Temporary Floor options that are cheap/free?

    Hey all,

I'm about to move into a new build house, with very little budget left for much of anything. I want to save for a year and get hardwood floors put down when I have the cash. I'm looking for really cheap or free options (preferably under 500€ for 100sqm) for some kind of flooring to put down, to live in it for the first year. My dad is fairly handy and could help me do a rough job fitting something. I'm not very DIY savy myself, so this is all new to me.

Could I reuse laminate thats been pulled up from another job? Would a floor fitter sell/give me old laminate do you think?

I was also thinking cheap carpet tiles might be something I could slot down myself.

I've been looking on adverts etc. for flooring, and its mostly people selling 2 boxes leftover for close to shop price, which isnt very helpful considering the size of floor and the cost implications.

    Any/all ideas welcome!

If its a cement floor seal it with polybond to keep the dust down, and leave it as it is, until you have the money

I used Larsen Acrylic concrete sealer on the bare floors while we were finishing out the house - stopped the spread of concrete dust to the finished areas, and gave us time to sort out flooring (about 5 years in the case of our utility shower room)

IMO solid floor while expensive isn’t the best option. It can get damaged with heels , etc

A semi solid or engineered floor can have the same look but be better wearing.

Lino might be an option. How long ago was that concrete floor poured. It’s need to dry out for several weeks before you put down a laminate floor

You can sometimes get very cheap supply and fit, carpet deals... you could use that for stairs and bedrooms. Lino for downstairs, I reckon that's by far the cheapest and least hassle... laminate is going to be a lot of hassle...

3mm corriboard is about the only new floor covering I can think of that comes in under €5/sqm from a physical shop, but I think I'd rather live with a sealed concrete floor.

You could probably get vinyl flooring from Temu or Alibaba for that price though, not sure what shipping, duty and VAT works out at though

Not many people fitting solid wooden floors anymore. Laminate in certain rooms a good option. Depends on your heating system. Alot find them colder in bedrooms as carpet. You could refit older ones but would need to be sure you could source a box or two of the same design new and tbh it would be more hassle then it's worth. No floor fitter would have them though. They are ripped out on site and it's left to the home owner to dispose of.

As someone else stated vinyl an option as is reasonably priced with lots of different design effects for different rooms. Carpet tiles are also cheap and cheerful and do the job. Seen alot in B&Q recently
