Big shout out to PFP. Excellent off the bench last night going both ways. Added and extra dimension to us when he came on

Gavin Coombes got 2 chances to show his talents for Ireland in 2021, 9 mins v Japan and the full 80 v USA in a 71-10 win when it really was hard to assess anyone in a one sided game- Doris was at 6 that day and has played in every International since. Has any other Irish or any other nationality player played their countries last 42 internationals. Did we need to play our first choice backrow player in every single game, NO.

The Irish Management are at fault in this, obviously they had issues with Coombes, should they have tried to develop a 23 year old No 8 who had scored 15 tries in 22 games (17 starts) for his province. Of course they should.

As it stands at the moment Doris + Conan are the 1st & 2nd choice No 8's, but the Irish coaches have not been developing a 3rd choice No 8, yet they have been doing this in virtually every position. Since Coombes played his 89 mins, Ireland have capped another 24 players and countless previously capped players earned further caps.

For example, at out half, four players gained first caps, Crowley, H Byrne, C Frawley + Prendergast.

Has Coombes had dips in form, yes, but very few players will be getting 8/10 in every game.

Did he deserve another opportunity, yes, very few No8's have his scoring record, 49 tries in 115 games for Munster, Doris + Conan have 53 tries between them in 249 games. People say" that's only part of the game, there are a lot of gaps in his game".

Looking at the URC stats for the season, 3rd highest no. of successful carries, 5th highest offloads, 9th highest carries, 3rd highest tackles made.

    Good post

UrC stats are meaningless when your comparing a player who plays every week in URC against players who don't.

So are try scoring records When your comparing players who are playing at different levels. That's no disrespect to Coombes but your talking about the Lions #8 from 2021 who is currently playing some of the best rugby of his career and potentially the Lions #8 and captain for 2025 who had been outstanding in the last few years and is now Irish captain.

I dont see what the Irish Management are at fault for? They have been developing players across the park and we do have issues at LHP and to a lesser extent at Scrum Half but we most certainly don't have issues in the backrow currently. Timoney had been around squads for the last while and he can fill gaps there if ever needed. So that's Doris, Conan and timoney albeit Timoney hasn't played much.

Add in Baird in recent seasons, plus the more recent additions of Izuchukwu and Cian Prendergast to squads etc.

but he played somewhat badly in an A game against a NZ XV in 2022 so he doesnt deserve another chance apparently

even though pretty much the whole team played badly that game

He does have another chance. He’s in Ireland camp right now.

i get what you mean, but in an actual game though

for example, every member of the pre RWC23 training squad got at least a couple of minutes in the warm ups apart from Coombes and Kieran Treadwell (I guess Sexton didnt either but that was a different story). Maybe they were involved in the 'game' against Portugal but that doesnt really count for much either

to be honest, as much as i would have loved for coombes to have been in the original squad, i do think conan has been playing really well and doris is obviously doris so he didnt really fit in. the problem i had/have is that he never got a look in even when conan was injured/off form

There was stories of coombes wanting to show up to Ireland camp after Munsters 2023 URC win wearing a Champions hat or something but was told not to. Would AF have been happy with that attitude?

he was in the extended squad that summer 2023 And failed to get a look in so perhaps he didn't train particularly well. This was between 6n titles where a world cup took place, followed by a SA tour were others such as Doris etc have been consistently outstanding.

On the back of Covid and the financial implications of that and a RWC year with no AI the IRFU have been lucky that the team has done so well on the pitch. That is important, look at Wales and the implications of that £20m covid loan the WRU took out which their clubs are hamstrung by.

Two 6n titles, huge income via AI and a high profile tour to SA is good for attracting sponsors.

ive heard so many different versions of that story:

-he wanted to bring the actual trophy into camp

-he wanted to wear a t-shirt/ hat/ hoody saying 'urc champions'

-as above but saying 'sorry leinster'

-he wanted to bring his medal to camp

-he wanted to wear his medal to training

im sure there is some truth in it, maybe he tried to bring the medal with him, but id be slow to believe anything else to be honest.

would andy farrell have been happy? id say he probably wouldnt give a sh1t either way and is a good enough coach to know that it wasnt that big of a deal either way in itself. if he (or anyone else) had turned up wearing a la rochelle jersey or something like that it would be different (as it would have been genuinely mean spirited then), but a bit of light hearted joking about munster's success would likely have been taken in the right way by the coach (and the other players)

maybe he didnt train well but it is still odd that almost every other squad member got gametime and coombes didnt

i dont really know what the rest of what you are saying has to do with it though all the same, yes its great that the irfu are doing well but does that mean coombes shouldnt be in the squad?

Craig CASEY was quoted as saying something about the hat. I'd be fairly sure the Leinster players would have congratulated the Munster players on the URC win when they came into camp but given everything AF says and does about a happy family driven environment, would a player bringing provincialism into Ireland camp go down well?

