I think he has been quoted multiple times saying he doesn't want to be considered for the role full time

    He's 42….

Unbelievable that he's even remotely capable of playing at that kind of level as on outside back at that age.

Not sure if anyone's interested but there's a pop up shop opened in the old Dun Laoghaire shopping centre selling old jerseys.

Felix Jones heading back to Rassie and SA

Just watched a few clips of Felix Jones in catching the sun documentary and it's beyond belief that he hasn't been brought back into the Irish System

La Rochelle have lost again. This time to Stade Francais who were bottom of the table. I think O'Gara's questioning of the squad last week was a way of trying to get a traction out of them and it failed.

Maybe he was approached and declined the invitation.

Watched the semi finalof rugby championchip highlights - Spain surprisingly beat Portugal. Would love to see rugby grow outside traditional small set of countrys . Ther was a very poor crowd at game , world rugby needs to do more than just expanding World cup numbers, and probable hidings , if they want to grwo game and increase world interest.

I think the smaller unions need to invest more in grass roots as well tbh. The game needs to be sold to kids at a young age. Get them hooked, it needs to be a cultural thing.

From World Rugby's perspective obviously they could try and increase the amount of tier one nations touring smaller tier two nations, but even if that became a yearly thing, it'd still only a few weekends a year. Obviously pie in the sky, but relegation in the 6 nations could do wonders for the likes of Spain or Gerogia, of course on the other hand, extremely damaging to whoever goes down. Maybe make it a 7 nations with the last spot for one of the new teams?

I agree, crowd seamed very small from video, similar to AIL , with a bit of decent marketing I'm sure they could have bumped up more interest. apart from Ireland, France, England, NZ and SA the game seams in trouble to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,731 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

    In trouble how ?

Would that match have gotten bigger crowds previously ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,850 ✭✭✭✭thebaz

with Portugal doing so well in last world cup, would have expected more against ther rivals in a semi final than a near empty stadium

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,731 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Okay. I took "being in trouble" to mean things were getting worse.

It is frustrating but it seems hard to break through for any small sport. You see the same in tier 2 hurling where counties doing well can't get the numbers because most fans still have a primary sport and the smaller sport is just something to follow on TV or in match reports. Outside of rugby players/staff I would say most people had a soccer team to go watch that day.

they've been a bit disappointing this season. Georgia hammered already. I do love the way they and Spain play the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,290 ✭✭✭PMC83

They play really exciting stuff, I'd love to see a the bulk of the Spanish team as a club with some foreign NIQs mixed in, playing in the urc. Similar to Los Jaguars and Sunwolves were in Super Rugby. Could potentially help the national team and also also give Spanish fans a team to get behind for the bulk of the year.

The South American teams have similar vibe to them, reminds of the best of French flair. Kills me that the Tier 1 teams are so determined to ignore them

Premier have picked up the rights to the Japan Rugby League One - they will only be showing it live in the UK for the moment, Irish viewers will get two games on delay on Premier 2 this weekend at any rate.

Man, London Irish can't catch a break, their new owner, Eddie Jordan passed away.

    RIP Eddie Jordan.

I'd like to see more regional 6 Nations/TRC style competitions in the world. I think the key to it would be annually playing neighbouring countries. If the game is to grow we need to stop considering Georgia or Spain for the 6 Nations and instead they should form their own leagues

    Spain/Portugal/Morocco/Gibraltar/Andorra

    Georgia/Azerbaijan/Armenia/Turkey

    Brazil/Paraguay/Bolivia/Uruguay/Chile

Forge a rivalry with your neighbours and you will get success I think. Argentina might even be better off with the South Americans

This has been explained to you before. Georgis dont need more games against spain portugal and vice versa. Rhey play each other enough. To improve they need more games against the rugby fhampionship and 6 nations sides. They have annual competition in europe which has promotion and relegation which allows any European side the potential to play in competition against any European country bar the top 6. Spain amd portugal playing andorra is pointless. Georgia playing azerbaijan is pointless. Georgia ate comfortably beating many sides miles better than their firect neighbours. They need more games against stronger sides ie sides jn the 6 nations and rugby championship.

That's exactly why I didn't suggests a competition between Spain, Portugal and Georgia.

My point is simply that playing the neighbouring countries is what fosters interest. Interest = attendance = money = development. You look at the progress from the Calcutta Cup - Tripple Crown - 5 Nations - 6 Nations or the 1872 cup. It started as neighbor countries played each other year-on-year

Similarly the Irish inter-provincials, the 1872 cup, even the Bledisloe Cup are all formats where this works and generates the interest

Adding Georgia to the 6 Nations or the RC would develop interests on the level of the Nations League and interest in that after 6 seasons is flat at best

We have the world cup for the small teams to play the big ones

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,991 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

I do think that the South American sides are good enough that having Argentina playing there as their main tournament is more realistic, if the money was right.

There could be potential for a new club league in Europe for some of the REC teams. Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Germany. Travel wouldn't be atrocious, and there's obviously lots of history there. Could even throw in some Italian teams

When people say the T1 nations need to help the T2 nations develop I think providing the money is exactly what we need to do

Not a bad shout on the club league but again misses the point of the countries being near each other. If you took 5 clubs from each of Portugal and Spain and let them loose into a league together I'd say you'd get some very interesting games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,547 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Except the world cup is only 4 or 5 weeks every 4 years. Georgia need games against top sides more than 5 weeks out of 208 weeks. You have to look beyond neighbours alone to develop the game. To improve teams ranked 11-20 in the world they need to play far more against teams ranked 1-10.

In fairness, Georgia have played Australia, Japan, Fiji and Italy in the last 12 months and play Ireland and South Africa this summer.

Oh dear I see this Middle East bid for the World Cup talk has started again.

It's on the Eggchasers YouTube channel

It's inevitable that the professional game will follow the money. France aside, the other Tier 1 nations don't generate enough income to grow their dependent Clubs. The biggest expense that Unions face is participation in the Rugby World Cup. Unions lose money in RWC years, so if someone opted to underwrite the entire cost of hosting a RWC & all the participating Unions costs it would boost Union finances hugely. Qatar could afford to do this. So, first a RWC & later the ECPR final & then an annual tournament. Can WR say no !. Of course they can, but only if there's another route.
