Tyre pressure sensors on Ford Fiesta showing fault - is this an NCT fail?

Hi All. My son has a Ford Fiesta that is due its NCT, thanks be to jeebus it is the 1.25 zetec engine and not those wet belt timebombs. In the last year he put a set of alloys on it (ford ones) but now there is a fault on the dash indicating "tyre pressure sensor fault". The new alloys don't have tyre pressure sensors on them. Is this an automatic fail on the NCT? or is it something that they don't test for or doesn't fall under their remit?

Just reset it and get the alloys checked if they are leaking air. I had a nightmare with a focus. Changed valves tyres etc but to no avail. It still passed the nct .

Thanks Hilly Bill, the alloys don't have the sensor valves in them, just standard valves. I'm wondering can we just re set it at the centre and it will pass.

You should be able to reset it on the dash. It's s button you hold down until the light goes out.

Yes, on his one you hold down the "OK" button in the middle of the buttons for the radio and then go into Vehicle Settings and hit reset.

It is a fail for vehicles registered on or after the 1st of January 2015.

That's mad. It's just a sensor and has no direct bearing on the actual tyre pressure . This shouldn't be a fail.

You can't reset it of there are no sensors in the wheels!

Just get the sensors from the old wheels fitted op, they will need to be programmed if they aren't on the same wheel as they were before (front right, left rear etc)

As above if its post 2015 its a fail. But its only a visual fail so if you can make the light go out for a few seconds afterwards it will pass

That's really the clarification I was looking for, we will have to buy a set of sensors and get them synced in so.

He's half thinking of selling it after we get it through the NCT anyway so this will save us having to explain to buyers about a light on the dash and it meaning nearly nothing to the actual running of the car.

The old steel wheels are gone unfortunately, we'll buy a set of sensors. It's a silly feature to have on a small car imo.

To be fair tyres are just as important on a small car as they are a big car

They've become much more important with the advent of bigger wheels and low profile tyres. You don't get the 'feel' of lowered pressures until it's too late.

A friend of mine has a Ford Galaxy with the same problem. Apparently a common problem with Fords although I never had it in my ownership.

It's not exactly a problem particular to Fords. Anyone removing the tyre pressure sensors would have the same problem.

My friend's car didn't have them removed. He stated after a few years, it was common to see this problem on Fords.

Well the OP removed his with his wheel change to alloys. So your friend's experience isn't exactly relevant.
