Does Ireland have fully functional 5G technology?

I understand legit 5G increases internet speeds by about a factor of 10.

Typical 5G in Ireland is slightly better speeds, slightly better signal.

    Does that sound about right?

5G in Ireland operates in NSA mode, non-standalone, it is piggybacking on a 4G network.

Not sure if any operator has moved to SA yet. So not yet fully functional.

Better signal will be down to your proximity to a 5G mast and the insulation properties of the building you're in.

I guess the answer there is 10 times better than what?

The maximum speed of 4G is 100Mbps. Never in my life have I gotten anything like 100Mbps on 4G. I upgraded my phone last year to 5g and my home Internet is 5g. The difference in speed is very noticeable. According to fast.com, on my home Internet I'm currently getting 52Mbps.

So the 5g might be 10 times what you get with 4G, but you were not getting the full theoretical amount from 4g anyway.

My brother has a Huawei 4G router and external MIMO antenna pointing at a mast 8.5 km distance.

Speed tests up to 150 Mbps

likely connecting to 4G+ then which utilizes carrier aggregation, rather than standalone 4G

It is long time since i've seen 4G+ on my B818, i think 2023, but then three started messing around - 4G no matter what, speeds still OK, dropped by ~50-70Mbps

5G is somewhat worse on DL while connecting to the same mast with ZTE801

Obviously 10 times better than the 4G speeds I'm currently getting.

What speeds are you currently getting?

I'm on 4g at the moment and getting 10 Mbps.

The 5g I have at home is at least 5 times faster.

Its a per setup/location matter , depend on multitude of factors
    Current 4G for me

I have a three 5g router and the best speeds at night I get with the router just sitting where it's convenient is ~250Mbps, which more than meets my needs. With 4g+ the best speeds I see on my phone in the same location are ~150Mbps so not quite double the speed. In my previous home I was lucky to see ~50Mbps with 4g+.

Signal quality, congestion, phone, router, chipset, Wifi type, Wifi congestion, internal and external obstacles etc. will all contribute to the best speeds you get. I doubt anyone is achieving the 1Gbps (realistic) broadcast maximum of 5g. In practice the best speeds I've seen have been ~500Mbps for 5g, which is significantly faster than the ~200Mbps max I've seen on 4g+, but in reality there's very little difference between those speeds unless you're downloading a large game or movie.

I recall someone posting here some months ago approximately 1 Gbps DL on 5G, in Cork iirc.

Seems reasonably fast in the middle of Cork City on Eir. I was just randomly testing it the other day.

    Upload's a bit pedestrian though.

    Phone or router?

Seen 1Gb speeds on the phones before, yet to see on mobile broadband router…

Edit: ignore, see iph15pro. Standing - not seen on router yet.

iPhone - just wandering around in the city centre.

I've seen a couple of >1mbit/s on the phone too.

It seems to be highly dependent on where you are - shouldn't make any difference whether it's a phone or router, as long as it's a 5G service and is compatible with the bands available.

Also bear in mind that Wi-Fi may be limiting the speeds from the router. Depending on how good the Wi-Fi setup is, and what the devices are capable of that you've connected to it, it's quite feasible you will never see 1Gbit/s even if the 5G is capable of it. Realistically a lot of Wi-Fi 6 routers won't deliver those speeds in real world conditions —especially cheap / low spec ones, which the mobile network provided ones likely are.

I'm not sure if this is considered respectable or distinctly sub par at the moment?

    Three mobile?

Considered one of the better mobile network data providers from what I've been told?

"Shouldn't" is good choice of wording. When i see it on router i will change my view, have not yet, not even 500.
On my ZTE801 cant even get 150DL from same mast that B818 4G run 180-190

I hear of ~300 yes, however, back in 2021 i had 250-260 on 4G(+) myself, still on same B818 . Ignore "Galway City", test still in my usual location, mast on this test is ~4km away, external MIMO at play.

and i never test over WiFi, even over Cisco AP's that i run , unless i am testing WiFi itself.

Again, it is location/setup and many other factors dependent, but at the moment for me - 5G sucks

i read Eir - must be the only 5G mast in the region and they make it stand out :D

Wow that's impressive. Mustn't have been much congestion on that cell.
