Car Insurance Quotes

I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction with getting the best insurance quotes based on my strange situation below!

I've had a (provisional!) licence for 15+ years, I'm now in my 40's. I bought a new car, 1 series BMW 2012 model.

Based on the above I was expecting to pay a high insurance policy which I accept, but I feel the quotes I'm getting are still bordering on extorionate - in and around €4k

Most online quotes are asking about my driving 'history' but this only focuses on the most recent years. I haven't had a policy/car in 4+ years because I haven't needed one as I work from home. Circumstances have changed in work so I need to get back on the road. I feel like im being penalised for not driving as my actual full driving history isn't being taken into account. In the past I've actually had a policy in my own name for 5 years, and been a named driver for 8 but none of this is taken into account. Is there anywhere that will consider the actual full extent of driving experience when making a quote?

Just to add to this - I actually got a quote from one insurer of ~€1500 which was great and I went for it but here's the thing (and this is the point where I learned about no claims bonuses and their expiry) - on their online booking they ask about your driving history/insurance but they do not ask how recent it was. I answered the question honestly (5years policy in my own name). At no point did it state you would need to provide proof of no claims, there was no reference to this at all. When they took the money for the policy, I looked at the statement of fact and it said that my most recent car insurance policy expired on 13/02/25. I did not state this at all and I wasn't asked when it expired, they put that there themselves. So in order for the policy to be active I need to send proof of no claims which I cannot do. I'm waiting for them to come back to me about this but I'm expecting it to be cancelled.

So i'm currently uninsured, down 1500 and looking at quotes of €4k, it would be great if anyone can point me in the right direction for quotes here!

Just to also note, yes I will be getting my full licence immediately once insured, and yes I know I should have got it years ago (that's my bad) but I didn't really need it during that period.

Get onto them immediately and cancel it yourself and get a refund, if you get cancelled by them you'll find it very difficult to get any reasonable quote or any quote at all going forward. 'Have you ever had an insurance policy cancelled?' is a standard question which pretty much blacklists you if you have.

2 years is standard NCB time in Ireland, you're now just a learner starting out from scratch so it's not going to be cheap.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

How do know you will be getting your full licence immediately. Do you mean you will be doing your driving test?

basically, legally, you're a learner driver with no NCB, no recent experience (4+ years as you say), and wanting to insure a BMW.

It wouldn't have surprised me at all if you got no quotes from anyone.

It is not reasonable to believe that you would not have been asked to prove your NCB. Are you saying in the 8 years in the past that no-one ever asked for it……..?………highly unlikely…

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Take the above advice about cancelling your new policy.

If your insurer cancels the policy instead, you will be rightly up the creek going forward.

Can you get proof of your previous policy being claim-free, and similar re your Named Driver years?

Try a few brokers. Better to have documentation on the above in hand before you call.
