I want to resign from one dept of the civil service to take up and accept the offer of an equivalent garde in a diff public body as I want to work on a new area of expertise after I was offered the role after interview,.. it means I have to resign from my current job where I am established and passed probation/permanent and start a 12 month probationary period. I’m so nervous about doing this even though I really want the new job…on the off chance I fail my probation and get sacked can I go back to an equivalent job in the civil service (even my old dept)…is there any gov circular about this….i wonder could I take a career break and then it wouldn’t feel so risky…appreciate any advice ….

If you resign, you can't go back. Resignation is permanent.

You also won't be granted a career break to "test the waters" in another part of the service, that is not allowed.

yes, you are right…I will just have to make the leap …I winder can I carry over my service and incremental credit to date …is there a circular on this anywhere ? Thanks

I've done this. I had to complete probation again. But my increments and increment date carried forward (as in I stayed on the same point of salary scale and get my increments based on the date I started in the civil service originally, not the date I started the new job).

I would not have been able to return to my old role once I left it. But I wasn't overly concerned about passing probation again.

Why can't you just transfer ?

I've moved departments twice. Once on promotion and then on a chosen demotion to a different part of the country. Both were open panels and I didn't break service.

Absolutely not allowed.

Career breaks are only granted for very specific purposes, e.g. travel, further education or caring for family.

They're not granted so someone can test run working somewhere else.

(edit - you can take a career break for self-employment).

Do take the leap. You've been through probation before and it's a breeze if you keep your nose clean and don't take the p***. As you well know yourself you want to be some headbanger to fail probation in the CS. Best of luck in the new appointment.

I'm unsure, I will check the circular when I get a chance, but I think there is something about holding public office.

I do know civil servants cannot be politically active, so that rules them out of being TDs!

Does working in a different jurisdiction constitute 'travel', I wonder? I thought you were allowed to take career break to work abroad, like all the teachers in Dubai.

You can take a career break to travel abroad to work, or for starting your own business / self-employment here.

I do think the question referred to within Ireland, as they said another public body / CS role?

Rules around career break vary wildly between different areas of the public service. As mentioned, those who work in education (teachers) don’t have many of the limitations that apply to the civil service (eg teachers can seek political office, civil servants can’t)

I took it to mean a different county not country.

I'd be surprised if they referred to a civil service or public service job in another country, in this context.

Anyway, they haven't come back to say! If it is outside the country it's fine.
