There's a lot of Limerick Leader hyberbole in using the words ''shopping mall' to describe this proposed development.

The site is the empty plot at the corner of Thomas St and Anne St. And the proposed units are tiny. 9 units ranging from 24 sqm to 75 sqm.

I hope the council tell them to come back with something that will attract more that vape and phone repair shops.

9 units is nuts. That site is tiny and why do we need 9 more units on a street that already has a bunch of vacancies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,073 ✭✭✭Vanquished

An absolute joke of a proposal. One that I'd imagine has been submitted in an attempt to keep the plot off the vacant sites/derelict sites list. I had a look at the drawings and it's the cheapest, most unimaginative design possible.

The worst thing about this is that the owner of the site is extremely wealthy and has a massive portfolio of properties in the city centre. So they could develop a very attractive scheme here if they really wanted to or if they really cared about the city. I've said it before but Limerick is plagued by a clutch of wealthy property owners who show nothing but contempt for the city and have no ambition or vision to do anything positive with their wealth or property assets!

Mungret College and 26 hectares around it are owned by Limerick City and County Council. It is managed as part of the Limerick 2030 portfolio. No concrete plans at present. Hopefully something will be done soon before it starts to deteriorate now that the Community College have moved to their new home. Amazing that the alt-right shower aren't out there blathering about immigrants and IPAS or praying for a bit of self combustion.

Typical, I had heard rumours this morning but wasn’t aware of the article on the leader. Looks like a fairly haphazard plan alright.

apparently a “leading fashion retailer” is going into the Debenhams building

Typical overhyping from Nick Rabbits. Advanced negotiations isn't the same as a done deal on the retailer.

The most important part of that story is that they have a contractor appointed and they're not far off submitting compliance documents, so work on the aparthotel will hopefully begin in the near future.

Stuff like this only adds to the negativity around when it turns out that "major fashion retailer" is sports direct and not Gucci or whatever other weird hopes people dream up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,174 ✭✭✭✭Berty

Honestly the Sports Direct store in Mahon Point upstairs is actual quite an impressive store. It isn't all just clothing either, and downstairs there was a Frasers. Both stores together were quite impressive.

I've nothing against them but I can see the kind of comments that would pop up if it happened.

It literally happened to the same building when people found out it was going to be an aparthotel and not a Hilton or something.

If this deal does come to pass and the rumoured tenant is correct then it would be a significant win for the city centre. Probably the most notable retail arrival in over 15 years.

The retailer is on a major European expansion and investment drive at the moment and it was highly likely they would have acquired a unit in the Crescent shopping centre. But to potentially get them into the city centre would be a most pleasant surprise. I've often bemoaned the almost complete absence of quality European retailers in Limerick city centre so this would be a major step in the right direction.

    What's the rumour?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,817 ✭✭✭✭banie01

They're installing an M&S foodhall onto a 3 of the new monorail carriages with Debenhams as both the station and ultra chic clothes department 😁

People need to stop seeing a shop opening as a "win" or a political statement about the city.

This kinda stuff is exactly what I was talking about because when this ends up not being the shop of your dreams that you were never promised you will be on here full of negativity.

From yesterdays Metropolitan council meeting, a planning application for this is due to be sent to ABP in the coming weeks.

Also they expect a contractor to be on site for the Golf Links Road widening by the end of the year.

Its no wonder we have a housing crisis in this country when you have councillors voting to cut a development in half in favour of appeasing a few locals. No prizes for guessing which councillors have voted against it. They have form and previous doing this.

The location is fitting for a multi storey apartment scheme. Close to good bus route connections and the Raheen Business park.

Things like this really highlight how old fashioned and closed minded and just thick Ireland still is, it's really like father ted the way these type of people go on. They also reduced the height of the south court hotel which means even fewer homes for renters in that development as well. These people are scum of the earth.

Why are they pushing ahead with a station in Moyross? It makes no sense and will take longer to get to the city centre than bus, given that the route is from Moyross, through Corbally, through Rhebogue, past the Parkway, along Childers Road before joining the Limerick Junction line coming into Colbert station. The term all around the world for sport comes to mind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,660 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

It's not to get people from Moyross to the city centre.

It's to get people to Limerick quicker. TUS students for instance won't need to do that big loop around the Parkway you mentioned.

Getting off and switching to bus or bike for the city centre will benefit some people also.

I'm not a huge fan of the plan but those are the reasons. And if the government want to build me a train station I'm not gonna kick up much of a fuss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,331 ✭✭✭source

That's route the only track from Moyross takes into the city. That is the only route anyone can take on the train. Literally the only people it will benefit is students who need to get to that side of town. That's a massive investment if that's all that will benefit.

It will suit anyone heading to Ennis, Galway or even other routes via Colbert Station.

I don't see it as means of getting to town via public transport

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,660 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

It is not to get people from Colbert to Moyross or Moyross to Colbert. Buses do that better.

It's for people not from Limerick.

And it's not really a massive investment in the grand scheme of things. When you look at the amount of money spent or lost on tax breaks or other initiatives during the life of a government it's small and at least we will have some tangible infrastructure to point to which in my life at least seems rare enough with government spending.

There is an interesting thread dedicated just to Moyross station where all this has been gone through already if you are looking for more info.

The Spanish retailer Mango. Unclear how much space they would take. The ground floor area alone is 2,100 sq.m. Their flagship Henry Street, Dublin store is smaller than that and their Patrick's Street Cork store is significantly smaller still.

The power washing of Clancys Strand boardwalk has stopped mid finish. Is this because the wood is showing up as rotten? Has an engineer been pulled in to evaluate?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,660 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

At a guess they will only take the section bracketed by the street front windows that was recently used at Christmas.

Doubt it will be upstairs or the extension where Roches grocery section was.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,836 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

Would Mango really be a 'significant win' for the city centre? It's just another a fast fashion shop that sources its clothing from Asia.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,836 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

I saw it posted elsewhere that Conack Construction signs have appeared in the windows of Debenhams, so it looks like the renovations are about to start there.

A poster on another forum took this photo of the works to link the existing Bloodmill Road with the new stretch of road built by Kirkland Investments.

Lidl has a banner at the site stating that the new road opens on March 14th.

The pic isn't showing, but I'm assuming this is the pic you're referring to.

Not sure if "busses do that better"

Busses in the city are regularly late, stop at nearly every stop along a route and are heavily influenced by traffic jams in the area. A train from Colbert to Moyross would likely take between 5-10 minutes, the train service is usually on time and doesn't get affected by rush hour traffic

The main people to benefit from this station will be the students of LIT, those directly living in the area and Thomond Park matchday crowds

Agree on the costs, or rather the cost:benefit ratio would be very favourable
