We've seen in the Ukraine that countries are not willing to challenge even Russia even though there is an illegal war with every atrocity you can imagine, or challenge Israel who slaughter 60,000 people like shooting fish in a barrel. There is zero chance they grow a set and challenge the US unless war comes to their door.

We clearly never learn from history and we're all going to suffer as a result.

The best course of action is to stop trading with them. Bump up the prices on things that simply have to be sold to them and create a revolt in the country. Isolate them diplomatically and financially. It'll be painful but short. Far cheaper and less damaging than the inevitable conflict that will arise. Unfortunately there'll always be poisonous countries that will try to fill the void that's created. Trump would have no issue going to Russia for Potash, aluminium and oil.

Very defeatist- I’m not saying we’ll change the world posting here - but in fairness to our own Taoiseach so far, I think he “gets” it - Harris won’t roll over - we need to now become Europeans finally

There is a kind of peace to be had in removing every last Palestinian from Gaza, or really from all of Palestine. It's just not the kind of peace that respects human rights in any way. It's pax Trumpicana.

Israel will probably continue to invest in their iron dome system, so rocket attacks from neighbouring countries will be a threat, but a manageable one.

From a geopolitical standpoint, if Israel and the US follow through on this plan, we'll see how serious Iran are.

Safe to assume he’s already done the deal considering his latest comment on Ukrainians becoming Russian again

Probably nothing except provide Israel with the munitions. Trump made it clear last week that US troops would not be the combatants in a ground war in Gaza.

Presser featuring president Musk and VP Trump.

I realise anything could happen in a month, but there is no chance of anyone taking shamrock to America this year, is there?

"Getting it" and doing something about it are two very different things. Russia showed themselves to be weak within weeks of starting the war and no one wanted to escalate with them.

The US is 100 times more capable than Russia. There's zero chance any country puts its head above the parapet. They should but they won't.

    That's his son, X Æ A-Xii. Maybe Musk couldn't find a babysitter in time.

Has to be factored in that the MAGA voters have gone nuts too. Trump is no dictator in the traditional sense - the disciples all agree with him and are backing him all the way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,886 ✭✭✭✭aloyisious

Agreed on throwing out the opposition playbook. They can try contacting any good friends they have on the other side of congress from the anti-Trump rump of the GOP to get an idea of how to proceed in there and in state houses across the US.

The idea of popular streets protests is something Trump would relish, a way to bring his thugs back on to the streets. That carries risks for him though as not all those from Jan 2021 are so loyal to his brand now.

It may take a economic slide for people in the US to turn on Trump strongly enough to defeat him and his MAGA base, maybe persuade enough of that side of the GOP to see he's going to take them down with him so they turn on him. Hopefully they'll toss Musk out as well, cancel his citizenship and fly him back to South Africa.

Kind of Ironic that that Clown Elon is talking about a Democracy and they are dismantling the American one. I think he knows abd maybe it frightebs him a bit but he is afraid to stand up to Trump. Also he is the richest man/person in the World and sounds so nervous. Not doing himself any favours.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

No he won't. I think people are getting a little carried away. I think Trump will get very bored of the White House again soon and go golfing. He'll have a chaotic first 100 and then completely taper back. He is largely a waffler but his foreign diplomacy/utterances is doing real damage on the world stage. He is undermining all international norms and laws. The American empire has been failing for a while now and it will continue to do so.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

For me, American people can do what they wish and let the cards fall where they will - it’s their country. However I’m European - if that means anything at all ,and I think it does, I think the people of EU as well as the politicians need to send a strong but lawful message to America.

I was never a supporter of the actions of Hamas- I support the Palestinians people right to their lands - but that’s complicated by terrorist acts of a minority - and I will still criticise and condemn Hamas - but this is not the way to solve the “Middle East crisis” as it’s been known now for decades. It’s insane what Trump is proposing but the future is even more frightening if it succeeds.

I take your point on street protests in America and MAGA unleashing their unlawful violence - but I’m in Europe - I’ll follow the European way for the time being - let MAGA come to St. Patrick’s day parade in March - I’m sure they’ll get the reception they deserve. I would actually support a ban on America participating at St. Patrick’s day parade and yes I know that means the shamrock ☘️ press shoot cancelled at the White House - right now couldn’t give a fck -

At first I thought it was Techno Mechanicus, but you're right it is X Æ A-Xii. Not to be confused with Exa Dark Sideræl, which is, of course, a girl's name.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,037 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

Because everything they are doing is amateurish, childish and without precedent. Everything about that presser demeans the office. And it makes Trump look weak. Sitting there like a worker while the office manager takes questions.

    How did we get here?

Musk is the long term danger. He has the will and the mindless minions to carry on doing real damage. And he has real ambitions to extend his control outside the US. The EU, Britain and Canada should conspire to financially ruin him.

Ffs what a laugh we're all having...Trump is threatening neighbouring countries and blowing up the middle east but ya let's have the 'bantz'...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,802 ✭✭✭✭fullstop

Because it’s a **** circus with tweedle dum and tweedle dumber leading the show. There was a fella on newstalk (I think) a few weeks ago…Cal Thomas or something…was asked about all this stuff trumpf was planning and kept saying “he can’t. There are so many checks and balances in the US constitution”. Where are the checks and balances now?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,063 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

Cal Thomas is infuriating. And not because he is an intellectual powerhouse, but because for years he supported Trump, made excuses when he ***ked up, downplayed the importance of his egregious behaviour. He spouts lies so fast the presenter cannot keep up. Cooper is the same with his Trump supporter. It's a sh1tshow

Elect a clown... Expect a circus

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,067 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Cal throws a tantrum worse than X-æ-xii if interrupted so its best to let him ramble off for a spell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,063 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

Let him ramble on? And let him spread lie after lie? That's not a journalist's job.

The problem with this gish gallop approach. It's nearly impossible to deal with, unless you have the irrefutable facts at your fingertips.

Neither journalist is up to it.

Elect a clown... Expect a circus

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,067 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

I think everyone with a quarter of a brain knows Biden wasn't importing disabled criminals from Venezuela into America to secure votes (think that was an outstanding claim Cal made 3 weeks ago).

Most Irish aren't thick enough to buy the MAGA crap and just laugh at Cal's more doddery moments. The segment would be unlistenable if it was just Matt constantly refereeing Cal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,063 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

Allowing a dangerous bullsh1t artist unchecked airtime in either prime time shows just stupid to me.

Elect a clown... Expect a circus

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,067 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Then you'd have the whingers whining about bias/censorship.

It really is best to let them ramble on and they'll eventually hang themselves and ruin any credibility they appeared to have with an utterly moronic claim.

Its the same way to handle Roe McDermott.

I think he will be fired by mid term. Trump thinks he is a CEO of a big corp, he will get annoyed with Musk soon enough. Other republicans will also ask him to remove Musk from the circus.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?
