I know Bin Laden was across the border in Pakistan when he was caught and killed. I never said he was in Afghanistan when he was killed. Bin Laden originally hid in Afghanistan, but he and later escaped to neighboring Pakistan. In 2011, Bin Laden was killed by U.S. special operations forces who took off on their mission from neighbouring Afghanistan and who returned immediately afterwards to Afghanistan. Had the US not invaded Afghanistan, they would not have been able to do that.

It is very unlikely I think that Trump will still be President in 10 years, but given that foreign multi-nationals , mostly American, pay nearly all the Corporation tax collected in this country, and directly and indirectly employ probably hundreds of thousands, why insult and poke the American bear when they are so good to us? And have traditionally been good for us and the western world, in different ways? Not saying America is perfect - far from it - but I still prefer it to China or Russia.

The US spends 3.4% of its GDP on defence. The UK 2.3%, and Germany and France less than that.

Ireland's defence budget in 2024 (€1.29 billion) equates to 0.24%  of our GDP; Average of 38 European countries is 1.74%.

It annoys the Americans very much, and Trump in particular, that they are always the ones coughing up most.

Yes, money is important to Trump, in his eyes and for his ego he wants to make America great again. Being prudent with the large sums it gives to other countries is part of his plan. With American debt now so high, more than a few people in his party think he has a point.

Not saying he is right or wrong, but it is important to know what their point of view is, and why.

Trump might be as mad as a hatter but would you prefer if American multinationals did not pay nearly all our corporation taxes collected?

Or if China or Russia ruled the world?

I was referring to how much they committed to Ukraine, not what they allocated to their own defence.

It's time for European countries to look at disconnecting from reliance on the US arms industry. The US has shown it cannot be trusted. Increasing self reliance and looking at grippen, mirage and typhoon instead of f16s and f35s would seem to provide more long-term security for both initial supply and long-term mainenace.

Similarly for any other US weapons systems, a European alternative is needed to ensure we are not relying on, what is for now, an unreliable single source.

Friedrich Merz is likely to become the next leader in Germany and he's previously stated he'd send Taurus missiles to Ukraine. Fingers crossed!

No, it's Trump being nothing but an immoral grifter. You can whataboutery all you want but that's just objective fact.

Very true and that is before you get into who actually owns this land already which is another can of worms. Javier Blas at Bloomberg did an article about it all a few days ago.

Trump is a bit like that with his drill baby drill utopia. He want's oil to go down to $40 a barrel so inflation comes down but does not understand it costs $50 a barrel to extract shale oil and will end up bankrupting the oil companies instead.

I was chatting with a Ukrainian friend yesterday, and he pointed out that interoperability of weapons in the Ukraine will be a mess, should the US withdraw supplies. German barrels don't fit on French pistols and so on. Apparently, RuZZia found out the hard way that North Korean weapons don't interoperate either, and also that much of what NK supplied in terms of weapons were broken and disfunctional USSR materiel.

Can you comment on the interoperability issues facing Ukraine if it gets weapons built in Europe? Will the weapons work together? Thanks.

Your right, I could very well see Trump asking martin to return the apple money to America in front of the cameras, and I cannot see the rest of Europe having our backs on that issue, they are probably hoping and praying they do not get invited over.

Ukraine should pay 500bn to America, but they should fine America 1000bn for breaking the Budapest agreement. So America owes Ukraine 500bn. They could pay this by sending jets, ammo, oil, etc etc. It's a beautiful deal, a beautiful deal. I love a beautiful deal. Really I do. It's a beautiful deal.

It looks like history is starting up again.

Well it is because you wouldn't join if you weren't willing to agree to that aspect of it.

Europe has been pathetic over the entire Russia/Ukraine war you've had the largest economy in Western Europe (Germany) deciding to outsource it's energy supply to Russia and then sneer at anyone who correctly pointed out that it was a stupid idea.

Europe has essentially outsourced it's defense to the USA which is really not a good idea as it's understandable why the Americans may not be so keen on their tax payer money being used to defend a continent over 3000 miles away.

Yep. The US at best is no longer a reliable ally. At worst they are compromised by Russia.

