Terrible performance from us on Friday evening, I was annoyed at the ref at times but our performance was worse, we gifted two tries to them and butchered a few of our own chances. Great to see Nankivell back, himself and Farrell will be a much better pairing in midfield. The injuries from A game cost us but even at that we should have been better. At the end of the night we came away with two valuable points and results elsewhere probably sugar coated our result.

Unless we win the champions cup it doesn't matter that we aren't being "smashed out of the gate in Europe" because our URC position is what will count. We could lose in the final but not take part in the Champions Cup next season. On that note we close out the URC season with fixtures against Glasgow, Connacht, Bulls, Ulster and Benetton. There's only 9 points separating 4th placed sharks from 15th place Zebre. With that kind of competitiveness the chances of us not making champions cup next year are very real this season

With regards my "rebuild" mentality. If we are playing Challenge Cup next season we would hopefully be up against opponents that we have a better chance against. This gives us an opportunity to rest our bigger name players during the European weeks and use them more during URC weeks. Something like that would help the injury profile and the issue we had last season of having to rest the likes of Crowley and Murray for the Leinster game wouldn't happen in such a scenario

A year in Challenge Cup would be unlikely to hurt finances that much

I not sure this is the place to be discussing the Top14 here but if it didn't warrant a red card then the disciplinary hearing can rescind the red card, he doesn't necessarily have to serve a ban.

"Oh yeah, sure, because less revenue, smaller crowds, and weaker sponsorships are exactly what Munster needs. Maybe we should start applying for the AIL while we're at it?"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 872 ✭✭✭antfin

Clearly I'm referencing it in the context of whether he might be facing Munster rather than a comment on the Top 14. Depending on how a disciplinary committee might view it he could be eligible to face Munster. He's quite an impact player and with La Rochelle in very unpredictable form I think it could be a stroke of luck for Munster if he's not available. A win on the road in France combined with a few players coming back from injury and international duty and a new coach incoming could really change the mindset for the last few weeks of the season similar to the kick-start of the win in 2023.

The Challenge Cup has the same number of home games and we will still have the URC TV rights so should be a minimal revenue change. Smaller crowds, not sure if they can get much smaller. The best attended matches this season so far are the Leinster and Maori ones, we can always host another side for a friendly and Leinster is guaranteed every year. We didn't play much better than an AIL side on Friday so you make a good point there

I think he's had three red cards now

six…….. six red cards since 2013

If it comes to pass that we're in the Challenge Cup next season or any season we'll survive but it's daft for anyone to suggest they'll be little or no financial implications or that it's good for Munster to use to rebuild.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,622 ✭✭✭Ben Bailey

Going deeper in (or winning) a Challenge Cup would help rebuild numbers, attract coverage & sponsors. Pre 1/8 final exits from the Champions Cup is not what supporters, TV audiences & sponsors want. Being able to concentrate more on next season's URC & play your way back into home Champions Cup 1/4 finals, on the back of a Challenge Cup final / win is not the worst outcome. Particularly with Donk as a new HC on board.

The Challenge Cup has the same number of home games

Same number of games, yes. Same number of tickets sold? Very unlikely.

We've had a complete disaster of a season so far and away to La Rochelle I can only see one outcome. Is it better for Munster to be competing to win the Challenge Cup and the URC or to be shown up in the R16 and be gifting tries to visiting sides in the URC?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 26,511 ✭✭✭✭phog

You make it seem like that if we were in the Challenge Cup we'd have been better last Friday night.

Can you tell me the Lotto numbers for Saturday night now as well

LAR have lost 6 in a row. Munster absolutely have a chance there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,595 ✭✭✭Brief_Lives

I would have preferred to be in the Challenge cup this year….. we have had a horror show in S&C and injuries, but with all the returning players after the 6 nation, we could have possibly won it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,280 ✭✭✭50HX

I would agree with this, if we can get a few heavy hitters back & Skelton missing(possibly) then yes anything is possible on the day

We've 3 away games up nxt, it's not inconceivable that we could put something together in the nxt month.

