Correct. Those that would moan at the strategy would be the very same know it alls that would moan if VVD went off injured after 5 mins like Gomez did.

Has anyone said… ‘they’d be the same people complaining if X player lost half a leg’ in the last 5 seconds?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,808 ✭✭✭brevity

because we are doing so well elsewhere it’s fine…it’s not the end of the world.

So we would have ended up playing City away in successive weekends if we had have got through yesterday

Missing out on more FA Cup games is excellent for our season. Missing a game against City is all the better.

Im a bit disappointed with the sell Transfer flak when he's contributed about 5 times more than Nunez and Chiesa combined this season.

Maybe it's just his relative sell-ability?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 946 ✭✭✭Dr Robert

Rw. Diaz, he might be just going through a big dip in form. It happens.

Szoboszlai looked like he was on the decline earlier on in the season. Not now, he's one of the best players currently and he's flying.

Diaz could spark again this season. Talk of selling him is silly and premature imo.

If this has been posted before, my apologies, but I read on RAWK that the last time Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs & Chelsea were all gone before the 5th round of the FA Cup, was 1984. Liverpool won the league, European Cup & League Cup that season. Omen?

I have to be honest Villa game being rescheduled in this 2 weeks mix really threw me. 5 games In 2 weeks just doesn’t seem feasible to come out unscathed without injuries and dropped points.

Think we could have managed Everton and Wolves with full strength teams and with a week to recover take on City & Newcastle. Throwing Villa away into mix absolutely messes with our recovery that week and a real headache now with rotation and potentially overloading key players who on can’t afford to drop if we want to win those games . Arsenal aren’t dropping points to Leicester or West Ham so really wonder where we’ll be by time Newcastle come to anfield and Arsenal play Forest .

Beating Everton and Wolves is critical now as we’ll need that 9 point buffer. Hope I’m wrong but I just can’t see us winning all of those 5 games if such difficulty.

It's an opportunity for the team to get into a rythm and build on their lead. At the same time our nearest rivals play each other so they can't all catch us in the event of a slip up.

    • Arsenal: Leicester (A), West Ham (H), Nottingham Forest (A)
    • Nottingham Forest: Exeter (A), Fulham (A), Newcastle (A), Arsenal (H)
    • Chelsea: Brighton (A), Aston Villa (A), Southampton (H)
    • Newcastle: Man City (A), Nottingham Forest (H), Liverpool (A)
    • Man City: Real Madrid (H), Newcastle (H), Real Madrid (A), Liverpool (H), Tottenham (A)
    • Bournemouth: Southampton (A), Wolves (H), Brighton (A)
    • Aston Villa: Ipswich (H), Liverpool (H), Chelsea (H), Crystal Palace (A)

The three day turn around between the Man City and Newcastle games will be tough, however we play Man City on the same day that Newcastle play Nottingham Forest so it's not like they'll have an extra recovery day. We also play Man City off the back of their trip to the Bernabeu, the fixture couldn't have been timed better for us.

A good point on City game timing for sure but there’s rhythm and then there’s overload. As I said I was okay with 4 games but this Villa game feels like it’s just made a tough run really punishing on the players . Injuries for some reason feel inevitable with 5 games . rotation and tiredness could well play a part in dropping points as well . Again I hope I’m wrong

I’m not concerned about the chasing pack other than Arsenal who will be well rested. The fixture vs Forest would be game that jumps out but it’s annoying even then Forest have only 3 days between Newcastle away and the crucial game at Arsenal and might rotate . Arsenal have a day extra off on top a light schedule anyway . Anyway it’s just crucial to beat Everton mid week or there will a lot more pressure on those remaining very tough 4 games .

Doubt it. They would have kept us apart till a later round I reckon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,730 ✭✭✭mormank

Agreed. That's why any talk of the league already being wrapped up is so premature. It's not even close. You can quote me on this if you like but we will 100% drop points during that run of 5 games in 15 days, it's about how many we drop if you ask me and we will most likely pick up a few injuries so again the question is how many and to whom and how that affects the squad for the rest of the league.

6 points clear with a game in hand could easily become 2 points or 0 points clear with a game in hand in the space of a few days with how the games are scheduled and if that happens we will be under enormous pressure to not "bottle" it as we "had it won" in Feb or whatever. If that happens every game will become an uphill struggle.

Why is "the treble" only considered the FA Cup when the exact same clubs play in the League Cup. Just because of the "magic" of the FA Cup or that historically the prestige of going to Wembley for an FA Cup final?