Europe needs to plan to the future and for right now. Time to stand up and invest in Europe and buy European.

It also may mean some very uncomfortable situations emerging. China for example. Huge human rights abuses, Taiwan issue, their ocean expansion. But China is no threat to Europe currently. Perhaps we could get them to make deals with us rather than US and Russia.

I hate to say it and it's fcuking sick, but the lesson from this war is invest in a nuclear stockpile. It's the only way to keep numerically superior country out. Worked for North Korea.

All eyes on Kursk. Slava Ukraini.

And at the same meeting, I could see Trump asking our Taoiseach why did Harris the Tanaiste insult Trump and the American electorate by calling Trump an awful ghoul? They want their companies and tax dollars home, as they see it.

And as Martin hands over the bowl of Shamrock, Trump may joke is this what each of the hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees are going to get when they arrive at one of Predident Higgins houses when they arrive here, seeing as we are so fond of them?

Why should Trunp get a bowl of shamrock and each of the poor Palestinians do not?

One of the lads I know who works in an American multinational here joked the other evening that if one of our politicians publically handed Trump a bowl of Shamrock or something, Trump would have every right to jokingly tell his secret service guys to check it for anthrax or something. Could see it happening.

Pathetic is anti-western vatniks whining about Europe's contributions.

So, more money than the US. And, recent pledges of even more.

Maybe the best thing that can happen for Ukraine is for the US to be sidelined, ending the uncertainty of their compromised POTUS meddling with them.

I hadn't heard about that, but Google is telling me it was "an awful gowl". In case you're not Irish, that is a bit different. Probably not as harsh.

Anyway, I though the right wing Yanks were all for just telling it like it is, not sparing the "snowflake's" feelings and all that jazz? Or was that another lie?

Did they just mean they are all for being nasty and bullying to everyone, saying exactly what they like and suffering no consequences for it but free to rain down harsh consequences on anyone who dares respond?

Trump could be called a lot worse things. He is awful, and from European pov his admin. is worse than we all feared it would be.

I think JD Vance compared him to Hitler at one time, didn't he? In fact a lot of those who he later moulds into his toadies, had run ins with him in the past.

If Trump is so keen on peace, I wonder what is his attitude to this: From BBC Live just now:

Largest single drone attack of the war, says Ukrainian officialpublished at 11:2111:21

Going back to the overnight drone attack on Ukraine, officials say 267 drones were launched, calling it "a record number for one attack".

It is the most drones launched in a single attack since the Russian invasion began on 24 February 2022, says Yuriy Ignat, a spokesman for Ukraine's Air Force Command.

More than half of the drones were shot down by anti-aircraft fire, he adds.

I'm all for USA being sidelined and kept away from having anything to do with europe. But why then have all the Europeans been in a tizzy about Trump not being committed to Ukraine when they just could have easily told him to piss off we don't need your help we'll fix it ourselves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,278 ✭✭✭brickster69

Looks like another dispute is happening. This time at the United nations where the US is going to present a basic proposal to the security council asking support for peace talks in the morning before a general assembly vote later on.

Ukraine's proposal is being asked to be withdrawn but they refuse.

alternatively the EU could request the removal of all US military bases from the EU and open up engagement with China to broker a peace deal that supports the EU China and the Ukraine. Let MAGA smoke that one.

Vance can't stand Trump. It's a relationship of convenience. Same goes for Melania.

Ukraine officials saying the EU not enough and they need US backing… cue increased funding by the EU.

This is a war of survival and if they have to mildly insult Europe to up their game so be it.

What part of the Budapest agreement did the United States (or the UK) break?

Every year, no matter who the president is, the shamrock is disposed of immediately after the photo op by the secret service as a potential bio hazard.

It's far too late for Taurus missiles and I suspect Merz won't follow through on it now that the emphasis is on ending the war via "negotiation". The US and Europe did not do enough when it might still have made a difference, and we're at a different stage of the conflict already

Guaranteeing Ukraine security in return for giving up nukes?

Providing security. Yes they sent (drip-fed) weapons but Ukraine is not secure. Leaving them to defend themselves against a bigger army is not security.

It looks like history is starting up again.
