I got this transparent case BUT the screen protectors it comes with are too small, they only cover the display and there's a few mm gap to the edge of the glass.

It's the search bar down the bottom, I'd prefer to have apps at the bottom like most Androids. Keep hitting the Search bar instead of WhatsApp from muscle memory

Settings, System, Navigation mode, 3-button navigation

Will put the usual Android triangle, circle and square icons back on the bottom of the screen

Does anyone know to knock off the tapping noise on the keyboard?

I've gone in to settings, sound and vibration and tap and click sounds is disabled but I'm still getting the tapping noise.

    It's very annoying.

A lot of people seem think amazon.co.uk was effected by brexit, i get about €5,000 worth of stuff of amazon every year for over 10 years now and its always been a bargain compaired to .ie sites

I tried the german one a few time, but its much slower and sends the wrong plugs for here

I bought an 8a and an Honor 200 around the same time. I gave the 8a to the other half and I'm glad I did. I don't lik It at all.

I came from a Huawei p30 pro, so I am biased to the honor ui, but other than that, I still find it a superior phone for kinda the same money. Battery life is far superior, acceas to control apps, intuitive controls, camera, screen, dual sim, etc, all better for me.

She hates the pixel. I'm gonna. Hook her up with an honor.

    My 2c.

I don't know how anyone would 'Hate' a pixel 8a. They are pretty much the perfect android experience. Strange. The 7 year support and price makes it a better choice IMO.

Oh, and I forgot to menrion the dreadful charging. Same charger, same cable on any phone and it charges at decent current. Pixel, nope. It tells you to use the cable you got it the box and it goes to drip current taking a factor longer to charge for whats a terrible battery range anyway.

These are my experiences with the phone I have in hand. One of the worst phones I've had, and she feels the same.

I got a Pixel 8 Pro at the start of the year and have to admit I am massively underwhelmed by the phone, this was to replace my Poco X3, I also have a second phone an old iPhone XR

    Issues for me:

In call speaker during a call

Call quality is really bad, the speaker sounds very tinny and sharp, so much so that I sent the first phone back thinking there was a problem with the phone, the second phone I received was the exact same, I have to use the speaker option when in a call, both my iPhone and Poco sound perfect in call

Speakers are also not very loud, Poco and iPhone are louder

    Finger print scanner

I have set this up twice now and have not seen any improvement, sometimes it works straight away, sometimes it can take two to three presses before it works, only works sometimes in the dark, my Poco has a side fingerprint scanner which worked all the time, never had an issue

    Camera

The main reason I bought this phone was for the acclaimed camera improvements, only seen a slight improvement between this and my Poco, pictures taken on my 6 year old iPhone are better in my opinion.

When you take a picture with the pixel some of the images are out of focus, when you go into the picture after taking it, you can see this being fixed by the software, this does not look good for the hardware.

    Screen setup

I could not move or remove the search bar, this is really annoying as I prefer it in the middle of the screen and I don't like having it on the second screen when you swipe right, so much for Google Android not locking down stuff, the same with the date and temperature at the top left, cant be removed.

    Charging

Max charging is 30W, that is bad for a flagship phone, my Poco could charge at 33W and is 3 years older than the pixel and not a flagship phone

    Some Apps are less responsive

I have noticed a lag in some apps when opening them compared to my Poco and having to kill some apps as they are just hanging, never had this issue with the same apps on my Poco

    Positives

Screen is better than my Poco, but I find the automatic brightness less bright in the same conditions as my Poco.

    Its a nice looking phone.

Better IP rating, Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

Being able to set the charging rate to 80%.

    7 year updates.

One thing I am a bit worried about with regards to the updates is if they do the same thing with the battery update seen on the Pixel 4 phones, my Dad has a Pixel 4 phone for the last few years and since the battery update he has to now leave it plugged in all the time as it can go from 100% down to 5% in less than an hour of use, this was never an issue until the update, what if they do the same with the Pixel 8 phones?

Overall, if I had of known what I know now about the phone I would not have bought it especially the bad in call sound

Ah here, i upgraded to the pixel 8a from a Poco X3 Pro after it stopped charging and the camera is light years better on the pixel, especially in low light settings. There is absolutely no comparison, and you will not get a better camera in a phone for the price.

As for how responsive it is, I feel it's as good as an iPhone despite running Nova Launcher and having 300+ apps installed on mine.

The only thing I could ask for is faster charging and a microSD slot, but at the price I paid for it I'm more than happy with those compromises.

Well that is not my experience with the 8 Pro, only found a slight improvement in the pictures, better in low light alright but expected a much bigger improvement overall for a phone that is 3 years newer and a flagship phone.

Mods - should this (now more review type) conversation be moved to https://www.boards.ie/categories/android-devices

We can keep this one then in case any more Pixel 8a Bargains come up as I missed the Amazon one with all the chatter in here

Are there any current offers with the pixel 8a. My 6a just completely died this evening

Three is still the best place to get it - currently 300 when you port a number over to them on PAYG

I'm thinking of buying one on Three. So all I need to do is port over any number and spend €299 on the phone and another €20+ for the first top-up and the phone comes unlocked and can be used with any network, is that correct?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,603 ✭✭✭✭shmeee

Correct, may not even need to buy the Three credit also.

they won't allow you to port a lyca sim, all others are fine

If you buy a €15 Tesco SIM you can give the €15 credit to another Tesco user and use a €5 top up instead to activate it. Probably works with other brands too.

    I've a 48 SIM I can use.
