Majority of posts on first FIVE home pages were all Temu related last night .

Site was very bad on Chrome mobile and tablet last night .

I tried to read two threads and posted on one not realizing there were two pages that the 'elastic band ' bouncing would not let me access and ended up getting told off for not keeping up with the thread and posting now irrelevant posts !

Bit hard to keep up with all this bouncing and dragging back to first unread post . Giving up and posting here to mark that because I have stuck with the site all through the changes to Vanilla , new rules etc .

But everyone seems to getting more narky and impatient and who can blame them at this stage 😓

No need to scroll down. Just type a character and a space and the text box magically appears!

    Not a fix, but a handy work-around.

Idk. Displaying a timestamp on a discussion board seems to be both basic and fundamental. That the type of basic stuff test automation should detect and prevent from getting deployed. Ymmv

Anyways, apologies if it is not appropriate to raise things multiple time. I did a cursory search but did not see it.

Just a suggestion, Use Keyword Blocker to define a list of forbidden words that, when used, will block the content (discussion, comment, poll, etc.) from being posted. To learn more, see:

    https://success.vanillaforums.com/kb/articles/269-keyword-blocker

Add Temu to the list of forbidden words, and it should stop all the Temu related spam threads.

Going to thank you personally for that effort 🥰 and of course the other friendly thanker !

Once upon a time we could see who it was that was kind enough to give us a thanks , but alas no more . Yes, except 10 on desktop or tablet , I know ..

Requested before, and turned down on the basis that there's genuine Temu threads on the site.

The amount of moderator action needed on a daily basis just banning & deleting Temu spam accounts & posts warrants banning any mention of “Temu” altogether. Anything positive created on the site associated with them is immediately destroyed by pages upon pages of spam & bullshit.

    I agree 100%

Add to that the amount of posters' time wasted copying and pasting profiles and threads into the spam thread - it is truly ludicrous that it's still going on, and today was off the scale bad.

I remember many moons ago that another platform often promoted by spammers was added to the swear filter. I think it was DHgate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,264 ✭✭✭con747

It's been like that a good few weeks now Jim, reported numerous times. If the word Temu is banned the bots will just find a workaround. I never see so much spam on any other site I visit it seems to be just here.

Without taking the thread in a totally different direction I doubt Israeli bots are targeting boards. I'm fairly sure it was happening well before all that. Anyway, lets keep the thread for reporting bugs.

I just posted the text below in the Spammer thread, repeating it here for visibility.

    ___________________________

I think we should just stop reporting Temu spam, either in this thread or via the Flag/ Report function on the actual spam posts. There are simply too many of them for this approach.

They can be easily identified (by reviewing new sign-ups) and deleted by someone with Admin rights. It's still an ongoing whack-a-mole for whoever that is though - Mike or the other Admins.

Anyway, I have decided that I won't report any more of these T?mu spammers, because reporting does not turn back the tide (think King Canute).

Maybe a temporary fix would be to just exclude Feedback and DR threads from the Recent Posts list. I think those are the only two forums they can post in?

Stopping these spam threads/posts appearing in the Recent list in the first place should be the approach imo.

Thanks to all the other reporters here for the thankless effort, and keep doing it if it feels worthwhile.

    I'm out…

I stopped reporting a while ago, it's a losing battle.

I always used to report the odd one as it appeared if it was at the top of the list. Recently I tried to report a load of them and gave up because I got this stupid vanilla message.

You have posted 2 times within 60 seconds. A spam block is now in effect on your account. You must wait at least 600 seconds before attempting to post again.

    Won't be bothering reporting anymore.

Wake me up when it's all over.

I know that we've been told that the word Temu can't be banned because it would block genuine posters, but at this stage it might be easier to have it blocked anyway except for one single thread where posters could notify admins/cmods/whomever that they need to post about Temu and ask to have their posts released. Or there could be a private forum for Temu-related discussions where people would have to apply to get access, like the old Ranting & Raving or the Online Dating fora.

Just an idea, not sure how feasible it would be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,094 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

But when the bots start posting about Temu won't it just show as ****?

So we'll just have loads of posts saying "**** REFERRAL CODE" etc?

Plus, I don't think the swear filter works on the homepage of the desktop site. I saw a thread recently that had a swear in the title and it wasn't censored there.

No, it wouldn't be a censored word, it's would stop the thread from being posted At least, that's how I understand it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,310 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

I feel the same a lot of the time - why bother when it just keeps getting worse?

There was a time when they only posted in those two threads, but now they're getting their emails registered, so have access to all forums - I've asked more than once why we couldn't have a ban on new registrations opening threads until they had, say, 10 posts (as in the halcyon days of Before Vanilla). The response was that it might affect genuine registrations, and they're so desperate for those that they'll take the hit of the endless spamming.

I genuinely think the site would become unusable if the joint efforts of posters and mods/admins didn't keep whackamole-ing them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,094 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

Would it work to have as part of the registration process an instruction that each newbie must make a specifically worded post in a dedicated "First Post" thread before they can go any further?

ie: "My name is thesandeman and I confirm I am human".

I'm not a tech person and have no idea if it could be done or if the bots could get around it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,310 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Well considering that a fair proportion of them can't even manage to confirm their email addresses before posting in the appropriate forum (as opposed to one of the few available to unregistered users), I'd say that might be a bit of a stretch!

Plus, I've no doubt it won't be possible, because Vanilla.

What triggers a thread to be labelled a "Question" thread?

This thread was opened earlier, one poster asked a clarifying question, the OP replied with "No" - and that's now been bumped to the top of the thread, and labelled as "Answered"

The whole "question" thing is useless, and all it seems to result in is the replies being mixed up randomly as this one demonstrates, and makes a nonsense of the whole thread.

Can that function be disabled? @Boards.ie: Mike

    https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2058401195/can-someone-elses-cash-a-cheque-in-my-name-with-out-me-knowing#latest

ETA - just to add to the ridiculousness of the whole thing - I now see that on desktop, the thread isn't even labelled anywhere as a "Question" - but the answers are all still out of order. At least on mobile you might be able to figure out what's gone on (if you know the foibles of the "Question" thread system) - on desktop it's just made an utter mess of the whole thing.

Your question was answered somewhere previously- Vanilla.

If you refer to the 'verified'/'not verified' in users' profiles, apparently since Vanilla that has nothing to do with email addresses.

Yep, it's the umpteenth Vanilla glitch since the last fix.

Back in the day there was another forum that looked a lot like Boards, in fact I thought it was a sister site to this one. It was probably VBulletin-based but I honestly don't remember. It's still running, it's called askaboutmoney.com. I wonder if they have met the same difficulties when they switched.

That's the 'normal' way to do it, but this was related to another glitch after the last fix that turned most threads into questions.

Rich Text Editor. To edit a paragraph's style, hit tab to get to the paragraph menu. From there you will be able to pick one style. Nothing defaults to paragraph. An inline formatting menu will show up when you select text. Hit tab to get into that menu. Some elements, such as rich link embeds, images, loading indicators, and error messages may get inserted into the editor. You may navigate to these using the arrow keys inside of the editor and delete them with the delete or backspace key.
