The reaction of the Europeans to increase support to Ukraine secures their long term ability to continue the fight.

But the problem is long-term won't cut it here. If American support was to be eliminated or even drastically slashed Europe would have to step up more or less immediately if Ukraine was not to be overrun. I'm not confident Europe has the capacity to do that and Zelensky doesn't seem to either

The exclusion of the US and Ukraine from the talks in Saudi Arabia implies it's not actually about peace talks but negotiations as to what each of the two will get from the carve up. My guess would be Russia gets the lot and the US gets some vague promises of a steady supply of magic beans and a 20 year lease on a 2 acre site near the water front of Odessa to build a hotel on if the materials are sourced from Orcistan, the Orange prat being such a great negotiator - remember how he prevented NK from getting nuclear weapons - masterful.

Agree with this and it’s been my assumption all along.

    • Trump administration will reach some outrageous ‘peace agreement’ with Russia that requires capitulation to all Russian demands.
    • this will be rejected out of hand by Ukraine and the EU
    • it will be then presented in the USA as Trump masterminding the negotiations and delivering a deal that stops further “millions” of people dying but the EU and Ukraine torpedoed it
    • Probably be presented as the lazy EU spitting in the USAs face, wanting “Uncle Sucker” to keep subsidizing them etc.
    • Ultimately let’s Trump look like a hero and us as ingrates

All lies that are not allowed to be challenged. After that happens I’m not sure what the end-goal is; just let Putin attempt to take all Ukraine portraying it as a righteous/just reluctant action in response for the EU warmongering perhaps, or replacing Zelensky

His representatives; Hegseth, Vance, Leavitt, envoy in Gaza, everyone, who speaks anywhere spends more than half their time referring to him and extolling him as a genius, mastermind, strongman, sheriff…. Literally like a cult. And he lies and talks nonsense with impunity, like recently how he faced down the BRICS nations (Spain is apparently a member, unclear on China…) by threatening a 100% tariff on them and they were so beaten down by him they’re going to breakup now or some nonsense

Similar, claiming reciprocal tariffs will be put in but also claiming VAT is a tariff so when prices and inflation rise in the USA he can point to some other lie.

Rather than 1939 peace in our time deal as others have said, this stinks more of the molotov-ribbentrop pact.

re Trump and his MAGA concept. I assume that he is referring to the time when the US was TOP DOG in the world and especiallyy in relation to technical advancement, economic and military matters. It had to be comparing itself to other countries and , TRADITIONALLY, the only treat to it was RUSSIA. That’s why the US got into space exploration - who would be first on the moon- , development of nuclear arms, etc in order to show - in an outwardly way who is the best.

leaving China aside for the moment what Trump is now doing is ‘helping ‘ Ru to increase its dominance in the world - the opposite of what he should be doing if he wants to MAGA. He should be VERY CAREFUL what he wuishes for in case the BRICS axis takes off.

The point is that as we have seen from Boucha and other locations where Russian has taken control, what they have planned for Ukraine and Ukrainians. Genocide, the complete removal of all things Ukrainian, their language and culture, and their presence. The only thing preventing this is President Zelenski and the Ukrainian military, and the will to fight, because they know only too well what will happen to them if they stop fighting.

In the event of a Russian collapse the US will now very much be treated as spectators because of Trump's sidelining of Ukraine and the rest of Europe.

The biggest threat to Russia and the Federation is Vladimir Putin and his crazy dream of resurrecting the USSR. Ukraine never attacked Russia or posed a threat to Russia….how could they? Attack the perceived 2nd mightiest military in the world after the US? Russian ramblings……

Europe needs to cyber attack Russia into the stone age, it's ridiculous that Russia is running a constant campaign of sabotage but the EU have to be good boys and girls and play be the rules

It's hilarious listening to Newstalk today and hearing them squirm over the US and how we should get into bed with the brutal dictatorship that runs China while giving out about trump and Russia.

The EU had 3 year's to get their house massively in order. Remember trump's first term when they laughed him out of the room over NATO members not even meeting the 2% mark. If only everyone took the threat as serious as Poland did.

Exactly right. Note that the Kremlin mouthpieces have been saying for years that the very concept of Ukraine-ness is, by definition anti-Ruzzian. And since the Ruzzians have an unique take on 'nazism', one unrelated to any definition in western historiography or political science, that defines it as being mainly Ruzzophobic in essence, this means to the vatniks Nazism=Ukrainianism. They muddy the water by throwing in stuff like 'banderites' and such-like, but its essence is full-blooded Ruzzian imperialism and there can be no compromise with it.

