The economy (as a universal pie) was doing "OK" under the Dems in 2024.If it disimproves (or even stays as was) then that cannot help the "Republicans"

Will there be elections if King Trump could lose, though.?

The "American people" would surely want him or his designate to carry on regardless?

Popular protest ,properly organized may be their best hope.A Washington Spring.

It seems more likely to me that it was produced by persons unknown as, at best, satire, but more likely to mock him. They got it to him directly (it wasn't re-truthed/twittered) and he was completely enthusiastic about it as he has no imagination and saw it as his vision come to life, so he posted it. If it was produced by/for his team it is unlikely they would have deliberately included the bearded belly dancers.

However its possible the AI 'saw/learned from' veiled belly dancers and interpreted the veils as beards.

Maybe it was Musk's rats who produced it and were mocking him, the beards were only visible for about a second. Where would they have got the idea to mock him from? Surely not Musk, the person whose son had some how picked up on theories about the validity of Trump's presidency? Musk seems to be getting a kick out of living dangerously, he's not been exactly subtle about putting himself forward.

Too early to tell how it will play out - election interference is certainly something that MAGA will try and do- in what manner I don’t know yet- if the republicans wish to hang on to their seats in the mid terms though, they’ll need to reign in their Trump lapdog - as for the Dems, I don’t see them as a strong joint force - when it really mattered, ie, the last presidential election, they were just a bunch of word salad - and an expensive bunch at that given what Hollywood celebs were allegedly paid to support them.

“It’s the economy” will still stand come next election - the worst that can happen for the next Dem presidential candidate is that the economy is strong.

Name one thing he negotiated where that tactic actually worked out?

Trump has been around so many mafia goons his entire life, it's the only way he knows how to work. It's not demand more and get what you want. It's demand more, expect it all, end up with nothing.

The guys a top class clown. Believing there's any intelligence behind anything he does only makes anyone that believes that look like a fool also.

He would not be a Russian asset by choice, which could be 'cool', but instead as a result of damaging kompromat, that is not so 'cool'.

Trump is well able to keep secrets.

Hard to believe it would come true with such speed. The MAGA are already screaming that Europe is run by islamists and transexuals (how both things can be true is a puzzle but then….. we can add 'Doublethink'

His inability to know when he is being played is what makes him the perfect asset!!

He is convinced he's a genius so as long as he thinks he came up with the idea or theory , he'll run with it forever without questioning its origin or accuracy..

Only the middle ground and the lightest of (eggs, petrol prices) MAGA are reachable. Hard MAGA have careened into Jim Jones/Heaven's Gate territory. They are beyond evidence, beyond the evidence of their own eyes. Even as the salt water rushes down their throats their last dying gurgles will be "climate hoax….glug glug".

I just had to go down the Natalie Harp rabbit hole, the story intrigued me. Jeepers that woman is deranged, the comparison to Glenn Close's character in "Fatal Attraction" is not far off the mark.

Right now he’s not Donald Trump he’s America - a totally different ball game -whilst I agree he’s made terrible business decisions through the years - that only impacted either himself, some idiot investors or local suppliers etc - now he has been given the “right” to negotiate on americas behalf on the world stage - I don’t care if he’s an “idiot” - he needs to be taken seriously nevertheless - calling him an idiot or ignoring him just won’t work

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 29,610 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

    a) It is terrible negotiating strategy and it isn't working. Particularly as he has lost what little temperance he had and is attacking everyone at once.

    b) It makes the other side take America far less seriously. It just makes them try to appease an infant

    c) It is impossible to move to relationship-based negotiation once you have done this

The UK media are tying themselves up in knots over Starmer's visit to see Trump panicking about what should be said and the press conference etc.

For foreign leaders it's really not that complicated. You show up, you kiss the ring and you go home.

Let's see what EU reply with - they will take this seriously no matter how it’s presented to them - they will separate the real issues from the “noise”

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 29,610 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

Of course they will take it seriously. A child playing with a firearm is still dangerous and you have to figure out the best way to handle them.

The problem the EU have, much like Canada, is that there simply are no real issues. It is a temper tantrum.

It is still a dreadful "tactic" and the US will come out of his tenure far weaker than it went in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,424 ✭✭✭✭astrofool

Simple example is Canada. Got nothing other than what was promised other than a "we'll really promise" support and now it will be very easy for future Canadian leader to stick it to the US for whatever reason, even if it causes Canadians some hardship.

US consumption per head is already multiples of other countries, them highlighting this means they risk having to reduce their consumption to comparable figures. This is reflected in their trade in-balances and the trust the world has in US security and $, if they went with a trade balance, their consumption and thus qualify of life would nosedive. trump trying to run USA as a business (when he is already an awful businessman) could be catastrophic and I suspect he won't be around to see the mess.

Consumption like this isn't possible anymore:

We’ll wait and see- if he bites off his nose to spite his face then it won’t end well for everyone - I’m reading the threats simply as a way for him to strengthen Americas position and get “something” he can shout about to his MAGA fanboys - let’s hope it’s as simple as that but I’m not convinced it will be- I think he’s potential to hurt EU greatly in the short term - it’s already having impacts on new jobs and businesses - we can’t tolerate this position medium term no less some deadly tarrifs

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 29,610 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

He is literally not strengthening America's position. He is eroding it as more and more countries will try to insulate themselves from his madness going forward.

Wouldn't be so sure of that. The Macron visit was not a kiss the ring scenario. Trump ended up lampooned domestically and internationally cause Macron showed him up for being uninformed. The US behaving terribly towards long term allies is eroding relationships and it's gonna happen far faster this time round.

I think it's going to become progressively harder for ANY Irish people to profess a liking or affinity for Trump as his administration rolls on. He'd have no problem slapping a 25 percent tariff on our exports and he wants to raze Gaza. What is there for any Irish person to really like?

I have this weird feeling that if he does make a visit to Ireland, it will be solely to Northern Ireland, and that he will snub the 1st minister, and meet only with a delegation from the two big Unionist parties.

Not that I want to be giving the likes of the DUP any ideas, but Trump is probably the only US president in living memory who would be likely to really vocally be on their side. If they played their cards right, they could put a bee in his bonnet about the Northern Ireland protocol or even the GFA.

In other news, there's a call for Musk to go on the Daily show after Stewart went after DOGE on Monday.. Musk said he would if it was aired unedited and that's not a problem for Stewart since it's filmed in front of a live audience. I'd be surprised if Musk follows through on it though. He would really struggle against Stewart...

It's about as likely as his cage fight against Zuckerberg was to go ahead.

There's plenty of stupid Irish people who'll lick his boots clean regardless of what he does.

Starmer and UK clearly played a blinder there. The King invites Trump to UK for unprecedented 2nd State visit.

He'll probably stop here for a time during this 'UK' state visit, and still the Irish Patriots on twitter will unironically celebrate

To be fair, I think that shade of orange has been around since Charlie and the Chocolate Factory....
