Only a rumour for now, but published in the Hollywood Reporter so probably has legs. Honestly, I'm surprised it took this long for even the rumour to become public. Seems like one of the more obvious IPs Warners could use for their streaming service...

Hopefully, whatever comes to fruition it's better than the Fantastic Beasts films - ie, I really hope they don't let JK Rowling write the scripts.

Oh and it'll be nice to watch something Harry Potter that WASN'T directed by David Yates  :D

Is this the only thread on it? Seems to be old dated thread. Found through www.perplexity.ai search on site not great. Reason for posting:-

John Lithgow is nearing a deal to star as Professor Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s hotly anticipated Harry Potter series, sources told Deadline and Variety.

^^ Source:- https://bsky.app/profile/did%3Aplc%3Avovinwhtulbsx4mwfw26r5ni/post/3lhzagf5xdi2p ~ See disclaimer at end of this linked post.

Seems like a good choice, his humour and passage would fit the role. ~~ Wrong term!?

John Lithgow is ideal for the part?

    • "They are perfect for the role."
    • "They are tailor-made for the part."
    • "They are the best fit for the character."
    • "They are well-suited for the role."

ⓘ "At some point something inside me just clicked and I realized that I didn't have to deal with anyone's bullshit ever again."

Great casting, but it's a 10 year project (and he'll be needed for 7-8 years).

    Lithgow is 79…

John Lithgow is a treasure and I hope he has many fine performances left in him (if he doesn't wish to retire, of course). But it is a pretty risky endeavour to cast someone a few months shy of 80 in a central role in a decade-long project.

Imagine having to recast Dumbledore halfway through the series, couldn't possibly work 😀

The film recasting showed it is very much possible. And even if they cast someone in their mid-50s, any number of things - from scandal to quitting to illness - could prevent them from reaching the end of such a long project. Hell, the same could be said for anyone cast in every one of the young roles. There's plenty of people in their 80s and even 90s (94-year-old Clint Eastwood released a - good! - new film last year) who have continued working happily and successfully.

But, naturally assuming you'd want a consistent cast across ten years if at all possible, casting an 80-year-old is unquestionably a riskier proposition than casting, say, a 60-year-old. As I said, though, I hope Lithgow has many happy years left ahead of him - certainly his Conclave performance proved he remains a sharp and gifted performer.

Paapa Essiedu has now been cast as Severus Snape

Max’s Harry Potter TV series has officially cast four series regulars and two recurring roles, including four actors Deadline previously revealed:

John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid

The newly announced cast includes Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.

Not really sure who Luke Thallon is but the other casting is great! Sounds promising.

Can definitely picture Paul Whitehouse as Filch.

And I would not know Nick Frost from that picture. Looks like it's taken from a British period detective show.

He is UNRECOGNISABLE in that pic. My God. And you are absolutely right. Looks like it could be from a British cop show. The only issue I have with the casting is Lithgow as Dumbledor. It'll really depend on what accent he uses.

TBH, I don't know if we NEED another version. I thought the films did a good job of adapting the books. Do we REALLY need a n extended subplot about house elf rights? It was actually a potentially interesting topic: How other non-human sentient beings are treated. Typically referred to as "Creatures"…. I mean :) But it was SO poorly handled in the books. I'm not one to overanalyze things in movies but the bankers at Gringotts were right up there with the horrific "urban" Skids & Mudflab in Transformers or the "Me So Solly" aliens in The Phantom Menace.

I'm late to the game. Just reading through the books with my daughter and watching the movies as we finish each one. We're moving on to book 4 now. While I struggle to see how they could get a full season out of PS, the progression and depth to the books increases and there is a lot that was left out of the movies. In particular (from what we've watched so far) PoA is leaves out loads of backstory, side plots and events. Judging by the shear size of the later books, there's obviously going to be more material that will help stretch out over a full 8/10 episode season. It'll be interesting to see what they do for PS though. They'll have to stretch that material out a lot.
