Buying a bike in France! Documentation.

    Hi,

    I am in the process of purchasing a bike in France and plan to drive it back to Ireland.

    I am unsure on what documents I require to get the bike VRT'd here and correctly exported. From my research I have found these two things:

    1. "Certificat d immatriculation". This seems to be the registration certificate. Do I just bring this back with me?
    2. "Certificat de cession d'un vehicule d'occasion (Formulaire 15776*02): This seems to be the certificate to transfer an used vehicle. Is this the correct form for exporting the bike? Buyer and seller fill it out and seller posts it off?

    You have to have the original French registration cert with you to register the bike.

    Do NOT let the seller keep it or you're going to be stuck in limbo when you get home.

    Hi, Yh I did, went well. Picked the bike up from Paris and drove it to Cherbourg. All round, great trip, only 2 days.

    hi I'm picking a second hand motorbike up on Saturday in France. can you confirm it was just the French log book you needed and the bill of sale to VRT the bike in Ireland ? did you require a COC or any other documentation from france .

    do you need to declare it to customs coming into the Ireland at the port ?

    You need the vehicle registration document, sale agreement and (for the seller) to fill in the form as in the link in my post (you can do it in advance). You may keep a copy for yourself, but that's not needed here at home to register the vehicle.
    You don't need to declare it to customs at the port. Keep the ferry ticket for VRT processes.

    Don't forget to swap out the headlight for a 'driving on the left' (UK, IRE) one once you get it home, or you may be dazzling all oncoming traffic with your 'Euro' headlight.

    Would totally depend on the bike I'd imagine but I'm not aware of any bikes that can adjust their headlight throw from right to left.

    Jumping on this bandwagon also as I'm looking into importing a Gen 2 S1000XR from a Motorrad dealer in Germany. I know their version of the log book is required for VRT, but is the CoC needed as well? VRT website says it is required if the bike hasn't been registered before but doesn't clarify if that means in the country it's being imported from or Ireland. I'm assuming it's the former, but just want to be sure.

    It's over 6 months old and over 6000km so should be just the VRT, right?

    You are correct re the CoC - you don't need it as the bike has been previously registered.

    On many bikes, no, the lens is different. I bought many BMW's in Germany for years, and the headlights were different (asymmetrical dip pattern).

    I'm not sure about projector/LED ones though - if it's a symmetrical dip, nothing to worry about.
