Buying in Maynooth

Hi there, we're looking to buy in Maynooth and have seen something we like in Old Greenfield, what's the general opinion about this area nowadays? There seems to be a fair bit of negative views on it going back a good few years, is it still viewed as a rougher area? The house is very nice and it all seems pretty quiet, but not being from Maynooth ourselves, we're a bit concerned about the comments local people have made on here over the years! Bearing in mind, no place is perfect, but is it really a place to avoid still?

Living in Maynooth nearly 3.5 years now and on Newtown Road so not very far away at all and I'd have thought it was fine tbh. Location is amazing with village nearby and train station too. It's a cul de sac with the bollards down one end so you wouldn't get much passing traffic either.

Its generally grand apart from a few families. Id visit a few times at various times of the day to have a look. They still have bonfires at halloween and you'll be considered a blow in forever. Plenty of curtain twitchers.

Theres no real issue with students in any estates anymore so if you have other options in mind id go for them first.

TBH I've lived in the town for over 20 years, that estate has changed a lot. My main worry for you is, there's a lot of issues in the town in general. It's buried in traffic on all sides. No community centre, no real amenities, decent schools but overall town is fairly neglected imo. Was commenting to a friend recently and both of us agreed if we were going to buy a house now, it prob wouldn't be here. Which is a sad state of how things have gone.

Agreed. Im here my whole life. 40yrs. Id love to move.

Op dont forget there are 85 all social houses going in behind old greenfield. Bound to be problems.

Id avoid maynooth as a whole.

There's no bad or rough spots in Maynooth. Anyone who says there are has never lived in a place where there are actual rough spots.

Maynooth never has any incidents like serious assaults, sexual assaults or murders.

Completely agree. I feel Maynooth is very very safe and even if some social housing comes in that's probably peanuts compared to other areas.

Aside from a community centre I'm not sure of anythign that Maynooth is really missing tbh.

    Agree on the safety aspect.

What have other towns that Maynooth doesn't… community centre, amenity centre, cinema, swimming pool, theatre/venue, library representative of the size of town, community garden… and that's just to start.

I’d say that prob has a rep as one of the ‘worst’ parts of Maynooth .Whether the town itself is ‘bad’ is another story .I would have said no 2-3 years ago but sure the whole country is going the same way now …Traditionally Old Greenfield was associated with ‘rowdy’ students and was also some of the furthest locations from the town centre .But as nowadays can be harder to judge as very rough areas become gentrified etc .Always wise to just visit yourself several times at different times of day and night .

Community centre, theatre / venue & Health center. The genuine missing items Hopefully Naoise can work some magic

Would love a cinema and theatre / venue but don't see those as essential and can't see how they'd turn a profit - Liffey Valley is just down the road from cinema point of view and in terms of touring productions we're not that far away to go to shows whether comedy, dramatic or music. If we had a venue it'd surely struggle to stay in operation?

100% agree on community centre and health centre though.

More green/public spaces are badly needed as well in my opinion, ideally a decently sized public park.

I'd advise anyone thinking of buying in Maynooth to visit the town in their car at 5pm. The traffic is shocking. By far the worst in North Kildare.

Not a cinema a venue. Somewhere a small performance can take place. A standup comedian, small play or a band etc.,

Something like the Moat Theatre in Naas.

While it doesn't have the charm of a theatre or venue, the Glenroyal does this

I don't think any self respecting comedian, band or theatre company is going to book a show for a hotel wedding/conference venue.

Keith Barry for example has had shows there, Deirdre O'Kane was in the K Club recently. I go to gigs a fair bit and would love a good venue but can't see how it'd turn a profit here when Dublin isn't that far away. Even looking at The Moat Theatre (which I haven't been to) I've no idea how that can be operational given the events it's got coming up.

College's development plan was to give us a cinema and a theatre.

College can't built a Student Centre properly.

So we're not getting either, realistically.

The college is actually a hinderance to the town for getting new infrastructure, swimming pool, cinema, theatre - don't need one the college has one, or is building one. The Aula Maxima has been used for a few bits down the years, as was the swimming pool before its…. issues.

Based on what's happened since the election, seeing some work at all would be magic…
