Good result yesterday. ROD was outstanding but having Aido there really gives him a bit of freedom. I thought McHugh and Hession both did very well to nullify the Influence of the Cliffords.
I saw a fair few Kerry fans moaning about the ref. Not sure what game they saw but given the different level of treatment permitted to the 2 number 13’s on the pitch I don’t see what they can be complaining about.
We’re not safe yet unless other teams do us favours so we’ll need to aim for a win against Derry.

Good to see the attacking verve return again, and they've been rewarded with points on the board.

Results have also gone Mayo's way today, and can seal safety with a result in Derry, while Tyrone are facing a daunting trip to Donegal who will need 1 more win to seal a top 2 slot.

A win against Derry wouldn't be quite enough to seal it on its own.

Still possible for a team to go down on 7 points. We'd need one of a Kerry loss, a Dublin loss or a Tyrone draw/loss - Dublin & Tyrone playing in R7 so they can't both get to 7 if Dublin lose in R6 - to be sure of being safe with a win before going into R7.

Great angle of ROD's two pointer at the end of the 1st half

Still possible for a team to be relegated on 7 and for a team to make the final on 8, I think. For the secondary competition, the league does throw up plenty of excitement.

We would certainly have taken this position after Round 2.

Was great to see a bit of running football again on Saturday. Ryan and Aidan got plenty of the plaudits, and deservingly so, but I think McHugh and Ruane deserve phrase. McHugh did a very good job on Clifford (still getting 5 points - the guy doesn't even need an inch) and Ruane showed some real leadership, as he had done against Armagh as well. He has often got a bit of flack for his League form but he's been very impressive in the last two matches.

Not too many reasons to be critical from the game. Reape needs to get those kickouts away a bit sooner. Coen got done for the goal but I thought he did an awful lot of the dirty work in the first half.

This is so nonsensical as to be almost not worth replying to. I played gaelic football for 25 years and was a freetaker pretty much that whole time. A light breeze can make a long kick not worth kicking. I would say there was a breeze of some kind every time i took to a pitch. It doesnt need to be "windy" to have an effect. The 2 point rule exacerbates that effect.

Seriously? You think a light summer breeze will prevent long range kickers from scoring outside 40m? Now that's nonsensical.

Even on summer days where a breeze is stronger a team will have it for half the game and be more likely to go for 2 pointers.

What was the story with Neary, why didn't he play the last day?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,467 ✭✭✭Westernview

Just watched the OTB football pod on youtube. Very good explanation of why managers are genuinely frustrated with the rules and the pressure it's putting them under. But on the flipside they also explain why the supporters are enjoying the games now because all the basic gaelic football skills are being rewarded. Paddy, Tommy and James are all big fans of new rules.

Didn't listen to it but McGeeney made some very good and simple points after the Dublin game. The main one being that it's pretty ridiculous for Managers to be left in limbo / for the rules to potentially change again so close to Championship. I think his overall point was, change the rules, but at least give certainty that the rules will be in place for a full year and then carry out a review - at the moment, they don't know what the rules will be and championship is only around the corner.

I think the way they are reviewing it after 5 rounds isn't perfect but the best option available. At least they can clarify and tweak some of the concerns managers have now. Otherwise we will be listening to McGeeney and others complaining all the way through the championship.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,645 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

Agreed, it's not perfect but I would say it's the best option. Just had a quick listen to the pod and if it is just "tweaks", then I suppose it is something that managers should be able to adjust to fairly quickly. The goalkeeper one would be more than a tweak though. All teams / managers will be in the same boat so there is fairness in that... But I do get why managers are frustrated by it.

Id prefer if the goalkeeper stayed inside his own half but I understand how it can help create overlaps against mass defences. It still looks wrong though.

Hopefully most of the issues will be ironed out soon and managers adapt to the rules. It could be a great championship ahead.

Yes, i do. Standing on the 45 with a light breeze against you can be enough to force a kicker to go short. The wind has a significant effect on a game. Its why a captain winning the toss will elect to play with it in case he doesnt have that advantage in the second half.

Some fantastic groups there, including a few where you can see all 4 teams fancying their chances. Group 3 in Senior especially, I'd struggle to call a winner or likely for relegation.

I'd have been thinking Westport for Senior (the underage coming through nudging them just ahead of Ballina), Moy Davitts for intermediate (though a host of teams that'll compete hard there - excited to see what The Neale can do if they get a decent run on injuries) and a toss of a coin between 4 or 5 in Junior… but with the new rules it'll be harder than ever to predict so zero confidence in myself on those.

Can't wait. I'd be hoping for a few of the newer faces to have breakout years across the grades.

Westport probably have the best overall squad but they're missing a couple of real "go to" players that they can rely on when they're up against it.

With a new manager and if Paddy is fit, Castlebar should be much closer this year than they have been, hopefully they'll play a better style of football at least.

With the strength Ballina have around the middle, I think the new rules will really suit them. Breaffy will benefit from that as well imo

Group 3 in the senior does seem to be wide open. Can see Group 2 being fairly tight as well.

Balla and Mayo Gaels will be sick of the sight of each other. Think it's the third year in a row they've been in the same group.

Any sign of the fixtures for the league? Any idea when its starting?

Ya think that would be out before the championship ones with it starting in weeks

Happy to see the rules tweaked for the last two rounds.

They've been great to now and the tweaks will improve them.

Feck the managers opinion TBH, they'd be complaining no matter what. It's a much better spectacle and I have no doubt a much more enjoyable game to play for the players.

The managers will come and go and will need to adapt but not too much heed should be paid to them on the rules.

Think it's the end of April before the league starts. You would think they'd have them up by now though. Kelly Cup isn't starting for a couple of weeks, those fixtures are up.

Apologies If I'm misinterpreting the rules (both original and the tweaks) - I'm away and haven't actually watched any football under the new rules - but the change regarding the punishment for breaking the 4v3 rule seems to have a potential catch that I haven't seen anyone mention.

If the punishment for breaking this rule is now just a free at the halfway line where they crossed it, what is to stop a team just ignoring it at the end of a game? For example, there are 60 seconds left and your team is 1 point up. What is to stop you effectively ignoring the rule and piling everyone back, if the penalty for that is just a free on the halfway line? Is it possible to have an increased penalty for repeated infractions, or am I missing something else?

"If the punishment for breaking this rule is now just a free at the halfway line…"

    It's not.

The punishments there (4.35 & 4.36) haven't changed (free on the halfway when breaching it while contesting or carrying the ball and a free on the 20m line [or 40m arc if you choose] for breaching it in every other scenario - though some messy new exceptions where it won't get pulled when not interfering in play that make it a little convoluted), just the wording of them that has been tweaked to take into account the new 4/3 setup instead of the old 3/3 one.

Last group game of the Kelly (and other similar cups) are in the calendar for the 30th March so by the time the finals are played it'll be mid-late April I'd say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,293 ✭✭✭Padkir

Ah, that makes more sense. Thanks for clarifying!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,134 ✭✭✭crusd

The interfering with play scenario n doesn't make sense - the rule is not the specific outfield players remain back, just the 3 do, any 3. SO if the corner back comes up and takes possession on the opposing 65 on the left wing, the "offending" team could legitimately argue that it was actually the wing back on the opposite touchline who was supposed to remain back and he wasn't interfeering with play. So its impossible to judge who is and isn't interfering with play.

To my mind there should be just two scenarios - if the team in possession offend - free on half way, and if the team out of possession offend 13m free

I presume if you an extra player up and ANY interfere with play, then that's penalised.