Coombes obviously didn't make an impression for whatever reasons, so got no gametime. Other fringe players have been in camps over the last while and got little/no gametime.

After Covid the team has largely been the best team for every game. Doris has played the last 42 for example. The success post covid has been on the back of fairly consistent team selections.

Farrell doesn't seem like the sort to deprive himself of a good player over some dressing room bantz, I would guess this story (which I hadn't heard) has grown legs over the last two years and has nothing to do with squad selection.

Speaking of Casey, it's great to see him back training with Ireland, would be a massive addition for the European knockouts.

If anything like that happened I'd have expected the coaches and/or leadership group to have pulled him aside for a chat, and him to realise his error, hold his hand up in the dressing room, and apologize to the group. I sincerely doubt any professional provincial player is dumb enough to risk their Ireland selection over something silly like that.

Coombes is in a difficult spot. There are two top class eights in the squad both of whom can comfortably move to six if needed off the bench. We have lots of players who can play lock or six, and players who comfortably cover the entire back row well.

Our gameplan has a preference for players who cover a lot of ground east - west across the pitch providing midfield options but popping up on the wing as a pacy running threat two attacking shapes later. Coombes has lots of skill but he plays a more tight game naturally.

I really like him as a player and would like to see him get another shot, but I think he's a bit of a luxury for Ireland unless he becomes a serious threat to Conan's position as second choice eight.

Do posters genuinely think the Training Camps are that sterile that the head coach has to block bringing a player into camp because it might cause offense to other players because of a bit of fun?

I'd worry about those players when they leave the bubble of professional rugby.

Made up stories in a lot cases, there is a perception void there at present.

Players look devoid of any character or personality & also are strangled from projecting any personality imo.

That's across all sports imo, even the GAA

The characters are gone & it's all v sterile

How many players now look like they are enjoying the game

Zebo always played with a smile on his face & looked liked he enjoyed the moment, RG usually has grin on him😁

Looking better for Munster chances with La Rochelle continuing to perform poorly in the top 14 with a big loss to Lyon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,415 ✭✭✭letowski

I think Munster have a pretty decent team when the injury situation is reasonably healthy. It was good to see Casey back training in the photos this week, though I could see Murray starting the game given he is a perfect away day 9. Hopefully Loughman and Nankivell will be fit. I was hoping too one of our tighthead locks, Klyen or Edogbo might make it back, given the weight of the LAR pack but it doesn’t seem likely at this point unfortunately. I think we’ll give it a good go down there nonetheless.

La Rochelle have Racing92 (13th) at home and Stade Francais (12th) away over the next two rounds of the Top14, so it's quite likely they will spring back up the table and be coming into the Euro knockouts with a bit of momentum. After the 6N they will have Castres (6th) at home and Clermont (5th) away before facing Munster at home.
They'll probably go all out for the Castres match, and rotate out a few important players for the Clermont match.
Basically, I'd expect La Rochelle to be fully loaded and confident for our match.

2 friends of mine went through the Leinster academy process up to pro contracts with Leinster, 1 still there, 1 at another club. Leinster have a person or team of people that come in from when they are in the academy to go through how to answer questions in interviews, how to side step questions, how to say a point without it making headlines etc.

Presume this is the same all over now so we see less and less personality in sport. 1 of the above players is unbelievable craic and has a brilliant personality, but nobody would ever think it from watching or hearing him speak in public.

Irish Examiner saying JJ is coming home, got a two year deal, great for him. Probably means Billy Burns didn't work out.

That's a surprising move, but he has to be better than Burns.

would prefer Jake Flannery or Ben Healy to

    Come back.

Happy to see JJ coming back, Burns is woeful at present, we are not benefiting from his supposed experience. I do hope he manages to turn his form around, as he can be a decent player.

JJs return must be some kind of record, a second contract return after years away?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,599 ✭✭✭Brief_Lives

I think there is a coaching aspect to JJs return contract.

JJ has done well for us at Connacht. He's probably been our most reliable outhalf. If we had better coaching around defensive exits and territorial kicking last season he'd likely have managed us around the pitch very well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,981 ✭✭✭✭mahoney_j

terrible signing ….hecwas only good enough in fits and starts and plagued by an ankle consistent game throughout his career ….he is older and more injury prone now as well ….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 26,512 ✭✭✭✭phog

I don't know, the only thing for me was he got two years but maybe he wasn't interested in anything less. He looked great for Connacht before his injury but as you say, he has had injuries before too and we'll need someone while Crowley is away with Ireland

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,981 ✭✭✭✭mahoney_j

biggest problem is and always has been he’s just too inconsistent

I like the signing too as he has position versatility at a replacement. Gives us the option of going 6-2 on the bench. He’s still playing at a decent level too.
