That's such a ridiculous road to go down. You just cant compare eras from generation to generation. The football is different, the pace of play is different, the style is different.

I remember Gordon Stracan in studio back in the day, this would have been the mid 00's and he used to be irritate at the diving and general state the game was in compared to the game he played back in the 80's and early 90's. The studios would have been full of guys like him.

Most of those players he is talking about would have spent half their time in the stands with suspensions if they were playing today

    ******

also the model of management has changed from an absolute ruler who made all transfer decisions (Alex and arsene) to an executive that shared the responsibility.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 342 ✭✭Dano650

No it's not. Look at the comment I replied too.He said the Klopp would have won 3 or 4 more league titles in any other era because he got 90+ points in a couple of seasons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 342 ✭✭Dano650

And most of the players playing today wouldn't have hacked playing against these guys because they are too fooking soft

    I think that's probably true.

But also, it's probably pointless to discuss!

Let's just enjoy this season - we don't need to talk about ifs and buts in other years - there's soccer on tonight, and tomorrow, and 10+ games each afterwards

Plenty to enjoy in the here and now

I don't what you were replying too, I just took you up on the issue where you stated one team would would dominate a certain era because of x, y and z. Which is absolutely impossible to quantify.

Points tallies are irrelevant unless you actually win the league. Only the team that finishes as champions gets the trophy the rest get fcuk all. Trophies are the only measure of how players/managers should be jjudged. 2nd place is the first loser.

Players are professionals, players adapt to the current environment.

Whatever the game dictates players to be, at that specific time, they will be.

You cannot compare the eras - different things being asked of players then and now.

I think Utd would of been way better off if Fergie's ego didn't get in the way over the Rock of Gilbrator fiasco. Then the likelihood is that the Galziers wouldn't own United today. Probably a massive sliding doors moment in the clubs history. All over a horse.

that’s obviously not true. You can only control your own points, not anyone else’s. Declaring them irrelevant because of circumstances beyond anything in your own club is a bit nonsensical.

Obviously winning trophy’s is the goal of all teams, but points are a great benchmark by which you can grade the week in week out quality of a team in a season - especially in the context of a side with 130 charges of cheating against them.

That was a pie in the sky figure quoted to deter offers from Arsenal in January, but it has since been reported that there is an agreement with his agent that he can leave in the summer if they don't qualify for the Champions League.

Arsenal/Liverpool would more than likely do a deal in the £80-90M range but I would think both clubs would want to offer players in exchange to reduce the overall outlay.

I'm basing it on them paying 70m for him, him improving and Newcastle no longer in need of money for PSR. Shearer is also adamant that it'll be 150m needed to get him.

Now maybe they'll deal at 80/90m + a player in exchange but I honestly don't see him leaving this summer.

I love how we all decided to pick teams in another country to support while going up, most of us picking the likes of Arsenal, United or Liverpool, and now get to debate how winning trophies is the only thing that matters

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,678 ✭✭✭Talisman

Newcastle didn't pay £70M for him, it was reported in Spain as €70M including add-on clauses. They were willing to make an offer that exceeded the €65M release clause so that they wouldn't have to pay Real Sociedad the full amount up front to complete the transfer. The fee was approximately £60M including add-ons.

Not sure if this should be in the ireland thread but it's great to see Jake o brien getting a run of matches with Everton. Even better that they're going great guns and he's playing well too.

Matt doherty consistently in the wolves team as part of a back 3. Almost certain they'll stay up. bar a winning run from Ipswich or Leicester.

My grandparents emigrated from Cork to London in the 1940s. When Frank O'Farrell signed for West Ham from Cork United he became good friends with my grandfather. My grandparents used to take in young Irish players that joined London clubs particularly West Ham and help them settle. Years later O'Farrell managed Man Utd and asked my uncle who was living in Manchester if he'd be willing to do something similar for the young players that joined the club.

My grandfather was always adamant that Irish people living in England should only support West Ham or Man Utd because they properly looked after the young Irish players. Of course he was biased in his opinion and for his sins he raised a bunch of Chelsea supporters. 🤣 The youngest son was the rebel of the family and he chose to support Liverpool because the club wasn't in London and there was a rivalry between the cities of Liverpool and Manchester. My parents weren't football fans and as soon as I was old enough he indoctrinated me.

Two and half minutes to rule out a goal by a knee cap. Offside rule with var is ridiculous

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 674 ✭✭✭JohnySwan

Ah come on, the two can't be compared, obviously.

The point was that there's usually a resetting and rebuilding to be done after a successful, big personality leaves a club.

Jesus it really is painful watching players go down slapping the ground or screaming or that weird Booyakasha hand gesture when they are pretending they are injured. Incredibly hard to watch.

All this talk about teams from now and teams from the 70’s, 80’s or 90’s. The one thing that is never posed is - who’s referring the games and under which decade of ‘rules’ ?

I can only imagine if we are using a 70-80’s referee then about 1% of modern day players could cope with it.

Important win for Chelsea, even if it is against a relegation team. Hopefully Liverpool and Spurs can do us a couple of favours tomorrow night now.

Palmer's form is a massive worry now though.

Watched Chelsea a few times this season and even though they won tonight I can see a BIG problem for them is players who won’t pass at the right time.

Every one of their attackers (Neto seems willing to pass) wants to score and it’s costing them. A couple more passes in the final third, all season, and they’d be currently top 4.

Major blow for Villa, they will struggle to contend for a CL place now. Might not be in Europe at all next season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,952 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

There is only 5pts between 3rd and villa in 10th

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,592 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Yes but several of those teams have 2 games in hand and all the rest have one in hand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,678 ✭✭✭Talisman

They haven't been great for the past month, the result against Liverpool flattered them. They lost to Wolves and struggled to a draw against 10 man Ipswich. Crystal Palace is a tough away game and once again Villa weren't up for it.

Big few games tonight. A Liverpool win could be another big result as you'd fancy Arsenal to drop points. A Liverpool loss and an Arsenal win would stoke up the title embers for a few weeks. Two tough games. Spurs v City could be a goal fest, for either team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,919 ✭✭✭✭8-10

I fancy Arsenal to completely turn over Forest, they look wrecked. Newcastle scored 4 quickly and easily against them at the weekend. Liverpool will concede so they need to continue the run of scoring at least 2 goals in 18 of their 19 home games this season (Loss to Forest the other so it's 17 in a row with at least 2 goals scored at home since that game in early September)

Interesting that Arsenal kick off first

I'll go Arsenal 3-0 and Liverpool 2-1 to keep the gap

Arsenal aren't scoring 3 against Forest. They barely have a front line. Forest will beat Arsenal