Why is 99 considered the treble for United but not 84 for Liverpool?

If the League Cup contributes to a quadruple then it has to contribute to a treble!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,988 ✭✭✭Enzokk

I sort of agree, one trophy a season is difficult, never mind three whichever they are. But I suppose it is because the League Cup was only founded in 1960 while the FA Cup was founded in 1871 and there are more than 600 teams participating in it. There are 6 rounds from August to October before the competition starts in November and then the PL teams enter the competition in the 3rd round.

I don't really care if we win three trophies if it isn't seen as good as United's treble. People will always find something to minimise our achievements. I do the same so if we do go on to win a treble we can enjoy the 3 trophies on the parade while other fans quibble whether 1999 was better or not.

Also, 2001 was a treble and no one will ever tell me different 😉

This conspiracy theory about FA Cup draws is getting old.

Look at the ties for the next round, none of them are in anyway sexy. If there was a scenario where they fixed a draw they would be absolutely making at least 1 big pairing per round and City would have gotten us or United

They use different people for every draw. Think through how improbable fixing would be keeping everyone involve quiet forever....and for no major benefit.

The fun thing is City got Real in the CL and I'm looking forward to watching that one

The next round of the FA Cup? Zero interest even as a neutral in 100% of those ties. Awful draw

Re Diaz, number 9 is a far harder position to play for LFC than the the wings. Usually get the ball with back to goal, little space, best opposition defender up against you. Whereas on the wing you have space to run into, first objective to cut inside and have a go with your strong foot. No recriminations for misses. Salah and Gakpo are having great seasons, it doesnt matter they have a big amount of missed shots (esp Mo!).

Diaz had a super start to the season on the wing. And actually had 2 or 3 really good games at 9. Since then he’s been fine. He has not been poor in any shape (I’m ignoring the Plymouth game which i didnt see and is irrelevant).

Darwin deserves the start v Everton due to his recent upturn in form, and Diogo will hopefully get the most starts there between now and end of season if he can stay fit, but the 5 of them are all important in the quest to win the league.

If Liverpool had beaten Plymouth, we would 100% be playing City in the next round. But we didnt and most of us dont care

Although Carra definitely fixed the league cup semi final draw to ensure we played Spurs at home in the second leg rather than the reverse! But that wasnt pre-planned, he just saw the opportunity and couldnt resist

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,671 ✭✭✭Talisman

Are the team numbers for the FA Cup draw pre-determined, i.e. would Liverpool have received the same number as Plymouth had we won the tie?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,671 ✭✭✭Talisman

I trust Slot to rotate the players where required, where as Klopp would run the midfield into the ground in the same situation. Players can get overloaded but Slot's team appear to be on top of managing the minutes and the training of the players.

Trying to not look beyond tomorrow tbh - Moyes has Everton in decent form(although their opponents haven’t been that good), the last derby at goodison too I expect will generate some atmosphere. 3 points there would be excellent.

After that, just keep an eye on how Arsenal are doing. I expect them to drop some points along the way, but not many. Not entirely unthinkable that the game at Anfield could be a cup final - don’t know how my nerves would hold up there!

It will be interesting to see if this trip to Dubai has the same effect as it did last year for Arsenal. Before they went to Dubai last January, after 22 games they were 5 points behind us and stuttering. The came back revived, scored for fun and won 14 of their remaining 16 games, only losing to Villa and drawing with City.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,070 ✭✭✭The Rooster

Yep. First tie drawn out in round 4 is ball number 1 for the round 5 draw and so on. So the winners of Plymouth/Liverpool would have been the same number ball in the draw no matter who won

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,878 ✭✭✭✭citytillidie

1st round the numbers are allocated alphabetically 2nd round your number is based then on the tie you were drawn. 3rd round the 1 to 44 is alphabetically for Premier League and Championship teams with the rest then assigned by the order of the tie from round 2, 4th round to Semi-finals the numbers for the draws are based on the order of the ties from the previous round

Trips to the middle east seem to precipitate good, injury free runs.......nithing shady there at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 201 ✭✭Toranaga

I think the ship has sailed with regards to shadiness on that front but warm weather I think is pretty much scientifically proven to help with joints and muscles, no?

Id almost have had that criticism on Alot before the dead rubber CL and FA Cup games came around.

Didn't feel like there was much rotation before then at all. I think Klopp rotated more on the whole, just that his system was more intensive in general
