USB disconnecting and reconnecting

    Hey,

I recently built a new PC

    Motherboard: gigabyte b650 gaming x ax v2

    Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

    RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengence

    Power Supply: 850W Corsair

    Case: Lancool 216

    Graphics Card: Radeon 7900XT

For a few weeks all was good no issues but lately since I started playing God of War I have been having issues with my USB ports disconnecting and reconnecting after a second or two. Initially I thought it was just the mouse but the external HDDs I had plugged in at the back were also disconnecting but not the keyboard. Im also occasionally getting weird zooming out not just in games but on the desktop.

Ive tried a few of the suggested fixes (looking to update drivers, unchecking the box to allow the computer to shut down the USB ports to preserve power)

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Is there anything in the event viewer logs, under Windows → System when it happens? Anything about power state changes should get logged.

    Nothing that relates I believe.

I checked it there after the most recent disconnection and at the same time 3 events were logged

Attempted to add URL (http://*:2869/upnp/eventing/) to URL group (0xFE00000720000005). Status: 0x0. Process Id 0x2D70 Executable path \Device\HarddiskVolume3\Windows\System32\svchost.exe, User LOCAL SERVICE

Removed URL (http://*:2869/upnp/eventing/) from URL group (0xFE00000720000005). Process Id 0x2D70 Executable path \Device\HarddiskVolume3\Windows\System32\svchost.exe, User LOCAL SERVICE

But nothing relating to USB. Its very strange. I dont know whether I should look to uninstall drivers for the USB ports or maybe try a different mouse to see if maybe a fault with the current mouse is causing issues with the USB ports as a whole

Make sure all your chipset drivers are installed to the latest version and remove/swap any usb devices you can like the mouse.

It could also be a specific port (or set of ports) so you should probably include trying disconnecting the front-panel/case usb connections along with swapping/moving things around.

I think the usb power stuff on windows can be hidden in multiple places but I'm not the person to point you in those directions, or anything else windows specific tbh :(

I've seen this behavior on various versions of windows for over two decades. I would bet good money it's power management.

The below link has instructions for disabling it:

    https://www.verizon.com/support/knowledge-base-14375/

I'm surprised it's still even a feature. Why would you ever want windows to randomly disable a USB device to save power on a desktop? On a laptop, while on battery I suppose there could be an argument, but on a desktop?

Anyway, try that and report back.

Thanks everyone. I had tried that previously. Still having the same issue. Ive tried updating the chipset drivers and if Im still having issues Ill try the latest BIOS update

Updating the Chipset Drivers and the BIOS and a new mouse seems to have reduced it a bit. Should note mouse is connected to front panel. HDDs were connected to the rear but were also affected before the changes I made

If for arguments sake there is a problem with the front panel usb then it could be triggering the entire usb system to fall over when it has a problem. So the fact the rear and front usb both had things connected which had a problem doesn't mean neither or both are the source of the problem, one could be making them both have problems.

Whats odd is the only thing currently plugged into the back is the wireless keyboard which seems unaffected when the mouse & HDD disconnect. I currently have the HDD disconnected and its only the mouse in the front panel currently affected.

The keyboard is in the USB 3.2 Gen 1 port. The only reason the mouse is in the front is because I prefer a wired mouse but wireless keyboard. I believe the front ports of the lancool 216 are 3.0. The HDDs I believe were in the 2 lower USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports are the back. Ill try plugging the mouse into the back in one of the 3.2 ports and see if that makes a difference.

I, too, prefer a wired mouse.

Front panel USB ports are notoriously finicky. The rear ports are usually soldered directly onto the motherboard whereas the front panel ports are connected by a short cheap wire with very light insulation which in some scenarios effectively turn them into an antenna for every straw electrical signal going.

Sadly there's no block diagram in the manual for your board :( On the back panel the usb-c port, the red 3.2 gen 2 type A and 1 of the 3.2 gen 1 ports are hooked up directly to the cpu, the 3 usb 2.0 ports are through a hub to the cpu and 2 of the 3.2 gen 1 ports are from the chipset. The internal usb headers all come from the chipset.

At a guess the 2 ports under the ethernet are from the chipset so those and the front-panel ports are all tied to the chipset while the other ports are not and by the sounds of it that's where you had the usb drives.

Ive changed mice and ports to back ports. Seem to still be having the issue though much less frequently

Try unplugging the front panel ports from the motherboard. If they're still producing a noisy signal and resetting the controller, they may need to be disconnected, not just having the devices moved away.

I would disconnect front case usb from motherboard and see if problem is gone.

It may be a front panel issue. I havent disconnected it but I have been playing to test it a bit more and I thin k while the disconnection noise comes up still the mouse or keyboard dont seem to actually disonnect anymore. The weird zoom out on the screen still does occasionally.