Human rights? Sending men covered in bloody bandages into the attack? Ordering men on crutches onto the front line?

It's not really embarrassing, whatever the outcome. It's the responsibility of every person to resist subjugation for the sake of all humanity. As soon as it becomes easy to subjugate, people will be farmed on mass, we basically have to make ourselves "difficult" by fighting for individual rights and freedoms, or we are doomed as a species. So no, fighting and dieing for freedom is never a waste of time.

I feel like the right thing to do now is for the Europeans to enter the war. Pull the rug out from underneath Trump and Putin.

I feel if Ukraine can hang in longer something big will swing in their favor.

The Orcs have ground to a halt in many places along the Eastern Front.

Trump will bail out Putin at the last minute unless Ukraine remain resolute.

The most important aspect of the war which is currently not being talked about behind all the political bluster. Russia still trying their best but currently stalled. A few more months of this and Ukraine have the upper hand in negotiations.

IMO, Trump has been shown enough of the war to challenge this ‘ strongman ‘ image that Trump has of Putin and has been shown that VZ can match it if not SURPASS it.
is it not just incredible how successful UKr has been to date given

    -its relative army size

    • It’ population disadvantage
    • It’s armed resources disadvantage
    • VZ comment re its And he has MOarE than lived up to what this meant arms I want and not a helicopter to ship me out.
    • Ukr now in control of a part of Ru
    • Putin’s bluff called to date when as per his utterances he should have used his nukes a long time ago

    • Does Trump not see all of the above being provided by a resolute nation, a brave army, a brave leadership, an intellegent war strategy, etc, etc. and ALL this going on with one hand tied behind their backs while Putin , with both hands can flail all around him be they hospitals, schools, residential. Areas, train stations, etc, etc, etc.

More confirmations that neither Ukraine nor Europe will be involved in the talks at Saudi

It's going to be Trump's team and Putin. The optics and message that sends the world is something else..

"Hey Roosevelt, leave out Europe, lets negotiate with Hitler directly"

ah yes, the same Banderas who the Nazi's locked up for collaborating with the Soviets…

He played both sides, in the interest of Ukraine, each side likes to selectively forget that.

⚡️ 🇩🇪  Rheinmetall has increased production of 155-mm shells by another 50,000 units, reaching 750,000 units per year, says the company's CEO

The plan is to reach 1.1 million 155-mm shells per year in 2027

I'm sorry but Europe had 3 year's to do a better job then this. Can't blame the defence companies. The EU should have backed a major upscaling initiative. Obviously it's better then nothing but Russia is also scaling up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 541 ✭✭✭vswr

I agree, but it is also not the full picture (Rhinemetall are not the be all and end all)…

    Other inititives:

-UK home produced shells ramped up last year

    -Nordics locally produced shells upped

    -Shell lines opened in Ukraine

-BAE initiative with the US (obvious caveats with Trump)

-Czechia local and international production increased

    among others.

I saw something a day or two ago that I really should have posted - Ukrainian was saying they had enough shells, the problem was they no longer had sufficient targets to deliver them to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,439 ✭✭✭✭astrofool

Given you've immediately done it again ("obvious problems the Ukrainian military is facing") in the post denying it is a bit facetious, as well as your claptrap on the Shahed drone hitting the Chernobyl dome being a Ukrainian ploy.

Anyway, keep posting the bile, keep seeing it funneled back down your throat afterwards :)

Did you read the British report that suggested NATO wasn't happy with Ukraine's Soviet style use of artillery. Apparently they burn through it too fast instead of shooting more rounds more accurately. All I know is almost every video I see of Russian armour and soldiers comes from a drone but then again a drone is more likely to record a hit. Not like artillery has a camera attached.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,740 ✭✭✭saabsaab

There must be much NATO standard munitions in the EU that could be provided to Ukraine if the US stops provision of same. Enough to keep their US weapons going for noweven if the uS refuses to sell their munitions to Ukraine?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,068 ✭✭✭✭cnocbui

No, got a link? Contradicts everything else I have ever read on the topic.

It's not going to happen, because no-one wants a war with Russia. It's always "someone else" who should send troops.
