Yes now you are saying something different people can see the difference

Its literally in the post you made a point of saying you quoted. "Why Southgate or Potter? Why not just Amorim do that?".

I guess if you think its all just "nonsensical rants" you perhaps don't necessarily read my posts fully.

I don't agree with the stop gap stuff - I think you can and should build a squad independent of a manager these days. You should aim to be in a position where you can seamlessly transition between managers ala Liverpool with Klopp and Slott. A manager may end up becoming a stop gap because he fails to meet expectations ultimately or for other reasons, but it shouldn't be in the plan.

I think the briefings at the time RA was hired indicated that the hierarchy thought the squad was fairly suited to his system and that was a key reason why they hired him. But, if that is the case, that assessment looks to be wrong unless they think 3/4 additions of the right profiles can make it all click? I'm not sure they can be confident of that after everything we've seen.

That seems a hard one to believe.

As others have pointed out, forget positions and form, just from a pace and physicality point of view the squad is really badly suited to what Amiron wants. I don't know how anybody looks at the workrate and pressing from the past few years and thinks those players are suited to his system.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 398 ✭✭Eleusis

I thought personally it was just a matter of trying harder off the ball and then the players could be more suited to his system. . But now I know they just really can't be assed. Bruno literally the only one that works hard and it's such a pity he's too knackered doing everyone else's runnin, so he can't do what hes best at -creating and scoring.

It was such a contrast seeing how hard that Celtic team work Vs Bayern the other night. Made me so jealous to see forwards actually showing some intensity in closing people down. OMFG zirkzee is a statue off the ball and he's not the only one. . It's all unforgivable.

Players that don't work hard aren't suited to any (modern) system/style though

Ashworth apparently argued the opposite on Amorim, and I think I read that was an issue in the summer as well.

I do think they hoped Shaw would come back. And that Dalot would do better as a WB. and that mount would come back. and that mainoo would suit one of the CM positions and, most importantly (imo) that we would get more out of Rashford and Hojlund.

Whether those are failures of Amorim or the club, that up to you to decide for yourself.

I'm bitterly disappointed over Rashford and Hojlund myself. I think something broke between rashford and the club over time, for various reasons. Hojlund I don't know, his confidence is in the ground but I think Amorim should be getting more from him and helping him more.

Mainoo I think should be doing more himself, needs to up his tempo/intensity - thats on him.

So I think on paper we had a squad that you could argue had a number of players that could look good - and they have failed to do so.

How much do you blame Amorim for that?

''Further background checks on Amorim’s style and relationship with his players had got those at the top of United enthusiastic about the prospect of bringing him to the club. They became confident his back-three formation could map onto the squad.''

    On paper..

    Yoro and Mazraoui suits RCB.
    Maguire and MDL suit CCB
    Martinez, Shaw suit LCB

Dalot suits RWB, as do Amad with the way Amorim plays.
LWB an issue but so was LB.

Mainoo and Ugarte for CM seems fine.
Case and Eriksen needed replacing regardless.

Rashford seems tailoer made for L10.
    Bruno R10.

Hojlund profiles well in style vs Gyokeres.

THe questiion marks and lack of depth was the same for 433 and 343 imo.

THe failure is lack of intensity, phyicality, speed. The same issues Wilcox had already identified (apparently)

And maybe, just maybe, Amorim present a style they want to play going forward, and they are prepared to take the pain to get there. But did think there would be less pain.

I think all managers have to deal with setbacks and things not going to plan all the time but the best ones find a way to adapt and work their way out of it. I think it was silly of Amorim to proclaim early on that he'll never deviate away from the 3-4-3. René Meulensteen questioned him on this a few weeks ago too.

The other thing that worries me is I actually thought I saw a little bit of progress in his system early on - away to Arsenal in the league for eg. You could see some control and decent build up in the first phase in that game. But it seems to me that since the first few games (enough of a sample for PL teams to study what Amorim is trying to do with the team), they have been figuring out how to stop the system at a faster rate than Amorim is able to tweak it to retain the necessary amount of unpredictability. Our performance levels have been gradually deteriorating imo, and that was before the injuries. I have major doubts as to whether Amorim is actually cut out for the PL at this moment in time and fear he is consistently getting out-thought by other PL managers.

The real problem is, and we have seen it over successive managers, is that the squad culture that emerged was one where when things were going your way you took all the glory but when things became difficult you hid and hoped they blamed the manager / Glazers / anyone else but you. And they have become mental midgets meaning in any adversity they crumble.

You will often hear players in interviews after a bad performance say "we need to improve" "we need to work better as a team" etc. What they actually mean is "its not me, its other peoples fault". And what we have seen is ultimately that behaviour has been rewarded. They manager is sacked, there is a short term improvement and they get a lucrative new contract before eventually retreating to blaming others when there is an inevitable decline.

What successful teams have are individuals who take individual responsibility. Even when their own individual performance is good, if the team is not performing well, they need to ask themselves "how can I help make this better". Instead we get players throwing their arms in the air when something goes wrong, a signal the "well its not my fault".

If you look at the squad and try to see whois worth keeping, from a mental attributes point of view, the list is short.

Plyers who have that mental fortitude and not apparent in the squad, I would say only Amad and Eriksen have shown that character and Eriksens legs are gone.

