Making smoothie's, is a hand blender or regular blender better?

My issue is they keep coming out foamy and full with air, which means you can't really "drink" them properly.

A standard counter-top blender, anyone find that good for making smoothie's?

A "Vitamix" is apparently the best, but stupidly expensive.

So yeah hand blenders = frothy/foamy smoothies.

I'm assuming a counter-stop model will correct that.
