Even if it’s permanent, kids and family films are ten a penny on every streaming service under the sun, so is it really that big a loss? I know, not everyone subscribes to streaming services.

In a rare deviation of type here is my defence of their decision, it's possibly a smart cost cutting move from them. As you said, they know, almost everyone has access to a streaming service. They still had to buy the rights to the movie. 28 years ago, to watch a movie on saturday evening they were the only show in town.

It's 10pm news not its 11pm news. There were times when there were only 20mins left to the film and RTÉ would cut to the news.

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

I can remember staying up to watch films as a kid with my parents and this drove me mad.

You'd have lost interest in the film by the time it came back on.

I've moved away from defending RTÉ but "smart costing cutting move" … from what I can gather from the annual report RTÉ ring fence imports and sporting rights to €25m each, there is a section in the AR each year outlining this, only noticed it this year. So those programmes are still being bought, regardless.

While IMO Their reasoning for putting the Big Big Movie on was that most people watch the entertainment shows on BBC/ITV and we can't be bother to compete with them !

They weren't the only show in town.

RTE bean counters OR some common sense from RTE management? I am going to go with the former tbh.

You are right of course. Virgin Media on Saturday evening is a direct copy of UTV, which lots of people seem to enjoy.

RTE: We could try and compete, or just put any crap on and I bet some people will still watch it.

Virgin Media TV have Want to be a Millionaire on every Saturday and Sunday on repeat and the conclusion is "just put on any crap, and people will watch".

And watch they will. Remember when TV3 put on reruns of Saturday Night Takeaway and beat UTV Ireland who were showing new episodes at the same time as ITV.

Returns with Despicable Me 3, next week.

While their new line up saw repeats of Raised by the Village, which continues next week.

Also it's a tax on the poor. It shouldn't be on RTE at all because it's gambling.

Thinking about it, VAT, PRSI, Excise Duty, PAYE are all in a sense going to "good causes" and the Government deciding on the tax spending is democratically elected. The Lotto is a scam.

I think the OP was the only person who ever said it was.

However, this post probably sums up the real situation…

Yes, RTÉ dressed it up as a new line up for the new year, and it was quickly flooded with Repeats and then brought back to the original pre-new year line !
