a sitting SF td and sitting councilor at the same time as asking for dail statement on someone who was drunk.

This is clearly in the legal sphere though, so for once her saying that she can't speak due to legal issues is valid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,804 ✭✭✭JVince

Never stopped her or her minions from demanding other parties to make statements on relatively minor issues.

Interesting that she refuses to say that Gould was arrested by the gardai.

“He was interviewed by gardaí in Cork yesterday [Friday] and made a detailed statement to them,” she said. The usual sf cheerleaders seem to be quiet - most likely waiting for direction from belfast 🤣

The company he worked for is John Daly & Sons (JDS Foods) and it was bought by West Cork based Lisavaird Co-op in 2017. It is Lisavaird that found the "irregularities"

    She isn't covering it up.
Already, she is streets ahead of others on this.

If Gould etc is found guilty then they need to go the same way as others not promoted for election or otherwise endorsed..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,879 ✭✭✭pureza

Was the criminal complaint made by Lisavaird CoOp then? That would surely mean it’s not politically motivated because such decisions would have the oversight of their board?

The board of any CoOp or plc have a fiduciary duty in that respect don’t they

It’s a complicated matter technically, was Gould CFO of the purchased food company or what role did he have with them? Did he have any relationship with the recepient(s) of the alleged over spend are probably some things Gardaí are looking into?

Particularly embarrassing for SF regardless if as a party they’re singing and dancing about Leinster house over spending/public money wastage that their T.D’s did not question despite being on its oversight committee and those over spends were not subject to criminal investigation

    This one is

😁 If the 'party' was under investigation for this, you might have a point.
    It isn't of course.

Again, the 'party' is issuing statements and not trying to cover this up. Compare and contrast, but I suspect that won't happen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,323 ✭✭✭✭markodaly

    Terrible look for Gould.

He is known in Cork to be both a loudmouth and a bit of an idiot. Seems he tried to pull a fast one and got caught out.

Me thinks he should resign as a TD a by election should be held.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,804 ✭✭✭JVince

Just refusing to say the word "arrested" - same way sf never says "Northern Ireland" or "Republic of Ireland"

The Belfast dictators make sure certain words are not in a conversation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79,511 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

    😁What?

In almost every news piece SF confirm he 'has been arrested'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79,511 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

He's been found guilty already. Quelle suprise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75,483 ✭✭✭✭L1011

In the time between the first media reports and Goulds name coming out, the Online Friends on Twitter were going hard on "it has to be FFG because otherwise the media would have named them"

Probably more deleted tweets now than on anything else!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,804 ✭✭✭JVince

Can you show me where mlmd says or writes the word "arrested".

The amount of deleted stuff from sf cheerleaders in the past 24 hours almost needs a data center of its own after they realised it was one of theirs that was arrested

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79,511 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

    Gas.
Construct your conspiracy theories all you want.

As if not saying a specific word makes it somehow untrue. 😁

You don’t think it embarrassing that a T.D from your party recently making a song and dance about overspending and waste is now at the centre of a claim that he signed off on exactly that and worse it’s being criminally investigated?

    Quell surprise indeed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79,511 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

    It isn't my party.

If he is guilty yes it is embarrassing for that TD.

If the party had something to do with it, ditto for them.

'Fraud' is the operative word here. Somebody set out to defraud and hide what they were doing. It's not 'waste' and 'overspend'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,879 ✭✭✭pureza

    wrong on a few fronts

1.It is your party as you cheer lead for them here at every opportunity

    Readers aren’t fools

2.He is an SF T.D embroiled now in an over spending controversy

The overspend spotted because it was way ahead of previous spend by what 150k and one he appears to have signed off on?

    3.it is embarrassing

Furthermore the SF councillor it turns out was arrested in January? Who kept that quiet?

I couldn’t possibly comment on the legality of all this or fraud as obviously in all criminal investigations, one is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79,511 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

It’s ‘fraud’ by one or two people. It isn’t departmental incompetence. And no amount of trying will make them similar.
As usual the gun is being jumped.

You now claim they are innocent until proven guilty but were quick to tell us not only they but SF too should be ‘embarrassed’.
If they are innocent- what have they to be embarrassed about?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,804 ✭✭✭JVince

So why won't she say the word?

Similarly, why will she (or any sf member) never call Northern Ireland by it's correct name "Northern Ireland"

    Because she has been told

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79,511 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

    Because she didn’t need to?

    We know they were arrested.

The quality of the conspiracy theories certainly has gone down about here.😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 92,394 ✭✭✭✭JP Liz V1

Has SF made an statement besides Gould himself?

All politicians should be held accountable for their actions and answer questions, will SF and Gould offer this if allowed as AGS investigation?

The quality of the conspiracy theories certainly has gone down about here.😁

If this was any other party you'd be jumping up and down demanding action be taken but as it's members of SF tied up in these allegations you're taking a very different approach!

    It isn't my party.

From what I can see, you're the only one who actually thinks that! You spend hours every day on Boards predominantly posting either anti-FF/FG or pro-SF messages (as you did with what I believe were your previous Boards accounts). I doubt many posters care either but it does stand out when you come out with statements like the above.

I have already said that if guilty he has to go and not promoted or endorsed in elections. No difference to what i have called for others to do.
Great to see all the indignant posters back though. I thought there was a vow of silence taken for a while there 😁

*SF is not ‘my’ party. I currently vote for SF

you’re getting ahead of yourself there it’s being investigated for fraud,no charges,no convictions,no crime at this stage

But if Gould and the other SF guy signed off on something way too expensive by the order of 150,000,then that’s embarrassing for the party shouting about money wastage
