I wouldn't say it's cold.. Generally about 19.5 vs stat in hallway showing 20.5. But you can feel the change when you go from kitchen/living area which is probably about 22-23 (1.5 higher than hallway stat due to sun, cooking, etc)

That's fair re the timing of it. Seems to work very well for you. So would you heat to 23/24 overnight and let it drift back down to 21 during the day?

Going by usage and not taking account of day and ev units, on ESBN we had a total of 1141.3 for Jan so close to 33% was for heat and hot water.

We are now a full electric household so the 1141 includes for two EV's also, previously I was paying more for diesel just to run a van for the month.

I would expect Oct - Nov, Dec - Jan are the only billing cycles that we will actually pay for electricity and hope to be cost neutral or in profit for the remainder.

The Myenergi app splits out home and EVs. So my 1,122 kWh for Jan (excluding 3 missing days) is just usage for the house (HP and everything else) as far as I know. My EV charging used 244 kWh last month.

I reckon the HP is using well over half of the usage.

Edit: looked at Jul 24 usage for hpuse and only 471 kWh for the house.

We used 850 kWh in January for the house. That would be mostly heat pump. And another 500 for the car. House is about 190 m2 also.

Seems very high? What do you have the temps set at? Is the house draughty?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,545 ✭✭✭✭fits

temps set at around 19 degrees. The house is linked to an old building so we lose a bit of heat there. It’s standard usage for us around this time of year.

Quick update on my HP running costs this winter…to catch everyone up, I changed my stratagey from letting the HP work away by itself and call for heat anytime, to putting it on at set times, trying the theory of open zones eg heating the entire house to have just one zone. Primarlity wanted to use the Bord Gais EV rate of 6.33 cent at night to build up thermal mass, then on for a couple of hours after the peak rate in the evening.

As you can see my daily cost are not much over €4/day, that really cold spell a few weeks back I had to run a lot more but that was exceptional weather. Last winter I was between €5-8/day so all in all its a bit of a success for me.

I think I could shave off a few more kWh in the evening run, cutting back on the time, but no one is complaining in the house so I will leave it alone for now. Would like to have a bit more smart controls but that might be next years project, the missus stopped me this year!

    image.png

Dont think my actual daily kWh is much lower than last year (about 20 kWh/day) overall, but I am heating at a really low rate 6.33c/kWh

    image.png

The yellow line here is why my HP comes on…kicks in at 7pm for a few hours but I try as much as possible set the temps to realistic set points, eg only 20.5 in the living room. At night at 3am the heating comes on in the entore house and I have the setpoints at like 23 degs so makes all the zones open. I noticed yesterday evening it didnt call for heat at all because we had enough solar gain as to not need it.

I know this will be a varying answer as every house size is different and everybodys usage will be different etc

But roughly, how much are your 2 month electricity bills on average during the colder winter months?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,925 ✭✭✭ECO_Mental

Im only with BG since last October and their billing periods are all over the place, eg first bill was 14 days then 47 days then 14 days…

Anyway for the period to the end of the year their bill was for 47 days, I had a FIT payment and a gov payment but here is a screen shot of it

There is some great information, insights and analysis in this thread - thanks.

I am running a Samsung Joule HP system, full UFH throughout bottom floor of a mostly bungalow (2450 sq ft)and stats on a schedule and I have been experimenting on and off for a couple of years and happy to see I am in line with many on here in terms of average kwh usage.

I do have a question and hoping someone might have some advice. I have a single insulated office/gym space in my upstairs (4m x 7m) and it is wired and ready for two smart electric radiators in the future though I suspect one large is enough. It is a warm space 9 months a year due to solar gain from two velux windows and also a bit of heat rising through the stairs entry.

The latest cold snap has got me thinking about adding the electric rads/panels again as I did feel a chill working in the space in December and January. Wondering if anyone has taken advantage of their heat pump for a similar heat requirement?

The electric radiator seems quick, easy and relatively low up-front cost (300-400 euro for the rad) but perhaps I am missing a trick with my plant room being directly beneath the space.

Also curious - what are you guys using to clean the coils on the outside unit?

Just a thought - if it's going to be used as a gym, do you really need it to be warm?

My last one covered Nov & Dec and was around €350 excluding government credit.

Expecting another big one next month which will cover Jan&Feb, then hopefully plain sailing until next Winter.

Really impressive low heating costs here for the house sizes mentioned.

In term of total running costs ..ie + depreciation.

I'm just wondering what the typical life span for an Air to water unit is? Less than 10 years? (I've A standard oil burner that'll go for 20yrs + easily, indoor model).with maybe a 5 to 6k replacement cost.

Would the depreciation be €1,500 per year for an Air to water unit replacement. (I've read some disaster stories here on boards where models went out of state & parts not available.)

Mine is 10 years old and still running fine but not sure if part will be available easily if and when needed. Complete replacement upgrade requires outdoor unit, new water tank and some plumbing\electrical work and it won't be cheap. But the savings made will easily pay the cost I think. My estimate based on the bills heating and hot water from HP costs average around 500e a year.

Just completing an online survey and obviously Energia are looking at the tariffs with heat pumps in mind, this is one of the questions:-

That bottom one doesn't even make sense.

There's no way to accurately tell what is and isn't heatpump use.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,746 ✭✭✭THE ALM

That was my thinking as I don't know how they could differentiate.

Even though the graphs are the wrong way around I think having the two cheap windows, depending on price, would be the way to go and allow a bit of flexibility for charging batteries, ev's etc. In winter, dull days you could be charging a battery at night for the morning and in the afternoon to get you through the evening.

1,500 seems too high by at least a factor of 2, an ASHP should last 15 years + and replacing should be cheaper that initial installation.

assume it would be similar to what OVO have in the UK, where you allow the electricity provide to connect to your heatpump data.

    February stats

(192sqm 3 story A3 rated house, UFH downstairs, Rads upstairs, DHW heated on night rates)

375 KWH used for HP in Feb, 163 day and 212 night Average daily is 13.4 at a cost of €2.43

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,287 ✭✭✭dominatinMC

    Feb stats for myself.

245 m2, A3 rated dormer bungalow. UFH downstairs and rads upstairs

527 kWh which is comprised of 103 for DHW and 424 for heating. Bit on the high side for my liking but I'd attribute some of that usage to a dodgy HP service which reset some settings and had the HP consuming too much energy.

In any case, that 527 kWh converts to 2.15 kWh/m2 which isn't too far from the previous poster.

150sqm A2. UFH downstairs radiators upstairs though rarely used. I don't have HP specific usage data but I run heating, dhw, wash machine, dishwasher at night rates. February was mild this year. Usage was less than last year by about 100kWh

A1 210sqm house. Used 197kWh for heat and 54kWh for hot water. UFH upstairs and down. Hotwater set at 50c and downstairs set to 21.5c We run the heatpump at night rate 11-8am and hotwater at 2am on ev rate.

Heating cost 25.61 euros and hot water 3.42 euros for the month of Feb.