It's cup rugby anything can happen

    I'm really looking forward it

Couldn't say the same if it were Challenge cup, I doubt there are too many Benetton fans wushing they weren't heading to Castres

Challenge cup would be a financial disaster for Munster.

    Season ticket renewals would suffer.

Munster Rugby is affected by people travelling long distances.

It could be more financially beneficial to swap two URC games in Cork for two challenge cup games if such a disaster occurred.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,873 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

For the benefit of anybody just joining this conversation I never suggested such a thing

Hopefully but Munster are the kings of losing games they really should have won

Supporters club season ticket renewals happen in April for the following season, oftentimes before we officially know if we're challenge or champions cup, so they would be largely unaffected. I think there's ~6,000 MRSC season ticket holders so we absolutely could all cram into Musgrave, which in itself would be awesome!

"Hopefully but Munster are the kings of losing games they really should have won"

The verb for that is 'to Ulster it up'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 231 ✭✭timothydec77

Not possible then. Hospitality would be sold in April.

Thomond it is if nightmare challenge cup happens.

It’s not a good clear out, but I don’t see a 3+ match ban. He’ll get something alright, but I think he’ll be back for the Munster game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,595 ✭✭✭Brief_Lives

he has a poor discipline record, and as someone pointed out above, or previous page, in 2022 he got an increase to his sanction.

6 red cards for him in total, since 2013

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 746 ✭✭✭MangleBadger

I think it is a pretty poor clear out. He blatantly turns his shoulder into the other players head.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,852 ✭✭✭snotboogie

This post is completely incoherent. Being competitive in the champions cup doesn't matter because we need to finish top 8 in the URC to qualify for the champions cup. But it would actually be a good thing not to finish in the top 8 so we could be competitive in the challenge cup, even though being competitive in Europe doesn't matter because we need to focus on finishing top 8 in the URC, which of course we don't need to finish top 8 in because its better to be in the challenge cup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 231 ✭✭timothydec77

I think the poster is saying that the squad is not strong enough for next year to be competitive on two fronts.

As we all know the 3 inter pros and 2 European games are the marquee games of the season.

The crowds at any potential Challenge Cup matches is likely to be around 10 k for group home games. Outside of North Munster very few would travel.

Of course the season isn't over yet and it's all to play for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,873 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

I never said it would be a good thing to finish outside of the Top 8, obviously like everybody here I want to see us winning as many games as possible and finishing as high in the table as possible

If we continue with the current mantra of collapsing scrums, forward passing and gifting tries I don't see us finishing in the top 8. A loss in our next game away to Glasgow and wins by Cardiff (home to Lions,) Edinburgh (away to Benneton) and Connacht (away to Ospreys) puts us in 8th

Another way of putting it, we're only 2 losses away from having an uphill battle to close the season out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,219 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

Ah lads, there's no prospect of not finishing in the top 8.

The Edinburgh game was pretty grim but get a few players back from Ireland camp and it'll be grand. The away trip to Glasgow will probably be a loss but after that you'd expect Munster to win pretty much every game.

I don't know the financial side of it for definite, but I'd imagine if Munster played a few Challenge Cup matches with Home advantage they might make the same amount of money as they would if they played the Champions Cup and only had the two pool matches at Home.

Would anyone be more informed on that to give an idea of how it would affect the finances?
Would Munster need three or four Home matches in the Challenge Cup to equal the income from two Home pool matches in the Champions Cup?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,333 ✭✭✭Boscoirl

Munster games are something you must endure these days, the same masochists would go to both Champions or challenge cup games, its sponsorship that would suffer( TV money too?) . but may well be balanced out by home knock out games.

Saying that, there is no player or coach in Munster that should be thinking we'd be better off in the Challenge Cup, if there was, they should be shown the door.

They couldn't charge the same ticket prices for a Challenge Cup game and they wouldn't get 20k+ attendances for those games either. They'd also have to reduce the charge for corporate packages or sponsorships.
