Seems the Army was asked, however their response was they didn't have enough to support Army operations let alone Naval ops. As for bringing back people, that is the planned response in the next couple of months… At multiple times the cost of the actual naval personnel that they let go of course.

Id say the Army were thinking dont help the enemy.

Could the navy not do even a short term deal with Leonardo to keep the 76mm working the same way they are getting Wärtsilä to look after the P60s engines

I can see the Army's armorers being useful for the 20mm maybe, but I can't imagine they know a hell of a lot about a 76mm mount to help fix it.

Bringing retired naval personnel back can screw their tax obligations. That will likely scupper that avenue.

And lets face it, nobody goes to sea for free…!

Yep, just another unforeseen effect of FEMPI and subsequent gouging of service conditions and pensions that we've seen in the Guards as well.

The new government would want to get on top of these self-inflicted problems fairly lively.

The suggestion of the report is that the former personnel will be hired on as private contractor's rather than return to service so shouldn’t cause them tax issues? I mean it will be significantly more expensive than increasing the pay to keep the unit at strength but that somehow doesn’t matter.

Any additional income they receive could mean punitive tax on the individual. I know someone who had to give up working as it had such a negative impact on his navy pension.

Generally the issue is under pension abatement is a person cannot be in a public service job and be in receipt of a public service pension - its essentially one or the other unless an exception can be made, which is a very high bar. However, the former naval technician could come back in the employ of a contractor which means the can get their pension and salary. however, this is generally more expensive. So in effect the system is working against itself. There needs to be a realization that military hardware is complex, technical and incorporates a high degree of ICT etc. We need to pay accordingly.

On the topic of an MPV....what about purchasing either HMS Albion or Bulwark currently up for disposal? They're reported to be goin cheap!

There hasn't been a final decision in London. One suspects that with the state of the World, they may go into reserve rather than be sold off.

In any case, a 600 ft amphibious assault ship that takes needs 300 to crew even when empty of embarked forces, is not something we have any use for.

no, they are never serving in the RN again, most rumours point to joining Ocean in Brazilian service (or at least Bulwark, Albion might just be used as a parts bin for her), other than that, of course your right that there isn’t anything we would want them for even if we were already at LoA3 level of capability and spending.

Seems insane. Even if everything went perfectly the first RN MRSS won't enter service for 8 years.

That leaves only the Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships to embark Royal Marines expeditionary units.

I'm laughing here at the gap between ambition and reality in GB.

The front runner for the MRSS class, the 'Fearless' proposal, only has the Dragon Fire laser weapon as its entire armament!

Seems there’s a few different issues, not only is keeping both carriers operational eating manpower but the LPDs have a bespoke engine system compared to the rest of the fleet now so issues around training and supports. And given the RN has its own recruitment/retention issues it’s basically accepting the reality that they couldn’t generate enough crew, added to which you have the reduction in RM levels and the changed circumstances of Sweden and Finland joining NATO.

Also no the Fearless proposal isn't the front runner, it’s not even a thing as the parent company has gone bust.

Niamh has apparently suffered hull damage while holding sea acceptance trials.

I know our sailors don't like going to sea, but damaging the boat is going a bit far..

    :-P

Ouch, that looks nasty alright. Looks like she'll be out of business for a while.

What's the status of Róisín? Can she be made operational quickly enough to cover for Niamh whilst the latter gets her hull repaired?

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

They are both laid up anyway, so there's no crisis there.

Aoibhinn has managed to put a hole in her side in Kinsale back in October:

i think at this stage the army have infiltrated the navy and are causing these incidents to make the navy look bad so they wont become an equal party in the defence forces. The Air Corps better watch out.