Of the rest, in a positive environment, Maguire, Deligt, Ugarte and Zirksee I think would have the right mental attributes - note, i am not referring to football ability.

And its too early to write off Mainoo, Yoro and Garnacho. The infection may as yet not be too deep. Dorgu is too new.

Other than that, as far as I am concerned if there was a way we could replace everyone else, I would be happy. If that was to mean going down a division, so be it.

Bruno is the best footballer, but worst offender in not taking individual responsibility. He actions are sayng "well I am doing my best, its these numpties". And from a purely footballing point of view he is ok most of the time. His actions help destroy the culture though.

Big game at the weekend, hopefully Collyer and Ugarte are back in, and I would start both.

Onana, Yoro, Maguire, MDL, Dorgu, Dalot, Collyer, Ugarte, Bruno, Garnacho, Zirkzee.
Will be interesting to see if any of the young midfielders - Kone, Scanlon, Moorehouse - are on the bench or if Eriksen and Casemiro will take those spots.
Mazraoui, Lindelof, Heaven, Case, Eriksen, Hojlund all good bets for the bench plus (at least… sigh) one keeper - meaning two spots for the likes of Chido and the others mentioned.

Behind a pay wall, but there's ways around that.... 😏 Don't think I'm allowed post specific helpful links on here.

Has Collyer won you over? I remember you were unsure on him in the summer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,143 ✭✭✭Rocket_GD

I can imagine it's more not wanting to see Casemiro trudge around more than anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,776 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

I think Bruno usually gets the nod ahead of Casemiro in CM anyway but I agree with Mitch, I'd much rather see Collyer start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,937 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Nope. Not at all. He runs, and thats about it.

    But we need that.

I'd prefer to see Bruno closer to goal, and then Collyer over Casemiro or Eriksen.

Hes impressed me more than I thought tbf but yeh the running is well needed.

And the Collyer change is how Amorim does look to adapt what the team is going.

The shape will, in 99% of cases remain the same basic 343, but the pressing configuration can change (to 442 - we haven't seen enough of this imo) but at Sporting he also adjusted what the team did by adjusting the players and their roles.

Wing Backs being the big one - changing from 'wrong foot side' to right foot side, or changing from attacking to defensive. Chaging the CMs from a 6 and an 8 crasher to two 6s.

Collyer coming in wouldn't be to do the same job Bruno was doing, but a more defensive role for a specific reason.

At wing back we basically have eff all options to change anythign either way, so it is what it is.

I know it's only three games, but Antony has scored more goals in February than United.

    Is the club cursed?

Do you know if he made those changes regularly at Sporting? And was it a feature of his early days, or was it something he brought in over time?

I think there's an argument for him to be making less changes (injuries aside) until there is some sort of foundation to build on. It's a new system / formation, that can be hard enough to change in itself. Adding variables like switching Dorgu and Dalot around, by bringing in Collyer for certain games and then dropping Bruno deeper for others... By playing Mainoo deep, then at 10, then at false 9 etc. can't be helping at all.

I know he's trying to find solutions and that trying things out is to be expected to a certain degree for a new manager, but when you're in a "difficult moment" as he would put it... Sometimes it's better to keep it simple, create some consistentancy, and then build on that base.

For now, I would like to see an end to switching over the WBs, and for him to make a call on whether Bruno is playing deeper or at 10 and just stick to that for the time being irregardless of opposition.

no, he should've never been bought in the first place. Arnold and Murtagh outdid Woodward in their short stint and bought absolute rubbish on obscene wages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,937 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Changing the wingbacks and 10s was especially frequent. IIRC looking at their stats in November their most played players were only hittiing 70% of minutes, with 'key' players hittiing less in some examples.

As you point out, I think a lot of the changes at United are forced by injuries, poor performance and solution searching. At Sporting it was, I believe, more tactical than we have so far seen at United.

I do think he rotated a lot early for training//fitness reasons and now he would have closer to a starting 11 - which is also beset by injuries. Now he also has to find a solution to no Martinez (or Shaw) and no Amad. So the question now, imo, will be Bruno or Zirkzee at 10 with garnacho (or both and no garnahco).

The CB position also an issue with whether it is Yoro or Mazraoui in for Martinez and then which side do they play.

    Personally I would go

Onana, Mazraouo (RCB), MDL, Yoro, Dalot (RWB), Dorgu, Ugarte, Collyer, Bruno, Garnacho, Zirkzee.

And i'd be seeing if any of the young players are worth minutes over Casemiro.

We are lacking, horribly, CM and 10 options (which anyone could have predicted coming out of the january window.

Yeh he would shake up the formation to suit the opponent, I think Statman Dave has a vid on it.

I think its this one, in work so can't confirm.

I would not be in favour of playing Zirkzee at 10 as it seems to result more variables/problem solving when we're out of possession. It should be a straight call between himself and Holjund for 9 imo, and it's important to have some option at 9 on the bench.

A few tough games ahead. Next four league games are an in-form Everton, six-pointer against Ipswich, title chasing Arsenal and another six-pointer against Leicester.

Lose three of those and there will be an interim in until the end of the season to steady the ship I'd say. The leaks yesterday about sounding out Xavi and Zidane will possibly keep him on his toes and force him to change things up a bit.
