To use the earlier analogy, Roosevelt has met Hitler without Europe to discuss peace in WW2. And within a few days Roosevelt is already repeating Hitler's propaganda.

What difference would that make? My understanding is POTUS has pretty much total control over foreign policy…

This has utterly dismayed me as well - no reaction on this from any of the European media, let alone the 'leaders'.

I'm just gobsmacked, and very, very sad.

I wouldn't go so far as to say they're headless chickens. They're at least talking about what to do if certain scenarios come to pass even if they publically deny things like deploying troops now. They're working on a massive military defence package at EU level precisely because the Orange Felons acting the bollocks and in order to make sure Ukraine doesnt fall because truthfully were approaching the point where Russia is at a very real chance of collapsing in the next year economically and militarily. As for Germany and France, Germany is in the middle of an election atm dealing with AfD Vatnik asshats right now, Scholz is not likely to be chancellor after its done so best to hold on what happens there till a new government is formed. As for France its well known that the French don't declare the value of what they sent, they just send it and apart from publically known assets like Mirages and Ceasars we know they're aiding Ukraine just not publicising the costs.

He might yet- everything is possible right now - America is only as good as its legal system and considering Trump is purging that of people not “loyal” to him, it may well yet happen

In addition to the silence from European leaders this morning it is also infuriating watching these Trump conferences and no journalists calling him out on his constant lies. Especially the Zelensky stuff last night.

“because truthfully were approaching the point where Russia is at a very real chance of collapsing in the next year economically and militarily.”

We can live in hope- but if it did happen not sure how strong the opposition will be in bringing in a more moderate leader - the more desperate Russia as a country becomes, I’m thinking the more desperate a leader they’ll elect

I don't know what exactly you're expecting but even during his first term his policy shifts were so erratic that EU members worked on an alternative payments system that would protect EU businesses from random sanctions.

Trump is all bluster. Did Mexico build a wall for him? Nah!

His only power is import sanctions that make life more expensive for this voters.

What would be the point; Trump is the two-ton gorilla here, he can do what he wants. IMO best course is to wheedle him, work on his vanity to bring him round to the right course, which seems to Zelensky's approach.

Russia collapsed twice in the last century, first in 1917 (Russian Empire) then in 1991 (USSR). A Third final collapse is possible if the Russian Government runs out of currency reserves and their military is so devastated after 4 years of fighting Ukraine that the regional governments decide to break away purely out of self preservation at which case Russia is reduced to a fraction of its current size. It's not impossible for it to happen either because Putin thought he could walk into Ukraine 3 years ago thinking they were weak and easy to dominate. Instead the Ukrainians have torn them to bits despite overwhelming odds. Putin's looking for a ceasefire now for a chance to regroup and rebuild not for peace and noone should give him that opportunity, now is the best time to put the Vatnik Bastards down for good. Trump might want to help Putin as he's a corrupt idiot but he might not be able to as there would still be strong resistance to it in the US and everyone else won't even tolerate giving Russia anything.

We haven't heard from European leaders because they don't just tweet every moronic thing comes into their heads.

Attempts to score points here are laughable.

Some would count the economic meltdown around 1997/8 as a third Russian collapse.

I'm surprised that no one has played up to Trumps ego in relation to achieving what no other American president has achieved in the past - to completely destroy their arch nemesis for the last 80 years.

To do so without a single American life lost would have been unthinkable in the time of JFK or Lyndon Johnson. Imagine his legacy after that? Vs the alternative - being remembered as an orange dictator wannabe.

Fair to say the developments this week have been worse than anyone predicted. Total and predictable betrayal of Ukraine by Trump and Europe doing very little to offer reassurance.

Zelensky is a very brave and honest though arguably foolish man to now claim Trump lives in a disinformation bubble. This will only push him closer to Putin. Is it possible that if Ukraine keeps fighting the Trump government will not just abandon them but actively aid Russia by passing on intelligence? Would not surprise me.

The American population have a lot to answer for, this man is a vile stain on their nation

Not a word from the UN or the European Parliament - allowing T to promulgate patent untruths like ‘Ukraine started this’ - the hell they did.
United they must stand or Divided - they and we will surely fall -

I don't think Poland is being clever, they are being stupid with their everyman for himself attitude to Zelensky's call for a European army. Thicker even than me-hole dipshit - at least he didn't have any contribution to make in the first place.

Poland is holding up this giant sign saying 'You Can Forget European Unity'. Yeah, real clever.

Apply Trump logic to Pearl Harbour. I wonder if anyone in the US will do that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,615 ✭✭✭swampgas

Putin and Trump have something in common: both are trying to stave off financial collapse - Putin of his Russian empire, and Trump of his business empire, which has been rumoured for years to be in serious trouble.

I suspect that a lot of Trumps massive grifting over the last decades has not simply been about getting richer, but about avoiding catastrophic bankruptcy. The Russians have been bailing him out for years and have him over a barrel, and he is such a self-centered evil bastard that he will happily sell out Ukraine, prop up a genocidal tyrant, and try to remove sanctions on Russia, to maintain his personal image of "genius businessman".

Yeah, criticism would probably just make him double down on f**king over Ukraine because Elon thinks Germany and the UK are woke. I really hope some nutter just blows his brains out at this stage it would do the world a lot of good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,574 ✭✭✭rogber

Yes we need a Stauffenberg but this time with success. Such a pity the bullet missed him last year. A dead Trump would be a great thing for the entire world, he is a hideous man with frightening amount of power and this time around is doing full on emperor stuff

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,740 ✭✭✭saabsaab

More sanctions and that's it? Weak response from EU and very disappointing. Putin will just shrug it off and with him on the controls of Trump's brain he will get US sanctions lifted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,064 ✭✭✭✭cnocbui

"The current carve up and handing Putrid the win, that some think are about peace, is going to fail. Trump will try and blame Ukrainian intransigence for not accepting his great deal to surrender and die and he'll then use it as justification to cease all support."

    That hasn't aged too badly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,064 ✭✭✭✭cnocbui

I hope you are being premature. I hope they are joining the dots and realising that a mighty trade war with the US is now inevitable and that this goes for any and all interactions between the US and Europe going forward. Europe can't work with the US, and this is a lot for anyone to absorb and process. There were common shared world views, not any more.

Basically, give them time, they are still dragging themselves out of the wreckage of the worst diplomatic multi vehicle pile-up I can remember in my lifetime.

EU needs to announce a nuclear weapons program. The deal with the US's massive efforts aimed at non proliferation since WW2 was - we got your back.

The US hasn't got anyone's back, they are in bed with the enemy, enjoying a cigarette.

What cards does Putin hold over Trump?

Trumps comments on Ukraine are either Trump insanity or Putin blackmailing Trump for something.

Something in Putin's photo album maybe? Got to be something like that.
